Reading

What a wonderful world!

People love reading fiction because they can escape into different worlds. This is especially true for
childrens fiction and here three students tell us about the fictional worlds they loved when they were
children.
A
One of the first books I ever read by myself when I was young was The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. In the book some children enter a wonderful world called Narnia through
the back of a wardrobe. When the children first arrive in this amazing world, it is always winter.
Everywhere the children go there is snow and ice. It is ruled over by the White Witch whose magic
keeps it winter forever. The children go back to Narnia many times in different books but its the winter
Narnia that I always remember. I spent a lot of my childhood in that magical place! I also spent a lot of
time trying to find it myself. I got into lots of wardrobes but unfortunately never found a way into
Narnia. I did manage to lock myself in one once which terrified me so much that I stopped searching!
B
In my opinion the most incredible fantasy world ever created was the Looking Glass World that Alice
(in Alices Adventures in Wonderland) entered through a mirror. I loved it as a child and I still read it as
a teenager! I just love the idea of being able to step through a mirror into a world where everything is a
little crazy! The whole world is based on a chess game where Alice is a pawn (one of the soldiers in
chess). She meets different characters as she moves across the board to eventually become a Queen and
all the people in this world are totally nuts! Its marvellous but its very clever too and there are lots of
hidden references to the politicians and society of Lewis Carrolls time. This is my favourite book ever.
C
My mum had an old book that I read when I was about nine years old and its been made a film too. Its
called The Borrowers and it completely fascinated me. Its about some tiny little people who live under
the floors and in the walls of houses. They take things from our world to use like match boxes for
tables and the tin lids of perfume bottles for saucepans. I loved the idea that the things everyone is
always losing like pens, safety pins and so on, are actually borrowed by little people. For a child its
a wonderful world to imagine. Its not like some fantasy novels or films where a completely different
magical world has been created. The Borrowers world exists right alongside our own world. If only we
were small enough to enter it!

Which fictional world:

1 has characters that recycle things? ____
2 has content that is also appropriate for adults? ____
3 caused the reader to get into difficulties? ____
4 is based on a form of entertainment or pastime? ____
5 has unchanging weather conditions? ____
