Lesson Plan

Subject/Grade Level: 7th & 8th Grade Science

Lesson Title: Predicting Elements & Its Properties

Lesson Duration: 1hr 30min (2 days)

Performance Objective: After this lesson, students will be able to identify elements on the periodic table by its
property and its interaction of other elements.

Preparation

Framework Strand: Physical Science

Content Standard Competencies/Objectives:

7.2- Develop an understanding of chemical & physical changes, interactions involving energy & forces that affect
motion of objects.
2a-Identify patterns and common characteristics of elements found in the periodic table of elements. (DOK 2)
8.2- Apply concepts relating to an understanding of chemical & physical changes, interactions involving energy
& forces that affect motion of objects.
(2b) Predict the properties and interactions of given elements using the periodic table of elements. (DOK 2)
MS CCR/CCSS:
W.7.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships between
information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

W.8.6. Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the relationships
between information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

ISTE:
7.2a- 2a Students will use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including a
distance to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
8.2a -Students will use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including a
distance to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

4. www.createkahoot.com
Materials Needed: Computers, Internet, Paper & pencils

Equipment Needed: Teacher will need a computer connected to the Smartboard to demonstrate setting up a Prezi
free account and to demonstrate a mini-lesson using the site.

Desired Student Prerequisites: Students have learned the basics of the periodic table: names & symbols,
identifying atomic number & mass, characteristics of metals, nonmetals & metalloids, as well as how to identify
elements by groups and columns.

1
Introduction/Anticipatory Set
Students will participate in an engaging 5-7 min. activity that requires blind-folding. Students will observe the
texture of various elements by smelling and touching them to predict whether the element is a metal or nonmetal.
After they hypothesize, they will remove the mask, observe their element to determine if the hypothesis is
supported.

Lesson Outline/Procedures: Instructor Notes:
Teacher will have the Quizlet
Bell-ringer 1- 3-5 min.- Students will review element vocabulary with Quizlet. link for each student to follow
and complete the activity
from the smart board.

the smart-board, then identify them and their uses.
Write website on the board.
Day 1: The teacher explains the lesson.
Today you will work in pairs to learn more about elements. You will work Walk and monitor to make
sure every pair is on the

to visually see how each element looks, then read about its history and
the uses of it. You are expected to view ten elements of your choice, then Be sure to have students
write down 3 important facts from each of the 10 elements. check the computers out
before issuing.
The teacher passes out and goes over the rubric.

Students are paired and provided I-pads.

Closing: Exit Tickets- Students will write one new concept learned, and one
misconception.
Day 2: Have Prezi opened and ready
1. The teacher will complete a mini-lesson from the smart-board to to begin.
demonstrate using Prezi.
Computers should be fully
2. The teacher asks students to take out rubrics and remind them to

refer to it when creating Prezi. Students will also take out their
notes collected from yesterday on elements.
3. Pairs will work on creating Prezi presentations using the notes from
yesterday.
4. The teacher will walk, monitor & assist as needed.

Closing- Journal Reflection- students will reflect on the element project

and share their feelings about the way it was presented. Did you
learn more effectively? Can you think of another science topic
. you can do this type of activity with?

Application
Guided Practice:
The teacher will guide students by demonstrating min- lessons of the Prezi website, the Sterling Hill Mining
Museum website, and the Quizlet website.
Independent Practice:
The students will work independently by exploring & reading about element properties & interactions.
The students will work independently to create element Prezi presentation.

Summary
Lesson Closure: The students will participate in a review session on element properties & interactions using
Kahoot.

Evaluation

[Course Subject]: [Lesson Title] Plan

Global Academic Essentials Teacher Institute 2017: MSU
3
Informal Assessment/Review:
Oral questioning
Kahoot answers/participation
Checklist of students on/off task
Formal Assessment: Rubric- the teacher will grade based upon the criteria of the rubric.

Lesson Extension
Extension/Enrichment:
Each student is assigned one specific element. They will research the element, and learn about its background.
They will create a banner of the element to be used to make a class periodic table of elements.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
Allow additional time for completion.
Assist as needed: Pair/Share, 1-1 as needed
Visual Learners- Online periodic table & visual of elements
