THE WALL

PROLOGUE
MUSIC. A BOY and a GIRL ENTER and meet CENTER. They divide the
space in half with NEON TAPE. BLACK OUT

Grande Family: Grandpa Grande, Mom, Giselle, Esperanza


GoGo Family: Grandma GoGo, Dad, Sofia, Arturo

SCENE 1
Morning. BIRDS CHIRPING. GRANDPA GRANDE reads a NEWSPAPER. MOM
ENTERS, sweeping. GISELLE ENTERS, buttons her collar, pulls out
POWDER to check her face. ESPERANZA ENTERS dancing and singing
loudly, wearing BRIGHT HEADPHONES. She dances and sings loudly
as her family watches. She notices them.

ESPERANZA: Oops. Beunas Dias!

GRANDPA, MOM, GISELEE: ESPERANZA!

GRANDMA GOGO (from off R.): MIIIJJJJAAAA!!!!

The Grandes snap their heads towards R. TABLEAU.


ARTURO GOGO ENTERS with a COLORING BOOK and CRAYON. He sits and
colors. SOFIA ENTERS holding a BOOK.

SOFIA: Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou, Romeo!

GRANDMA GOGO (from off): MIJA!

SOFIA: Deny thy father and-

GRANDMA: MIJA! Have you seen my pills? I cant tell which


ones are for the morning!

SOFIA (SCREAMING): GRANDMA Im rehearsing for my PLAY! Deny


thy FATHER and REFUSE thy NAME

DAD ENTERS

SOFIA: FATHER! GOOD MORROW FATHER!

DAD: Uh, Buenos dias.

GRANDMA GOGO (carrying pill bottles): Ooo Mija! Is that ROMEO


& JULIET? That play is so sad! Which one says DAY TIME?

SOFIA: I know I love it! That one. Or if thou wilt not

DAD turns on a CHAIN SAW and starts cutting wood.

GRANDMA: Arturo, have you seen my glasses?

DAD: WHAT?

GRANDMA: MY GLASSES!!!

GoGos freeze in TABLEAU.

GRANDPA GRANDE (throws down paper): Those GoGos are MESSY! And
LOUD!

MOM: They are VERY loud.

GISELLE: They are like, WAY improper. Who lives like that?

GRANDPA GRANDE: They do! In their own trash!

MOM (to Esperanza): Like you! Stand up.

GISELLE: Eww, in chicken grease, with roaches and flies!

MOM: And ketchup stains!

GRANDPA: And chicken bones! (He BANGS on wall) Quiet down you
filthy PIGS!

ESPERANZA: MOM! Look, Ive been practicing! (She cartwheels and


falls.)

MOM/GRANDPA GRANDE: STAND UP STRAIGHT!

GRANDMA GOGO: Listen to that MONSTER! Always yelling!

SOFIA: I heard kids live there but no one has seen them!

DAD: Thats because the Grandes are a bunch of psychos!

GRANDMA GOGO: That man is so controlling! Who can live with


such a tyrant?

GRANDPA GRANDE: Daughter! You need to teach that girl some


manners!

MOM: Papa, Im trying but she wont follow the rules!

GRANDPA GRANDE: You have to be strict!

GRANDMA GOGO: Listen to him! Giving orders!

GRANDPA GRANDE: What was that, you filthy COW!?

DAD: I heard that, old man!

MOM: Papa, leave it. You cant reason with an ANIMAL!

As the families fight across wall, ARTURO and ESPERANZA sneak


towards wall and start tapping it, giggling. ESPERANZA starts
digging at WALL. GRANDPA GRANDE sees her.

GRANPA GRANDE: ESPERANZA WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! Cant you see that
this wall is the only thing separating US from THEM?

DAD (grabs Arturo): What are you doing? Get away from the
wall, Arturo.

ESPERANZA: But Grandpa-

DAD: You think you can just destroy The Wall without thinking of
your family and our protection? Go INSIDE!

MOM: No Esperanza! You were given an order. You are NEVER to


go near The Wall or talk to a GoGo, EVER. They are the ENEMY.
Do you understand?

Music. Transition.

SCENE 2
Sound of CRICKETS. Grandpa Grande ENTERS from L. He looks at
the wall and shakes his head. Grandma GoGo ENTERS from R. She
tip-toes to wall. Grandpa Grande starts patching wall with mud.
Grandma GoGo hears him and bends down towards hole. She slowly
reaches her hand through the wall. Grandpa Grande sees her hand
and cries out.

GRANDPA GRANDE: AHHH!

He slaps her hand.

GRANDMA GOGO: Why did you do that, you old donkey?

GRANDPA GRANDE: Why did you stick your hand through the hole,
tonta?

Grandma Go-Go: You are a mean old donkey! Go to bed.

GRANDPA GRANDE: Tonta!

They EXIT. ESPERANZA and ARTURO ENTER, cautiously. ARTURUO does


a secret TAPPING rhythm on WALL. ESPERANZA TAPS back.

ESPERANZA: Hello?

ARTURO: Hello? Are you ok?

ESPERANZA: I guess. Wheres your family?

ARTURO: Inside. Making quesadillas. Its quesadilla dia.

ESPERANZA: What?

ARTURO: Its Saturday. We make quesadillas on Saturdays. What


about you?

ESPERANZA: Theyre polishing the floors. We polish the floors


on Saturdays, for fun. Someone patched our hole!

ARTURO: But we almost got all the way through!

ESPERANZA: I know! Here, I can dig it out again!

ARTURO: I can help! Um, here

ESPERANZA: The dirt is coming out!

ARTURO: OK, keeping digging!

SOUND OF CRUMBLING AND A LOUD CRACK

ARTURO/ESPERANZA: WHOA!!!

ARTURO: Its you! You look really good.

ESPERANZA: You look, I mean, youre so clean!

ARTURO: Uh, thank you.

ESPERANZA: And you dont smell bad! At least not from here.
Hey, watch, Ive been working on something!

She does a cartwheel and crashes through the wall CRASH!

ARTURO: Are you ok?

ESPERANZA: Uh, yeah. Are you OK?

ARTURO: Yeah. I didnt just crash through a wall.

ESPERANZA: Oh, right. LOOK AT THE WALL, ARTURO!

ARTURO: Yep. Thats bad.

ESPERANZA: My family is going to MURDER me.

Grandma Gogo ENTERS, talking to a PLANT.

GRANDMA GOGO: Oh you sweet little angel, Ill put you right
here, next to my roses. AHHHH! Who are you? Arturo! What did
you do to the WALL?!

ARTURO: Grandma, its ok. I want you to meet someone.

GRANDMA GOGO: Are you Esperanza?

ESPERANZA: Si.

GRANDMA GOGO: What did you kids do!?

ARTURO: Grandma, we just-

GRANDMA GOGO: SHHHH! Be quiet! Come inside, Esperanza. Your


family is going to be very angry. Hurry!

MUSIC. TRANSITION.

SCENE 3
Morning. BIRDS CHIRPING. Grandpa Grande reads the NEWSPAPER.
MOM ENTERS, sweeping. She sees the hole.

MOM: DONDE ESTAS ESPERANZA! AY CHIJAUAHA MI HIJA!

GRANDPA: AY! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WALL?! PRESIDENT TRUMP BUILT


THIS WALL 346 YEARS AGO! ITS A HISTORICAL MONUMENT! ITS
RUINED!

GRANDPA & MOM (singing): REMEMBER ME FROM HISTORY! THAT TRUMP


BUILT A WALL

GISELLE: OMG WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WALL? Its like TOTALLY


broken.

MOM: GASP!!! Its the GOGOS! They kidnapped mi hija!

GRANDPA: THOSE FILTHY ANIMALS!!!

GISELLE: Well thats too bad, guess shes gone forever.

MOM: NO GISELLE! WE ARE GOING IN! Papa?

GRANDPA: RIGHT. PREPARE FOR WAR!

A MILITARY MARCH PLAYS. The Grandes put on FACE MASKS and march
into the GOGOs yard.

MOM: THEY MUST HAVE HER CHAINED IN THE ATTIC!

GISELLE: Shes probably in the freezer by now.

MOM: GASPS!!!

GRANDMA GOGO (FROM OFF): MIIIJJJJJAAA!!!

GRANDPA GRANDE: THE ENEMY IS APPROACHING!

GRANDES lie down flat.

GRANDMA GOGO: DID I LEAVE MY COFFEE MUG OUTSIDE AGAIN AHHH!!!

GRANDPA: HAND OVER MY ESPERANZA! WE KNOW YOU KIDNAPPED HER and


are holding her prisoner!

GRANDMA GOGO: You old DONKEY. Always blaming everybody!

Esperanza and Arturo ENTER.

ESPERANZA: Mom, Im right here.

GRANDPA/MOM: Esperanza!

Dad, Grandma GoGo and Sofia ENTER and wave to the GRANDES.

ESPERANZA: We all talked last night and Mom, Grandpa, its


time to tear down the wall.

GRANDES (overlapping): NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT! HECK NO!

ESPERANZA: Please! More space. We could have a pool and space


to play in!

ARTURO: And a vegetable garden to grow food!

SOFIA: We could have an out door theater space!

ALL: NO!

GISELLE: We could have dance parties!

SOFIA: With different DJs!

ALL: NO!

Silence.

GRANDPA GRANDE: We could have a soccer field.

ALL: YES!

GRANDPA GRANDE: QUIET DOWN! Now, on my command

GRANDMA GOGO: Oh be quiet! Kids! Starting tearing!

The GoGos and Grandes tear down the wall. FIESTA/PARTY MUSIC
PLAYS. Then the sound of CRACKING/CRUMBLING.

DAD: Wow.

MOM: Its gone.

A SOCCER BALL rolls on stage.

GRANDPA GRANDE: LETS PLAY BALL!

MUSIC. The families play soccer. The lights fade out.
