FIRE TRUCK LEVELING SYSTEM


When setting the stabilizers for aerial operation on slopes
that are within the defined parameters, +/- 0.2 degrees,
the system will automatically level the
apparatus. A manual inclinometer is
located on the panel which measures
in 2 degree increments.

INLET
Override (Aerial Device): The takeover of all aerial device movement control functions
by an operator at a second control station.
Quint: Fire apparatus with a permanently mounted fire pump, a water tank, a hose
storage area, an aerial ladder or elevating platform with a permanently mounted
waterway, and a complement of ground ladders.

Rated Capacity (Aerial Device): The total amount of weight of all personnel and
equipment that can be supported at the outermost rung of an aerial ladder or on the
platform of an elevating platform with the waterway uncharged.

ELECTRICAL RC MONITOR AERIAL TRUCK INSTALLATION


Platform and ladder electronics enclosures are pre-configured for one set of inputs to have a master override feature.
The operator
station connected to these inputs, typically at the base of the aerial, will override any other operator station.

6.2.1 OPERATOR STATIONS


6.2.1.1 MONITOR MOUNTED OPERATOR STATION
This operator station is factory installed on the monitor and is used by personnel at the monitor.
6.2.1.2 PANEL MOUNT OPERATOR STATION (Y4E-RP)
This operator station is installed on the truck, for example the pump operator's panel. It is used to operate the monitor
from a location on
the truck.
The electric MonsoonRCmonitor has five different styles of operator stations for use in various locations on the fire
truck or fire ground.
The design of the operator station communications allows users to override commands on other stations. The "last"
button pressed has
control. The overridden user can regain control by releasing their button and pressing again.

6.2 ELECTRICAL MODEL

Base Rail. The lower chord (rail) of an aerial ladder to which rungs and reinforcements are attached.
Base Section. The first or bottom section of an aerial device.

Bonding. The permanent joining of metallic parts to form an electrically conductive path that will ensure
electrical continuity and the capacity to conduct safely any current likely to be imposed.

Boom. An assembled section of an aerial device. The boom construction can be of the stressed skin box
beam type, the trussed lattice type, or the open U truss-type design.

Creeper Control. An optional set of aerial controls that are located at the ladder tip that allows the
operator located at the ladder tip to control all ladder functions at a reduced maximum speed.

Stabilizers
Standard Penetration Stabilizers: On initial slopes of 5 to 7, the above capacities
shall be reduced by 50%. On Initial slopes greater than 7, Operation is NOT
RECOMMENDED by the Mfg. In all cases, the turntable must be leveled to within 3.5
to retain the full rated capacities above.

Stabilizer Controls and Descriptions


- CONTROL PANELS LOCATED AT REAR OF APPARATUS ON EITHER SIDE
- STABILIZERS DEPLOYED INDEPENDENTLY
1. Diverter Valve Switch This electrical switch operates a diverter valve that
directs oil to either the stabilizer hydraulic system or the Aerial Ladder hydraulic
system.
Manual Override Diverter Valve This is a manual switch that performs the same
function as the Diverter Valve Switch, and is used if the electrical Diverter Valve
Interlock malfunctions. This manual switch is also used as an Emergency Override
During SHORT SET Procedures.

1. PTO Indicator Light Illuminates to show when the PTO is engaged.


2. Hi Idle Switch will increase the apparatus engine speed to a preset RPM.
3. Emergency Pump Switch (EPU) activates the electrical auxiliary hydraulic
back-up pump.
4. Stabilizer Deployed Indicator Lights green in color and will illuminate
individually as each stabilizer is deemed by the system to be deployed
satisfactorily for aerial operation.
5. Leveling Bubble (s) - provided to aid the Engineer in setting up the apparatus
as level as possible.
6. Hydraulic Function Levers located on rear outside edges of the apparatus.
Have black handles and each lever is labeled front or rear, in & out , up &
down for extending type stabilizers.
7. Stabilizer Deployment (Short Set Conditions)
8. Done if set up space is limited for stabilizer deployment (less than 13 ' 16' or
18' depending on model).
9. Must place apparatus so that the stabilizers on the side the aerial will be
deployed on may be fully extended.
10. Stabilizers on the short set side are deployed as far horizontally as possible, and
vertically down until each is weight supporting.
- AERIAL RETAINS FULL OPERATIONAL RATINGS ON FULLY EXTENDED
SIDE.
STABILIZING ON A SLOPE:
- OPERATE STABILIZERS SIMULTANEOUSLY ON THE UPHILL SIDE FIRST
UNTIL THEY ARE TOUCHING THE GROUND
- ONCE THE UPHILL STABILIZERS ARE IN PLACE, SIMULTANEOUSLY
OPERATE THE STABILIZERS ON THE DOWNHILL SIDE UNTIL LEVEL.
Aerial Turntable, Pump Panel, or Rear Control Station
Controls and Descriptions
- TURNTABLE CONTROL STATION IS THE MAIN CONTROL STATION
o CAN OVERRIDE ANY OTHER CONTROL STATION AT ANYTIME
o MUST BE MANNED AT ALL TIMES IF AERIAL IS IN USE IN CASE OF NEED
TO OVERRIDE
- SECONDARY CONTROL STATIONS HAVE RAMP FEATURE (aerial moves
for approx.. 2 seconds after switch is no longer pressed)
- MOVE AERIAL SLOWER THAN MAIN CONTROL STATION
o KEEPS THE AERIAL MOVING FOR A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME IF
THE SWITCHES ARE DISENGAGED ABRUPTLY TO AVOID TIP LASH
o DELAYS AERIAL MOVEMENT FOR A SHORT PEROID OF TIME IF
SWITCHES ARE ENGAGED ABRUPTLY
1. Panel Light Switch Illuminates the light on the control panel for added
visibility.
2. Bed Zone Indicator Light illuminates as the aerial rotates over the ladder bed.
When illuminated, may lower the aerial into the ladder bed.
3. Tracking Lights Switch- Operates both spotlights on the base end of the base
section.
4. Tip Light Switch Operates both spotlights on the tip of the fly section.
5. System Lock Control A red push / pull style button that locks all hydraulic
Aerial functions in or out. When the button is pulled up, it is in the ON position
and the button will illuminate.
6. Right / Left Aerial Function Control Controls infinite right and left rotation of
the turntable.
7. Extend / Retract Aerial Function Control Controls extension and retraction of
the Aerial Ladder sections.
8. Raise / Lower Aerial Function Control Controls Ladder elevation cylinders.
9. Rung Alignment Indicator Light Illuminates when the aerial section rungs are
in alignment for climbing the Aerial Ladder.
10. System Pressure Gauge Shows operation pressure of the Ladder hydraulic
system.
11. Loadminder Display Shows percent of Ladder rated load and forces acting on
the Aerial Ladder sections through an LED bar graph display 0-100%.
12. Overload / Red Line Condition Audible Alarm (not visible) audible alarm
sounded when the Loadminder Display indicates an Overload / Redline
Condition.
13. Emergency Pump Switch (EPU) A momentary switch that activates the back-
up emergency hydraulic pump.
14. Emergency Pump Indicator Light Illuminates when the EPU switch is
engaged and the emergency pump is operating.
15. Flow Minder If so equipped, this will consist of an electronic LED display
indicating GPM water flow through the aerial waterway.
16. Remote Control Master(s) tip controls unit this momentary switch when
activated, will allow operator at the tip controls; to perform aerial and/or monitor
control function.
17. Retract Override will allow retraction of the ladder when the fly steps are in
overlap with the next lower section. SAFETY FEATURE- LADDER WILL
AUTOMATICALLY STOP RETRACTING WHEN FLY SECTION IS ALMOST
OVERLAPPING THE SECTION BELOW IT. THIS IS TO ENSURE THE
OPERATOR MAKES SURE NO ONE IS ON THE LADDER WHILE
RETRACTING. MUST HIT THIS SWITCH TO CONTINUE RETRACTING AT
THAT POINT.
18. Red Rotation Lock Override Pull Knobs (provided only at the turntable)
located inside the front of the control stand and should only be used in cases of
extreme emergency. Allow the aerial to rotate on the side of the apparatus where
the stabilizers have not been deployed in accordance with manufacturers
recommendations.
19. Stabilizer Deployment Indicator Light (when provided) illuminates to warn if
one or more of the stabilizers are in the Short Set configuration. An audible
warning will sound when this light is on.
20. Communication System consist of a communication speaker with a push to
talk button
21. Monitor & Nozzle Control (up / down) raises and lowers the Aerial Ladder
monitor at the tip.
22. Monitor & Nozzle Control (right / left) moves the Aerial Ladder monitor right
or left at the tip.
23. Monitor & Nozzle Control (Fog / Stream) allows Selection of the pattern of
water stream from the nozzle.

Aerial Ladder Placement


- MUST RECHECK POSITION OF AERIAL AFTER WATER IS PUT INTO USE
THROUGH THE WATERWAY.
- NOZZLE REACTION WILL CAUSE A DIFFERENCE IN THE ENGLE OF THE
LADDER
- ANYONE ON THE LADDER MUST HAVE A LADDER BELT ON
- MUST DRAIN WATERWAY WHILE LADDER IS STILL ELEVATED
o MINIMUM DRAINING AGLE OF 30*
- IF RETRACTING LADDER WHILE WATERWAY STILL UNDER PRESSURE,
MUST ENSURE PRESSURE RELEIF SYSTEM IS BETWEEN 210-250 PSI

Bedding the Aerial Ladder


- ROTATE AERIAL UNTIL BED ZONE INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATES.
- AERIAL WILL NOT LOWER PAST A PREDETERMINED POINT UNLESS THE LIGHT IS ON.
- ONCE BEDDED, MOVE THE SYSEM LOCK VALVE INTO THE LOCKED POSITION

Intercom System:
- PUSH TO TALK IN ALL LOCATIONS EXCEPT AT THE LADDER TIP
INTERCOM STATION

Overload Strobe Lights:


-LOCATED AT THE TIP OF THE BASE SECTION OF THE AERIAL ON EITHER SIDE
STROBE WHEN AERIAL IS OVERLOADED

- LADDER INCLINOMETER ON SIDE OF AERIAL SHOWS THE INCLINE

Dual Position (Retractable) Waterway - Electric:
- FIREFIGHTING POSITION PLACES THE TIP OF THE WATERWAY AT THE TIP OF THE FLY
SECTION
- RESCUE POSITION PLACES THE TIP AT THE TIP OF THE NEXT LOWER SECTION
- AERIAL MUST BE COMPLETELY RETRACTED AND BEDDED BEFORE SWITCHING FROM ONE
POSTION TO THE OTHER.
- WATERWAY MUST ALSO BE UNCHARGED (DRY) BEFORE SWITCHING POSITION.

Fly Section Creeper Controls:


- INSTALLED AT TIP OF FLY SECTION
- ALLOW PERSON AT TIP OF FLY SECTION TO PERFORM ALL AERIAL
LADDER CONTROL FUNCTIONS
- OPERATE AT A PERCENTAGE OF THE TOTAL SPEED OF LADDER
CONTROLS AT MAIN CONTROL STATION (CREEPING EFFECT)
- NOT TO BE USED DURING INITIAL PLACEMENT
- WILL NOT OPERATE UNLESS THERE IS A PERSON AT THE MAIN
