Introduction

The purpose of this report is to get marks for internal assessment. My topic is English for
specific purposes (ESP).I will discuss the specific fields and purposes in this report.

What is ESP?

ESP (English for Specific Purposes) is one important branch of the EFL/ESL (English as a
Foreign/Second Language) system that functions as the main branch of English language
teaching ELT. Therefore, ESP is not a particular kind of language or methodology, but rather an
approach to language learning whereby the content and method are based on the learners
particular needs to learn the language (To distinguish ESP from EGP (English for General
Purposes) we could say that ESP is more focused .

A Needs analysis

In designing an ESP course it is imperative to carry out a needs analysis to determine

the specific reasons for learning the language or to specify exactly, what students need to achieve
through the medium of English. According to Nunans techniques and procedures for collecting
information to be used in syllabus design are referred to as a needs analysis. In more formal
terms a needs analysis is the process of determining the needs for which a learner or group of
learners requires a language and arranging the needs according to priorities.

The target needs

Before designing a course, students should know why they are taking the course and how
they will apply that learning. Also English language teachers should know what kind of tasks and
activities learners will be using English.

ESP concerned with?

use of English in a restricted set of social and thematic areas

chiefly for the unambiguous transfer of (technical) information
the preferred language of international communication
for the needs of non-native users of English
a restriction of General English (GenE)

How does ESP fit into the area of AL?

English for Specific Purposes is an excellent example of Applied Linguistics, drawing on all
the major fields of Theoretical Linguistics.

Research, which is almost exclusively corpus oriented, looks at syntax, morphology,

lexicology, text linguistics, genre studies, and even language learning.
Of least importance to the field of ESP is pronunciation because ESP has been investigated
most thoroughly in the written medium.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) encompasses a range of English Language applications for
specialized areas and sectors such as

English for Banking & Finance

Legal English
English for the Oil & Gas Industry
Technical English
English for Tourism
English for Call Centers
Medical English
English for Aviation
English for the Construction Industry
English for Accounting
English for Management
English for HR Professionals

English for Special Purposes has become English for Specific Purposes
special implies restricted languages
specific focuses attention on the purposes of a task in English.
a selection of skills (reading, listening, writing, talking)
a selection of text types
a selection of the vocabulary and grammar

Nominal Style
makes an ESP text hard for an "outsider" to read and understand
means a higher proportion of nouns (also prepositions and adjectives) - Sager et al. found that
this was 44 percent of all words in EST vs. 28 percent in Genenral texts
a higher degree of nominalization, where clauses are replaced by nominal phrases
the tendency to combine a function verb and a noun instead of a simple verb, e. g. to make an
investigation than to investigate, to give a report than to report.
Frequencies of Compound Nouns
General English 0.87%

Medical English 9.76%

Technical English 15.37%

Conclusion

In this report I discussed the ESP and its features. It is very important for an English learner or a
literature student to learn more about specific purposes.
