Preface The 365B L which was introduced in 1999 had a good reputation
with customers and operators as a replacement model for the
245B and 245D. The 365B L has been changed to improve its
performance and productivity. The improved 365B L is called
365B L Series II.
www.CAT.com
Improvement of the 365B L The 365B L Series II includes the following improvements:
1) Increased engine horsepower by 5 percent
More power contributes to faster cycle time and more
productivity.
2) Increased lifting capacity
The lifting force is increased through larger boom cylinders
and changed boom and stick geometry. The hydraulic lifting
capacity is increased up to 16 percent over the previous 365B L.
3) New stick for reach boom (available third quarter 2002)
The R4.15 (13'7") stick is newly developed for the reach
boom. This stick is designed for use in trenching and general
excavation applications.
4) More durable bucket linkage
Bucket pins have increased diameter for 365B L Series II.
Pin retention method also changes from cross bolt type to flag
type. This improvement applies to both V-family and W-family
bucket linkages. The bucket families for the 365B L Series II
are called VB family and WB family.
Engine Horsepower The 3196 ATAAC engine used in the current 365B L is also used
for the 365B L Series II. The engine horsepower is increased by
5 percent from 287 kW/385 HP/390 PS to 302 kW/404 HP/410 PS.
The power increase is achieved with software changes in the
ADEM II (Advanced Diesel Engine Management) controller
and does not require any component changes.

The 365B L Series II uses larger boom cylinders and modified Improvement of
geometry for stick cylinder attachment locations for reach
configurations to increase lifting force. As a result, the
Lifting Capacity
hydraulic lifting capacity improves up to 18 percent compared
to the former model. Lift capacities limited by stability do
not change significantly.
3
2) These boom and stick geometry changes do not affect the
working ranges. However, the working ranges are affected
slightly by other stick changes that were necessary to prevent
bucket-to-stick interference as a result of the larger bucket
pins. Please refer to the Working Range table for detail
information on working range change.
3) Lifting performance
The chart on the next page compares lifting capacity. The chart
shows data for the reach boom, R3.6 (11'10") stick, 900 mm
(36") shoes and Heavy Lift ON for NACD version of the
365B L Series II and 365B L. Lifting capacity varies by front
linkage configuration and by source plant due to different
operation weight and bucket weights. Please refer to the
specalogs for your territory.

Lifting capacity comparison (NACD version)
With 900 mm (36") Shoes, Reach Boom, R3.6 (11'10") Stick and Heavy Lift On
The R4.15 stick is 4.15 m (13'7") long. This stick is designed for Newly Designed R4.15 Stick
trenching and general excavation applications.
(available third quarter 2002)
1) Working performance
The working range dimensions and digging forces are
intermediate between the R4.67 (15'4") stick and the R3.6
(11'10") stick. Please refer to the Working Ranges table for
more detail specifications.
5
Durable Bucket Pins 1) Larger diameter bucket pins
The bucket pins are increased in diameter compared to the
365B L. The diameters of the bucket pins are shown in the
chart below. The stick nose boss, and pin brackets on the
bucket are also increased in size.
2) Retention method
Previously, bucket pins were retained by a cross bolt with
double nuts. The 365B L Series II uses a flag type retention
method for the following pins for more secure retention.
2) Bucket to Power Link Pin
2) Bucket to Stick Pin
2) Bucket Cylinder to Power Link Pin
2) Stick to Idler Link Pin
6
1) Shipping dimensions Shipping Dimensions
The redesigned stick cylinder geometry affects the shipping
dimension for boom top height slightly for reach boom
and Operating Weight
configurations.
7
3) Operating weight for R4.15 stick
The weight of the R4.15 stick is 190 kg (410 lb) heavier than
the R3.6 stick. Estimates of total machine operating weight
with this stick need to take bucket weight into consideration,
also. For optimum performance, the R4.15 stick should be
equipped with a slightly smaller (lighter) bucket than can be
applied on the R3.6 stick.
2) Boom-to-machine interchangeability
As a result of the boom and boom cylinder redesign for the
365B L Series II, the booms and the boom cylinders are not
interchangeable between the 365B L and the 365B L Series II.
Booms for 365B cannot be mounted on a 365B L Series II and
booms for a 365B L Series II cannot be mounted on a 365B L.
8
4) Reach Stick-to-boom interchangeability
As a result of the relocated stick cylinder on the reach boom,
there is limited interchangeability of reach booms and sticks
between the 365B L and 365B L Series II as shown in the
table below.
