OBE SYLLABUS IN ENGLISH 102 : Developmental Reading


A. VISION: CNSC as a premier higher education institution in the Bicol Region.

B. MISSION: The Camarines Norte State College shall provide higher and advanced studies in the fields of education, arts and
sciences, economics, health, engineering, management, finance, accounting, business and public administration,
fisheries, agriculture, natural resources development and management and ladderized courses. It shall also respond to
research, extension and production services adherent to progressive leadership towards sustainable development.

F. COURSE TITLE: Developmental Reading

G. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course deals with the theories on the nature of the reading process and its correlates e.g. reading in content
areas, case study reading, literature based readings and the like.

H. CREDIT UNITS: 3 units

K. SCHEDULE: TTh 1:00-2:30 /1st Semester, SY 2017- 2018

M. INSTITIUTIONAL INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES: CNSC envisions a graduate having the following attributes: professional
competence, critical and creative thinking skills, technical competitive skills, productivity, social and ethical responsibility,
communication skills, interpersonal skills and lifelong learning.

N. PROGRAM INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES: For AB English Language, the following set of objectives describes what graduates are
expected to attain within few years after graduation:

1. Demonstrate professional and fundamental knowledge on language and literature and able to perform work activities
effectively to the standard of fast-paced dynamic environment.

2. Analyze and solve problems by using intelligent judgment based on evidence, sound reasoning, and generally
accepted facts and principles, and being able to improvise and use the creative skills in case of unprecedented problems
which are relevant in language and literature.

3. Demonstrate confidence in communication, both in written and spoken language.

1. evaluate the reading process, habits, strategies and theories in understanding the cognitive and linguistic factors in
reading;

Grading System

As mandated by the Board of Trustees, the Camarines Norte State College must use a cumulative grading system.
The following table and figure show the breakdown of grades:

Class standing = makes up 50% of the grade per grading period. It includes: Recitation, Assignment, Quizzes and Attendance
FG = refers to the sum of the Class Standing, Periodical Exam and Project during the last grading period; it stands for Final
Grade
TG = refers to the sum of the Class Standing, Periodical Exam and Project of the current grading period; it stands for Tentative
Grade
Attendance

As stipulated in the Student Handbook, students are allowed only 20% of the total number of meetings. Thus, only a maximum
of 10 absences for MWF classes and 7 for TTH classes. Any more than that will be cause for the student to be dropped from this
subject.

Excused Absences
The following are acceptable reasons for excused absences:
1. serious illness;
2. illness or death of family member;
3. college-related trips or events; and
4. major religious holidays

The instructor must be informed preferably in advance regarding these types of absences, but not later than one week after.

Make up Opportunity
For students who are excused due to college-related trips or events, the highest grade for non-major exams will be given.
However, for major exams, the student must take it no later than one week from the end of his or her official travel.
For excused students due to the other stipulated reasons, make-up quizzes will be given no later than a week after.
For missed project and assignment deadlines, the excused student will be given ample time for preparation and a different
submission date.

Verification of Absences
Students who claim to be absent because of serious illness or death of family member will be asked to provide appropriate
verification with a stamped date inclusive of the date of absence such as a Medical or Death Certificate.

Submission of Assignments and Projects


Rubrics for grading projects and assignments will be provided for by the instructor.
Deadlines are absolute. It cannot be changed unless otherwise stated by the instructor.
Printed write-up format is always as follows:
On an 8.5 inches by 11 inches (short) bond paper
1.5 inch left margin; all other sides are 1 inch
Font: Times New Roman 12; double-spaced
Header that includes the name, course & block, subject, the name and logo of the school, and the semester and

Academic Integrity, Cheating and Plagiarism

The College and its instructors does not tolerate any form of cheating and plagiarism. As stipulated in the Student Handbook and
discussed during the Student Orientation, any student caught cheating during an exam will automatically merit a grade of 5.0 or Failed.
Plagiarized papers will also merit a grade of 5.0 for the subject.
For other offenses and its penalties, please see the Student Handbook.

Classroom Behavior, Decorum and Civility


Students are expected to behave accordingly. So attack of personal nature or statements denigrating another on the basis of
sex, religion, sexual orientation, age or other such factors will merit a low grade in terms of Attitude and may be asked to leave the room
or worse, be subjected to disciplinary action.
The prescribed uniform must be worn during class except on Wash Day. However, students must still follow the dress code.
This means, that students must not wear their PE or NSTP uniforms and/or any attire prohibited as stipulated in the College Policies
during this class. Non-compliance to this rule will result in reprimand or suspension.

Group Work and Student Collaboration


Group works will be rated not only by the final outcome but also through an assessment procedure or evaluation of members by
other members in the group.
