5 Chemical Engineering Code of Ethics
Section 3. The chemical engineer shall avoid being associated with any enterprise which is of
questionable character or is contrary to law or public welfare.

A lawful Chemical Engineer shall abide by the rules and regulations set by the government and is obliged
to practice his profession wherein he will not bring harm to anyone.

A typical example of a violation of this code which is common in the Philippines are those Chemical
Engineers who operates and works at a laboratory of Illegal drugs. A clear violation of the Section 3 of
the Chemical Engineering Code of Ethics as it is contrary to law.

Section 4. The chemical engineer shall express a professional opinion only when he is adequately
informed of the facts related thereto and the purposes for which the opinion is asked.

A lawful Chemical Engineer shall only express his opinion on a certain matter if he has enough
knowledge about it and have studied it thoroughly as it may lead to problems if a wrong opinion was
stated especially on sensitive issues.

A common violation of this section is when a chemical engineer releases a statement concerning a
sensitive issue even though he is not completely aware of it.

Section 7. The chemical engineer shall be mindful of the safety and convenience of the public at all times
and shall make every effort to remedy or bring to the attention of his client or employer any
dangerous defect in equipment or structures or dangerous conditions of operation which come to his
knowledge.

This section of the Chemical Engineering Code of Ethics would like to inform all the Filipino Chemical
Engineers that it is their responsibility to promote the safety and convenience of the ones who are near
and affected by the company operations.

The most common incident where this code is violated is when a company disposes its harmful waste
without even treating it resulting to the contamination of water that affects the health of the people
within the community and hence contribute to pollution which is really happening here in our country.
Section 10. The chemical engineer shall not accept compensation, financial or otherwise form more than
one client or employer who is in the same line of business or has conflicting interest with the others,
without the consent of all parties; he shall not accept compensation directly or indirectly from parties
dealing with his client or employer except with the consent of his client or employer.

In laymans term, a Chemical Engineer should not commit breached of contract and is not allowed to
commit to something that will result to a conflict of interest.

This is actually real and is happening in the workplace. There are Chemical Engineers who deals with a
number of clients of the same line of business and is a conflict of interest for both parties just for his
benefit.

Section 16. The chemical engineer shall recognize the view that inadequate compensation for
professional services ten toward inferior and unreliable work and shall not accept compensation beneath
the generally accepted level of professional fee.

Duly licensed Chemical Engineers have the right to be compensated of a salary within an acceptable
level for his job or work done.

There are lots of Chemical Engineers in the Philippines who are compensated unjustly and is below the
generally accepted compensation for chemical engineers. Most of this chemical engineers are employed
in small companies who are just starting their business.
