Lets Explore!

Marco visits Vanessa in Cambridge. He hasn't been there in ages*.

* Ages means a very long time.

Instructions: Read the text aloud.

Marco: It's great to see you, Vanessa.

Vanessa: It's great to see you, too! I've anxiously awaited your visit ... Have you been
to Massachusetts before?
Marco: I used to come visit here when I was a kid. We would come and visit my
Uncle Doug - he lived here for ages. I remember he used to collect
snowglobes. He would show us his collection whenever we visited.
Vanessa: Really? I had no idea you had family in the U.S.
Marco: I usually keep a little mystery in my relationships - to keep things
interesting. My mother would always tell me to not reveal too much at the
start of a relationship.
Vanessa: That's ... strange.
Marco: Strange? I thought you liked a little mystery in a man.
Vanessa: There's mystery, and then there's withholding information!
Marco: Wow - you are clearly overly sensitive about this, V.
Vanessa: Me? I gladly share personal details with people that I'm supposedly in love
with! Look here in my study - I have a collection of snowglobes, too! What
do you think of that?
Marco: It's my way or the highway, honey.

Learning Points

Used to and Would to Talk About Past Habits

When you talk about repetitive events in the past, you can use used to or would. We
usually use these expressions when we talk about memories from our childhood or earlier
days.

Example:
I used to come visit here when I was a kid.
We would come and visit my Uncle Doug - he lived here for ages.

You use used to with you refer to conditions, states or actions that do not happen anymore.

Examples:
I used to have many friends at school.
My parents used to be strict with me.
We used to like the same type of music.

You use would for actions that were repetitive in the past. However, you do not use ot to
talk about past state.

Example:
He would study for hours in the garden.
My mother would always tell me to not reveal too much at the start of a relationship.

Use the infinitive verb with these expressions:

Used to + verb (I used to live here).
Would + verb (We would talk for hours)
