current during fault conditions, since the operating current is
proportional to the terminal voltage which is
reduced due to the fault. Operation of the relay is blocked when
the current is less than 0.02In.

A built-in timer with adjustable settings is provided so that the

relay operates only for faults which are not cleared
by other protection.

When the relay is used for back-up protection of a generator

connected to the power system via a delta/star
step-up transformer, it should measure similar levels of
impedance for an uncleared three phase or phase to
phase fault on the HV bus.

It is recommended that the relay is connected to measure phase

to neutral VT secondary voltage so that
the level of impedance seen for HV three phase and phase to phase
faults will be the same (see Figures 3 and
4). Where a three phase VT with a secondary neutral connection is
available it is advisable that the relay
voltage circuit neutral point is not connected to the VT secondary
neutral point in order to prevent relay

operation for an LV earth fault. (Other protection exists for this

fault condition).

When a generator is directly connected to a power system, the

back-up under-impedance relay should measure phase to phase VT
secondary voltage so that it will see similar levels of impedance
for generator terminal three phase or phase to phase faults. With
the phase
to phase connection (see Figure 5) the impedance seen for a
three phase fault will be 3 times the impedance
seen with a phase to neutral connection.

The relay should generally be set to operate at 70% of the rated

load impedance, taking into account shorttime
overloads, voltage variation etc. With this setting the relay will
provide adequate back-up protection for the
generator, generator transformer and associated high voltage
busbars.

In addition to the time-delayed outputs separate instantaneous

output contacts are provided. The instantaneous output contacts
can be used to energise an external time delay relay for
applications requiring two time delayed steps.
