Problem 1
The basic barometer can be used as an altitude- measuring device in airplanes. The ground
control reports a barometric reading of 753 mm Hg while the pilots reading is 690 mm Hg. Estimate
the altitude of the plane from ground level if the average air and mercury densities are 1.20 kg/m3 and
13,600 kg/m3, respectively.
Given:
Mercury Barometer
hHg |ground = 753 mm
hHg |plane = 690 mm
Hg = 13,600 kg/m3
air = 1.20 kg/m3
Reqd: hplane

Problem 4
A 3.27-m3 tank contains 100 kg of nitrogen at 175 K. Determine the pressure in the tank, using (a)
the ideal-gas equation, (b) the van der Waals equation, and (c) the Beattie-Bridgeman equation.
Compare your results with the actual value of 1505 kPa.
Given: Reqd:
Substance = Nitrogen Pressure using:
V = 3.27 m3 a) the ideal-gas equation,
m = 100 kg b) the van der Waals equation, and
T = 175 K c) the Beattie-Bridgeman equation
