edition of BS S 500.

2 Process of manufacture
The material shall be manufactured by an electric process unless otherwise agreed between the
manufacturer and the purchaser in accordance with the latest edition of BS S 500.

3 Chemical composition
The steel shall contain:

Element %

6 Mechanical properties
The mechanical properties obtained from test pieces selected and prepared in accordance with the relevant
requirements of the latest edition of BS S 500 shall comply with the following.
1) Tensile test.
2) Single bend test. The test piece shall be bent cold without cracking through an angle of 180 over a
former with a radius equal to one and a half times the nominal thickness of the sheet or strip.

7 Intercrystalline corrosion test

7.1 A bend test piece shall be selected by the inspector to represent each cast. The test piece shall be heated
for 30 minutes at a temperature of 650 10 C and cooled in air. It shall then be immersed for 72 hours in
a boiling solution having the following composition:
111 grammes copper sulphate crystals (CuSO45H2O);
98 grammes concentrated sulphuric acid (specific gravity 1.84) made up to 1 litre with distilled water.
Precaution shall be taken during boiling to prevent concentration due to evaporation.
7.2 The test piece treated in accordance with 7.1 shall then be subjected to, and meet the requirements of,
the single bend test in accordance with Clause 6, 2).
7.3 Re-tests
7.3.1 If any test piece fails to meet the requirements of 7.2 the inspector shall select two further test pieces
from the batch, one of which shall be taken from the item originally sampled, unless that item has been
