OVERVIEW
This document is intended to be a guide that will provide a template for the dealer to profitably
pursue the Mobile Hose Service Business. Topics include market opportunity, financial analysis,
vehicle / tooling specifications, initial parts inventory recommendations, and administration
requirements. This service provides an opportunity for growth that extends beyond the dealer store
operations. This alternative should only be considered by dealers currently operating successful
Hose and Coupling Dealer Store Operations. Deviation from the contents of this management guide
may be necessary to tailor a mobile hose van service to a dealers specific demographic and
economic circumstances.

MARKET OPPORTUNITY
Convenience has always been the most important buying criteria for customers purchasing hose and
couplings. The mobile hose service is a convenience that provides a product and service at the
point of need. This convenience concept is being embraced by a growing number of competitors,
who currently operate a mobile hose service and more are entering the mobile hose van market both
in North America and worldwide on a continuous basis. (See Appendix I for additional competitive
information). To compete for the customer's hose business in the future, many dealers will need to
operate mobile hose service vehicles in their territory as a supplement to their existing traditional
parts counter business. The mobile hose van business is a long-term commitment and should not be
utilized for short-term project support i.e. a specific construction or mining project1. The health and
success of this program will be dependant on the continuous commitment of both dealer
management and the program team to the business.
Caterpillar dealers traditionally had the advantage of selling hose and couplings to customers as part
of a parts or service transaction. However, most customers will not travel out of their way to buy
hose and couplings from the Caterpillar dealer when a more convenient option is available.
Competitors like Pirtek, Parker (Parker Enzed), and Aeroquip have far more outlets than Caterpillar
dealers. Most competitors also offer a wide variety of products to different market segments.
In North America, there are several competitors that have the majority of active hose vans. This
includes company-owned vans, franchise van programs, and independent distributor programs. Each
one of these business models has a distinct set of guidelines unique to its operation. One common
denominator for success across all business models is product selection. Competitors are continually
adding to their respective product lines to meet the needs of the markets they serve. By diversifying
product lines, the financial side of the business can be controlled more effectively.
The competitions strategy is to provide fast, emergency hose service using large numbers of mobile
hose vehicles to blanket a market. By assigning designated customers to each hose vehicle, the
competition aims to build customer loyalty and to capture the non-emergency business through their
outlets.
Aeroquip, Pirtek, Masthead, Hose Doctors (Parker), and Hose Pros are the most widely recognized
and aggressive competitors in North America. Pirtek has the largest market share in North America
with 40% and Parker controls about 20% of the market . The majority of the remaining market is
made up of local distributors. All of the major competitors consider mobile service to be an integral
part of their overall marketing strategy and many are planning significant growth in the next few
years.
Without mobile hose service, significant growth in the hose and coupling aftermarket is unlikely and
some current sales are at risk. There is additional opportunity for the Caterpillar dealer in
metropolitan areas with little or no competition.
A successful mobile hose service business requires enough opportunity within a limited radius to
minimize travel time and maximize revenue. Most dealers will look first at the Caterpillar machine
population in a given area to determine the potential opportunity. However, the population of other
1
C container set up is recommended for projects such as these.
earthmoving and industrial equipment should not be ignored. Dealers can expect to need multiple
vehicles to cover the opportunity in most urban and other high machine density areas. In order to
have a successful program, the dealer must ultimately broaden their service coverage to competitive
machines and other market segments such as manufacturing, marine, and material handling.
Some Caterpillar dealers have already entered the mobile hose service business in Australia, Europe,
and North America. (See Appendix V for listing of Caterpillar dealers with mobile hose service
vehicles)
MARKETING PLAN
A marketing plan for a mobile hose van program should be created to assist the dealer in formulating
marketing strategies and to provide a means of measuring performance. An optimal plan would
leverage the total dealer capability including all other parts and services currently offered by the
dealer. Another important aspect of a marketing plan is identifying and characterizing competitors
in the dealers service area. In addition, a projected sales volume should be prepared to detail
performance in designated financial reporting periods. The mobile hose van program should be
considered part of the overall hydraulic marketing program and it should include strategy for POPS-
C, POPS-M, and POPS-I product. For additional marketing plan suggestions and explanations on
POPS-C, POPS-M and POPS-I, see Appendix II.
Marketing Plan Critical Success Factors: Targeting the right customer, generating new business
leads, maintaining the correct amount and mix of products on the van, defining a territory, and an
effective communication network within the dealership.
Marketing Plan Threats: Market saturation, customer resistance to price premiums, inadequate
employee training, market/economic conditions, and lack of support from dealer/Caterpillar
management.
FINANCIAL PLAN
The estimated initial investment associated with operating a mobile hose service business is as
follows:
Based on the capital costs and inventory investment shown above, the financial analysis model
(Appendix III) shows a mobile hose vehicle yields a payback period of 3-4 years.
A financial plan should be designed to report all aspects of mobile hose van activity including
projected sales, direct and indirect costs, investments, and ROI. It should be written in such a way
that the dealer is able to breakout specific areas such as sales, profit, and after hours call out for
further financial examination. It is recommended and necessary that mobile hose van financial
statements are kept separate from other hydraulics business in order to accurately assess profitability.
2
Costs will vary depending on the type/size of vehicle chosen, tooling selection, and geographical location.
3
Initial investment figures are per van. Number of vans required is dependant on opportunity.
PRODUCT PLAN
A product plan should be established and should have the ability to expand the POPS-M and POPS-I
product line to meet the dealers territorial requirements. The products carried on the van should be
continually rationalized based on the needs of target markets and changing market requirements.
The plan should also contain a plan that continuously analyzes competitive product offerings and
marketing strategies.
A formal product development program should also be included in the overall product plan. This
program, coordinated between the dealer and the Caterpillar product development team, will allow
the dealer to identify product line gaps. This strategy can be employed either to match competitive
product offerings or to introduce innovative products to the current market. Please see Appendix IV
for a POPS-M request form. The following information should be considered before the
introduction of a new product:
Inventory
The mobile hose van and support inventory should always be based on the markets served. The
initial vans will most likely focus on supporting Caterpillar equipment. As a dealer expands in the
business and adds vans, industry or market specific vans may be considered. This strategy allows
vans to specialize their inventory rather than being all things to all markets.
The support and van inventory need to be monitored closely in order to optimize inventory
requirement changes. The balance between adequate inventory and maximum product turns is
always difficult to maintain. This is one of the key factors in the successful financial performance of
any mobile hose van program. Vehicle capacity and weight restrictions are both critical inventory-
limiting factors that also need to be considered.
Because machine populations and industry segments vary widely between dealer territories,
Caterpillar does not recommend a standard initial van inventory. Dealers have two options (or a
combination of both) when determining initial inventory:
1. Run a query on DBS to analyze which hose and coupling products had the highest usage in
the past year and build an inventory from the list.
2. Utilize the Hydraulic Information System (HIS) to determine appropriate inventory levels for
Caterpillar equipment in a specific territory. Note: PTOS data must be kept up to date in
order for this inventory list to be accurate. (Please contact your Caterpillar representative for
more information about this option)
a. Manually adjust inventory recommendations from method #2 to build the MHV
inventory by using a logical rationalization process.
Note 1: NACD has published a recommended POPS-M stocking list generated for a parts department and it can be used as a baseline
for a hose van POPS-M inventory strategy. To view the POPS-M inventory list, please see Appendix IV.
Note 2: The initial inventory will continuously change over the first 3-6 months into the program. The inventory is a living list. As
mentioned above, any inventory list generated must be analyzed on a regular basis to meet changing customer needs and any
additional markets served.
There are several different ways to track inventory on mobile hose vans. These options will vary
depending on the structure and individual needs of each dealership. One method of tracking
inventory is the static inventory method. This method is currently being used by Hawthorne
Machinery in Southern California.
Once a master inventory list is generated (see options 1 and 2 above), a stationary, inventory-only
store is constructed in DBS. In order to initially stock the hose van store, parts are stock
transferred from the main warehouse to the hose vans. After this step, vans are simply replenished
when products are sold on a daily basis. No additional stock transfers are required from the
warehouse unless there is an addition or deletion from the master stock list.
1. A parts list can be maintained for each individual truck (including bin locations for parts).
-OR-
2. An excel spreadsheet can be maintained to monitor increases and decreases in stock for
individual vans.
Under this inventory method, items are replenished as they are made. A printout is given to the main
warehouse and the products sold are pulled and given to the van operator to replenish their stock and
bring inventory levels back to those denoted on the master-stocking list. Static inventory does not
replenish product sold by the inch or centimeter (i.e. bulk hose, armor guard, anti-abrasion sleeves,
etc.) When a van has a small amount of bulk hose remaining, it is exchanged for the full allotted
amount indicated on the master stocking list. The short piece of hose is either used by the parts
department or scrapped and accounted for under monthly obsolescence.
OPERATIONAL PLAN
A well-prepared operational plan should outline the key people and their area of responsibility for
the mobile hose van program. The management and operations team should consist of:

This chart may vary from dealership to dealership; this organizational structure should receive first
consideration.
A successful mobile hose van program begins with recruiting qualified hose van representatives6 to
operate the vehicles. It is extremely important to attract candidates with a blend of mechanical
aptitude and sales skills as this person will fulfill the roles of both salesperson and hose assembler.
A mobile hose van operator may come from a dealers hose assembly area, parts counter, warehouse,
or from outside the dealership. When selecting a candidate, please keep in mind that the attitude and
aptitude of the operator will have a profound impact on the success of a mobile hose van program.
Training
A complete product and sales training program is necessary for a successful mobile hose van
program. Modules will be developed to cover training in all areas that currently do not offer a
training program.
6
The title of the hose van representative should be reflective of their compensation. In some states only by
the use of Sales Representative can a compensation structure, which includes a base salary plus
commission, be rewarded to the sales representative. Please check with your human resources department
and consult state laws.
It is recommended that a new operator spend at least one week riding with a more experienced
operator. This ride-along will allow the new operator to become familiar with the vehicle layout,
tooling, inventory, and general procedures. It may also be beneficial to have the novice operator
stock the van to become more familiar with product locations.
The evaluation of a mobile hose van operator should consider multiple performance factors. The
following are suggested areas of consideration:
Compensation
Successful mobile hose van models include compensation incentives for the operator. There should
be a method for an operator to receive additional compensation beyond that of his or her base salary.
One suggestion is to give an operator commission on sales above the van break-even level. There
are a variety of promotions/contests that can be employed to motivate operators and increase sales
performance. Keep in mind that many operators of competitive vans work solely on a commission
basis. The Caterpillar mobile hose van compensation model should foster an entrepreneurial spirit
that is incentive driven.
Caterpillar dealer mobile hose service vehicles will vary in size and layout based on government
regulations, opportunity, and/or climate. All vehicles are custom designed and will therefore vary
between dealers. Appendix V provides photos of different configurations currently being used by
Caterpillar dealers including:
North American vehicles
European vehicles
Australian vehicles
Caterpillar recommends the following vehicles for mobile hose van program use. Appendix VI
outlines these options and lists vehicle specifications and base prices.
Ford E-Series Cargo Van
Ford F-450/550 Super Duty Chassis
Freightliner Sprinter Cargo Van
Iveco Daily Van
Ford Transit Cargo Van
Mobile hose service vehicles have limited storage capacity and weight restrictions based on vehicle
type. The van layout should be designed to maximize interior working space and should have
adequate lighting, ventilation, and storage space. If possible, the compressor and generator should
be out of the active work area.
Generally, the dealer will contract the services of an outside company to install the storage
components, electrical system, and power mechanism for the hose vans. Here are some general
suggestions regarding this activity:
Tooling
The recommended hose assembly tooling is shown in Appendix VIII. This tooling was chosen to
enable the dealer to fabricate assemblies with XT hose reusable and permanent couplings,
low/medium pressure couplings, and special application couplings. A list of miscellaneous
tooling/equipment and estimated cost is also provided. For additional tooling options, refer to the
Hose and Coupling Reference Guide, PECP5030-03. For questions concerning Caterpillar Tools
and Supplies, please call the CSTG Hotline: 1-800-542-8665 or consult NENG2500-05, 2002 Tools
and Shop Products Guide.
COMMUNICATION PLAN
Operations Manual
Suggested operations manual content and literature list for mobile hose service vehicle are in
appendix IX. The purpose of the manual is to provide one safe source of dealer policies, procedures,
and minimum operating standards for the mobile hose service business. The literature list includes
available materials to properly assemble hose and couplings, to distribute to customers, and to label
coupling bins.
Day-to-Day Operations
The following day-to-day operations issues should be considered and documented in the mobile hose
service operation procedures manual.
Communications
Mobile communications are essential for this vehicle and both phone and fax capability are
recommended. Fax capability allows the technician to forward copies of PSO's to the branch for
quick invoicing and restocking.

Service Hours
Most vehicles are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This may require that the vehicle stay with
the operator after hours. Competitive information has shown that only about 1% of the vehicle
revenue comes from after hours callout, but the customers perception that it is available 24/7 is also
important.
Pricing
Mobile hose service is a premium priced service. Competitive pricing is likely to be based on
published list prices that far exceed Caterpillar Suggested Consumer Price (SCP). The most
important criteria in determining pricing will be competitive information. Dealers with mobile hose
vehicles operating in their territory will want to analyze competitive prices and set their own prices
accordingly

Appendix II -
Mobile Hose Van Strategic
Marketing Plan
The following information discusses the differences between POPS-C, POPS-M, & POPS-I in regards to the
Hose & Coupling business. Although hose and coupling examples are used, an understanding of POPS can be
applied to all areas of Parts & Service. Remember that POPS information references parts sales, whereas
PINS (Percentage of Industry Sales) references prime product.
Only aftermarket hose and coupling sales sold to Cat machines will affect POPS-C. POPS-C is our main
focus, followed by POPS-M business. Dealer focus should not be placed on the POPS-I opportunity until a
dealer is firmly established in POPS-C and POPS-M.
POPS-C is the percentage of Caterpillar hose and coupling sales in relation to total hose and coupling
sales potential, for use on Caterpillar prime product. POPS-C efforts are our first priority. Dealers
should merchandise Cat hose and couplings and their ability to support hose, coupling and assembly
business for Caterpillar machines using Caterpillar product. This is done through mobile hose service
and/or on-site hose assembly operations.
POPS-M is the percentage of Caterpillar hose and coupling sales for mobile equipment in relation to
total hose and coupling sales for mobile equipment. Mobile equipment would include Caterpillar as
well as Deere, Komatsu, etc. Dealers would pursue the hose, coupling and assembly business for non-
Caterpillar equipment used by Caterpillar owners. This is done in conjunction with the POPS-C
business and will require some additional inventory and in-depth training of identification practices.
Since 1998, Caterpillar has introduced 142 new Cat couplings for 716/294/844 and XT hose. These
new couplings were designed to meet customer needs for hose assemblies on other brands of mobile
construction equipment. These offerings allow dealers to pursue target accounts and other incremental
business where additional couplings are required to meet customer needs. Approximately 90-95% of
all couplings for mobile equipment can be found in our Hose & Coupling Reference Guide and the
Hydraulic Information System (HIS). Other couplings that are needed will be added as necessary.
POPS-I is the percentage of Caterpillar hose and couplings sales in relation to total industry hose and
coupling sales. Industry sales refer to all hose and coupling sales, including Cat equipment, mobile
equipment and sales for commercial and industrial applications. Dealers would pursue the hose and
coupling business on the same basis as a Gates, Manuli, Parker, and etc. distributor. The pursuit of
this broader hose and coupling business must be done without diminishing POPS-C efforts. Dealers
must first be a fully effective POPS-C dealer to participate. A wide range of Anchor Coupling Inc.
and Caterpillar inventory (both high performance and industry standard products) would be required
as well as trained personnel to sell and support this business. POPS-I is not for every dealer. POPS-I
implementation requires an expressed interest and agreement of the dealer, the Cat Marketing
Organization, Parts & Service Marketing, and the Hose & Coupling Business Team. This requires a
sales and service agreement to represent Anchor Coupling Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of
Caterpillar Inc.

Vehicle Layouts
Caterpillar currently does not offer a standard mobile hose service vehicle. This appendix
provides general guidelines and shows dealer examples of mobile hose service vehicles.
Exterior Graphics
The figure above illustrates a recommended exterior design for the sides and rear of the mobile hose
service vehicle. Exterior graphics are designed to feature Caterpillar hose and coupling product and
the Caterpillar dealer. The size and styling of the wording and graphics should be consistent.
The dealer's name, phone number and "24 Hour Service" (if appropriate) should also be highlighted.
All text and graphics should be visible/readable when the van is on the road.
Interior Layout
Mobile hose service vehicles have limited storage capacity and weight restrictions based on vehicle
type. The vehicle should be lightweight and durable with careful attention to efficient workflow
ergonomics and maximum space utilization.
Space is required inside the box for a hose machine, cutoff saw, power supply, air compressor,
workbench, oil storage, and hose and coupling storage. Remember to provide easy access to
equipment requiring maintenance (power supply, air compressor, saw, etc.).
Air compressor is required to power the Hose Cleaner Group and provide air for
other needs
Hose storage recommendation:
Larger diameter in coil bins or in tubes running length of the vehicle
Smaller diameter store in coils inside vehicle on spool racks
Coupling / Adapter storage is recommended in plastic modular bins
Oil storage space should be allocated to hold at least three 5-gallon (20 liters) pails of
top up oil
Floor should be oil impervious, no-slip, and easy to clean
Exterior Layout
In order to conserve space, it is recommended that the generator be mounted on the outside of the
vehicle.

Contamination Control
As a Caterpillar dealer you're interested in the overall health of the customer's equipment, so this is
an excellent time to bring up contamination control. A failed hose means possible system
contamination. Caterpillar offers a contamination control flyer (PEDP9126), video (PEVN4632),
and a Hydraulic System Management Guide (PEGP6028-03) to help you educate customers.
Mobile hose service operator could enroll customer in dealer lab particle-counting program or
provide SOS sampling kits to customers. Contamination control can also be promoted through the
use of the Cat Hose Cleaning Group.
Failure Analysis
Mobile hose service operator should identify cause of hose assembly failure. Depending on results
of failure analysis, operator may be able to recommend a Caterpillar product better suited to the
particular application.
Examples: Caterpillar's XT-3 ES hose is far more abrasion resistant than most 100R12 hose products offered by the
competition. Or, armor guarding may be required to provide more protection. Cat 716 or 294 hose, with it's high temperature
capability and superior construction and materials is especially suited to demanding applications where competitive offerings
are failing prematurely.
Fluids
A failed hose also means loss of fluid. Mobile hose service vehicles should be designed to carry
three to five five-gallon pails of system matched Cat Hydraulic Oil to top off the customer's tank.
Environment
Mobile hose van operators are encouraged to carry products that will assist them with clean-up in the
event of soil contamination due to broken hydraulic hoses and lines.
Referral Business
In addition to immediate customer needs, the mobile hose service operation can also be on the
lookout for other hydraulic and non-hydraulic repair needs. For example, a leaking cylinder is a
reseal and light hone sales opportunity. Operator should be well versed in the hydraulic and other
parts and service products you offer, and willing and able to get the business.
Other parts and service promotion materials are available to assist your selling efforts. For a
complete, up-to-date listing, please contact your Caterpillar Parts and Service Sales Representative.
In summary, there is more to the mobile hose service vehicle than just hose. You can leverage your
investment, maximize sales, and improve customer satisfaction by providing a wide variety of
solutions to your customers' maintenance and repair needs.
