ES350-Homework 05

1. (20pts) Obtain a relation for the fin efficiency for a fin of constant cross-sectional area Ac , perimeter p,
length L, and thermal conductivity k exposed to convection to a medium at T with a heat transfer coefficient
h. Assume the fins are sufficiently long so that the temperature of the fin at the tip is nearly T . Take the
temperature of the fin at the base to be Tb and neglect heat transfer from the fin tips. Simplify the relation for
(a) a circular fin of diameter D and (b) rectangular fins of thickness t.

2. (5pts) What is the difference between fin effectiveness and the fin efficiency?

3. (5pts) Hot water is to be cooled as it flows through the tubes exposed to atmospheric air. Fins are to
be attached in order to enhanced heat transfer. Would you recommend attaching the fins inside or outside the
tubes? Why?

4. (5pts) Two pin fins are identical, except that the diameter of one of them is twice the diameter of the
other. For which fin will the (a) fin effectiveness and (b) fin efficiency be higher? Explain.

5. (20pts) A pin fin of uniform, cross-sectional area is fabricated of an aluminium alloy (k = 160W/m K).
The fin diameter is D = 4mm, and the fin is exposed to convective conditions characterized by h = 220W/m2 K.
It is reported that the fin efficiency is f = 0.65. Determine the fin length L and the fin effectiveness f . Account
for tip convection.
