Hydraulic tensioning devices are another method used for tightening threaded fasteners. The
hydraulic tensioner is a special tool which seats against the joint, grips the bolt end, and through
applied hydraulic fluid pressure the bolt or stud is pulled in tension. Then the pull force equals
the desired bolt preload plus an additional amount to compensate for relaxation, the nut is run
down against the joined material. The load in the hydraulic tensioner is relieved and because the
bolt is held by the nut from returning to its original length, tension is retained.
The illustration on the cover demonstrates one type of hydraulic tensioner. Hydraulic fluid from
a pump is supplied to the ram in the head of the tensioner. This action creates an axial force
which is transmitted to the bolt by the puller.
Traditional methods of tightening nuts, bolts and studs such as slugging, hand wrenching or
impact wrenching are often inefficient and dangerous.
Accurate and dependable axial loading is difficult to achieve by the use of traditional methods.
Torque measurement is not a reliable method of determining bolt load, as up to 80 percent of the
energy required to tighten a threaded fastener is wasted in overcoming friction.
Safe Operations: These tools minimize exposure to hazardous environments. Safety is assured
by eliminating the "hot bolting" process where fire related risks and bolt breakage can occur.
Accuracy: Better accuracy is achieved in tightening a bolt when the tension load is applied
directly; not achieved through a twisting force (torque). The effects of friction are negligible.
Uniformity: A number of hydraulic tensioners can be linked together for simultaneous bolt
tightening. This eliminates uneven bolt loads and produces a reliable seal. This is essential for
uniformity in gaskets where leak free connections are required. Repeated bolt tension can be
achieved on each bolt with no variation in bolt loading.
Time Saving: By tightening many bolts simultaneously the time to assemble multibolted
connections is significantly reduced. Most hydraulic tensioners can be used with minimum
effort and maximum safety.
Compact and Versatility: Hydraulic tensioners can be easily used where space is a problem for
traditional tightening methods. This tool is quite light and simple to install. Any type of thread
can be used and a variety of pulling heads can be supplied.
Safety precautions
WARNING: High pressure hydraulics requires that the following basic rules are followed.
ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES when working with or near the pressurized hydraulic
system.
Always check the following points before pressurizing the hydraulic system:
(a) Check that the hydraulic harness is fully connected. There should be
no loose ends and every male nipple should be connected to its
corresponding female connector.
(c) Check that the threaded portion of the tensioning tool is screwed on
the stud and that the thread engagement is sufficient. NOTE: The
thread projection of the stud above the top of the nut should be
sufficient to allow the tensioning tool to engage the stud a minimum
of one (1) stud diameter. Check that the tensioner is seated squarely
on the bridge piece, and that the bridge is seated squarely on the work
piece.
Never exceed the maximum working pressure for each stud size or tensioner. Maximum
working pressure for standard tensioners is 21,750 psi.
Never exceed the maximum extension for the equipment. NOTE: A line will appear when the
tool is close to maximum extension.
When pressurizing the system, observe the gauge, and be ready to stop, at the required pressure.
Never leave the pressurized system unattended. If you must leave the area release the pressure
and ensure that the return to tank valve on the pump unit is fully open.
Read both Tooling and Hydraulic Hand Pump and Control Console Operation and Maintenance
Manuals prior to operation.
Never pressurize the Control Console or Hand pump unless the outlet is either connected to the
tensioning system or is safely blanked with a blanking plug.
1. Determine the proper pump pressure as shown on page 8. Lubricate the threads on the
stud and the two mating surfaces of the tensioner with moly lubricant (under 700 degrees
F) or other proper lubricant for the application.
2. Select the Control Console or Hand Pump depending on which is best for the
application.
4. Turn all nuts down hand-tight using a manual hand wrench. Excessive force is
unnecessary as the tensioners will do the work.
5. Select the correct tensioner, including the bridge, body, threaded insert, and
nut rotating socket (if required), and nut-turning bar for the size of stud to be
tensioned.
8. Screw the threaded insert on to the stud until the body is tight against the bridge.
The body should not be tightened down hard on to the bridge, but snugged down.
10. Connect the hydraulic harness as shown in Figure A. Remember to observe safety
instructions.
Figure A
Typical hydraulic hose arrangement
11. Operate the hydraulic pump to pressurize the tools to pressure, P. Observe the extension
and pressure constantly during the operation, and do not exceed the required pressure
for the application. If the maximum extension is reached before the necessary pressure
is attained, immediately stop the pump and tighten nut, Release the pressure slowly to
avoid possible gauge damage. Return the threaded insert to zero extension. This is done
by tightening the threaded insert on to the stud with the nut-turning bar until zero
extension is achieved. As the fluid from each tool has to flow back to the pump, the
return stroke may be quite slow. Make sure the needle valve on power supply is fully
open. Otherwise pressurize until the desired operating pressure is reached.
12. While holding the operating pressure constant use a nut-turning bar to screw down the
nut on to the top face of the flange. Ensure that the nut is properly seated, and tap the
nut-turning bar lightly with a small hammer to ensure that the nut is snug.
14. Return the threaded insert to zero extension. This is done by tightening the threaded
insert on to the stud with the nut-turning bar until zero extension is achieved.
NOTE: As the fluid from each tool has to flow back to the pump, the
return stroke may be quite slow. Make sure the needle valve
on power supply is fully open
15. Unscrew threaded insert and remove the body and bridge.
16. Re-position the tools over the next set of studs to be tensioned and continue as
before until all the studs have been tensioned once. This will complete the first
cycle.
17. Re-position the tensioners on the first set of studs tightened and repeat operations
7-14.
18. If the nut is completely tight, no further rotation with the nut-turning bar will be possible.
19. If the nut can be turned, then another complete tensioning cycle must be performed.
20. When the nut is tight by testing, the stud tensioning is complete.
Loosening Procedure
1. The release procedure is identical to the tightening procedure with the following
exceptions.
(a) When screwing the tensioning head on to the stud, the insert must be
screwed down until there is zero extension. THE INSERT MUST NOW
BE TURNED BACK ONE HALF TURN. This is to prevent the tensioner
becoming locked on to the stud. One half turn is usually sufficient, but if for
any reason the tensioner is locked onto the stud then re tighten as per the
tightening procedure and repeat, then back off 3/4 turn.
(b) When the required pressure is reached, the nut must be unscrewed using
the nut-turning bar. If for any reason (i.e. corrosion or thread damage)
the nut will not unscrew, DO NOT increase the pressure beyond the
recommended maximum operating pressure of the tensioner or above the
maximum stress of the stud. Once the nut has been lifted off the face of the
flange, further increasing the pressure will not help. If the nut cannot be
removed using the nut-turning bar, then it will be necessary to use a
BOLTTECH-MANNINGS hydraulic wrench to loosen the nut.
Maintenance
The tensioner is of rugged construction and utilizes reliable seals. The only maintenance that
may occasionally be required is the repair of a hydraulic fitting or replacement of a seal.
Hydraulic Fittings
BOLTTECH-MANNINGS tensioners utilize a dowty seal and hydraulic thread sealant. In the event
of leakage from this connection, or if the connection has to be re-made, it is
important to remember the following points:
(1) Dowty seals should not be re-used. A new seal should always be
fitted. (ii) The threads should be re-sealed using Loctite hydraulic
sealant, or a similar compound.
- Entire sealing device and all surfaces, which it will traverse on its way to
the groove, must be free of all foreign material. Cleaning procedure should
include a solvent rinse of all components (including tools used) followed
by a wipe-down with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Both the seal and its installation path must be lubricated prior to assembly.
Both the inner and outer sealing device is made up of two parts: (1) seal (2) back-up ring
Back-up Ring: Bolttech-Mannings tensioners are assembled with either a square or two piece cam
Backup.Prior to installing the seals install the backup rings as shown on the next
page. Please be aware that the two piece cam backups can be installed
backwards. Never substitute a two piece cam Backup with a square
backup or a square backup with a two piece cam Backup.
Inner Seal: After the back up is in place insert the seal by folding it, avoid sharp bends. Care
should be taken to ensure that the lip edge faces toward the pressure end of the
piston.
Outer Seal: After the back up is in place locate part of the outer seal in the groove, and work
around the O/D stretching the seal over the boss until it finally slips completely
into the groove. Be advised that a reasonable amount of force may be required to
stretch the seal. Do not use sharp instruments to assist, as this may damage the
seal.
Load Calculations
Before the tightening process begins the following calculations must be made to determine the
pump pressures required to properly seal the joint.
Additional nomenclature:
F relaxation factor
P pump pressure
The first calculation is to determine the final bolt preload if it is not already known:
The next step is to determine the stud relaxation factor, F, from figure "C" and then calculate the
required pump pressures:
P = F x Bpreload / Aten
