MOMENT RESISTING CONNECTIONS WITH POST-INSTALLED

REINFORCEMENT

Abstract:
As a result of the increasing need for rehabilitation and strengthening of existing structures, post installed
reinforcing bars in concrete are becoming more important.

Some of the tested injection systems - available for post installed bars - have proved to be reliable and to
provide behavior at least equivalent to cast in place connections.

For post installed connections, only bars with straight ends can be used in drilled holes instead of bars
with hooks or bends as given in the examples of frame corners in the actual standards. Therefore, careful
modeling in the concrete is necessary for the transfer of bending moments.

A series of tests on slab to wall connections with straight connecting reinforcement has been performed
for opening and closing moments. Different bonding mortar systems for anchoring the bars were used to
assess the effect of the ultimate bond stress. Comparison was also made with cast in place straight and
hooked bars. Some anchored bars were equipped with strain gauges to show the steel stress distributions
in the post-installed system.

On this basis detailed design concept for the anchorage length of reinforcement bars for frame node
connections has been developed by means of the strut-and-tie model. The design model has been adapted
to the fundamentals of Eurocode 2.

The results are presented and compared to the proposed design model and to results of computer
simulation. They offer new economic applications in rehabilitation and strengthening of concrete
structures.
