Abhijit Malankar - Letter of recommendation

This summer it has been my pleasure and honor to coach Abhijit, or Abhi for short, on the Climate-KIC
summer school The Journey. From my first impressions of Abhijit I deduced that he thinks deep about
what he is shown or told, because he listens well and takes everything into account before drawing
uniquely insightful conclusions. For a person of his experience I know there were lectures and
workshops on The Journey that wouldnt necessarily challenge or engage him, but he always applied
himself and sought in every occasion an opportunity to learn and better himself. Uniquely Abhi is that
he combines a calm and patient manner with an extraordinary drive to accomplish his ideas. This gave
his team great strength and vision, also at times where pressure was high and uncertainty was great.

Early on in the Journey he had mustered a team around his idea called Uni5-Elements. Not surprisingly,
because he had a lot of knowledge about energy needs universally and the technology that could fulfill
them. His background includes practical engineering field work and start-up experience, altogether
making him perfectly equipped to bring Uni5-Elements into practice. The idea of modular & PnP kits of
green energy devices targeted at common individuals like us rather than just big energy utilities has a lot
of potential , and can improve the lives of many people. For the five week pressure cooker that is The
Journey, it was also to all-encompassing. Abhi and his team eventually came up with another energy
innovation that was simple enough to create a business plan for in short time. Without going into too
much detail I can tell it is a smart circuit breaker that makes offices more energy efficient at a fraction of
the cost of an equivalent office an automation solution. The idea won the innovation award at the final
pitch event of the journey.

I am pleased to know that Abhi has since returned to his mission of Uni5-Elements and is applying to the
Berlin Greenhouse. The conditions there are right for the scale of his idea, which could not be done in a
few weeks but certainly can be done over the course of a year. And with done I am not talking about a
rewritten business plan and some pictures, I expect Abhi to deliver working prototypes and field-tested
product given his skillset and connections all over the world . He could also greatly benefit from the
greenhouse to further his pitching skills and to frame the value proposition of Uni5-Elements.

Above and beyond his faculties Abhijit is a great person to work with; inquisitive, intellectually
challenging, original, thoughtful, charismatic and gentle. He is determined to make his idea into a
climate-saving and life-improving business and the Greenhouse could be a good stepping stone towards
that goal.

Through his thoughts and actions it is very clear that he is willing to think out of the box, taking
extra efforts to change things for the better and accept the challenge to bring them into reality
by his entrepreneurial attitude, enthusiasm and creativity. He indeed comes across as a
committed climate crusader through his consistent efforts towards ensuring a sustainable future
for all levels of the society .

During his projects ENGO ARTI he has been part and worked closely in teams of multicultural
groups with diverse nationalities & career levels as a team member , working together to
realize common goals and share ideas .It has helped him to understand how to work
comfortably in a team with people of diverse fields and also learn from the different expertise
and views of team members .

Through the number of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects he has implemented
together as a team member while working with the ENGO-ARTI he has learned that how
teamwork improves groups synergies ,supports a more empowered way of thinking & working,
helps to remove barriers and constraints , promotes a flatter and leaner organization, with no
hierarchis , encourages multi-disciplinary work where teams cut across organizational divides
effortlessly , fosters flexibility and responsiveness, especially the ability to respond to changes
faster, finally generating a sense of team achievement, equity and camaraderie, so much
essential for a developing a motivated team work atmosphere.
Earlier to this while working with the environmental NGO - ARTI , he and his team had taken on
the responsibility to help them set up an e-commerce website for sale of various sustainable
products online which helped them to increase sales and income and avoid closure of there
production unit. Mr.Malankar was instrumental in this entrepreneurial activity in setting up the
online clean energy business from scratch handling responsibilities like procurements, site
publishing , e-commerce and logistics.( website link -
http://www.indiamart.com/samuchitenvirotech/biomass-fueled-cooking-devices.html ).
Earlier to this he had also setup an E-commerce venture as a sole promoter and entrepreneur
to sell Handicrafts , handcrafted ethnic Pearl Jewelry sourced from skilled rural craftsman
ensuring them sustainable employment all year round ,using the (www.martjack.com) e-
commerce platform. Here he along with his team of social workers were responsible for market

multidisciplinary groups , network with and relate personally to like-minded peers at all career
levels, learn the International climate change mitigation policy framework , gain ability to
develop and deliver ideas ,products and services in response to climate challenges .Most of all
he will get an opportunity to create a unique business idea working together with a like minded
peers related to climate change adaptation and mitigation supported by business coaches ,
entrepreneurs and climate innovators all helping to finally pitch his teams idea as a potential
business venture and receive very valuable feedback.

I also believe that the Journey 2015 will give him the opportunity to interact with diverse
academic and business partners, give access to professional opportunities in clean energy
businesses and alumni networks along with participation opportunity to interact with
entrepreneurs and climate innovators , which can go a long way to help him to better plan and
realize the potential of his entrepreneurial ideas , get a team together of like minded individuals
and bring the clean energy business ideas to the market faster and in a more systematic and
structured manner . Also i sincerely feel , it is essential for him to be a part of a team and a
support network which shares his motivation and field of work in clean energy entreprenuership
& business so he can learn from there practical experiances and quickly look for support and
guidance without giving up when he needs it the most and i hence think Climate KIC summer
school and journey is the right platform which will provide him all of this to sustain and grow.

Mr. Malankar has often expressed his keen desire to pursue in the sustainable development
field as a clean energy entrepreneur and considering his entrepreneurial spirit,open-
mindedness, team spirit eagerness to learn new skills as well as his training in Business
Management combined with the on field experience he has gained with ENGO-ARTI, I am sure
that he is bound to succeed in all the ventures he undertakes henceforth as well .

Hence I highly recommend Mr. Abhijit Malankar without any reservations to your prestigious
Climate KIC Summer School - The Journey Program 2015 , since I truly believe he will be
able to make the best use of its Innovation and Entrepreneurship streams staying true, at the
same time towards his commitments to the Community and Society as well as stay on course
in his journey as a climate crusader .
He has all my best wishes and support for the entrepreneurship ventures he intends to start for
sustainable development and climate protection.
Please feel free to communicate with me regarding this recommendation and any other
information that might be helpful.

With Best Regards

Empowering People Award 2015 Team

Siemens-Stiftung

18 January 2016

Letter of recommendation for Mr Abhijit Malankar

To Whom it May Concern,

We are writing this letter to recommend Mr Abhijit Malankar, for his Sustainable Energy Ecosystem
development based solution entitled Sustainable Ecosystem Development by Productive Use of
Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicles abbreviated as EVRUEL through his social enterprise venture
UNI5-Elements to the Empowering People, Award 2015 by Siemens-Stiftung.

We know him as an associate member of our Climate KIC organization (www.climate-kic.org/), Berlin
chapter and also as a student of the International Masters Program in Solar Technology at Global
Production Engineering (GPE), TU Berlin, Germany where he is writing his Masters thesis focused on
EVRUEL which is being submitted for this award. Earlier to his Masters at TU Berlin, he has almost 10
years of excellent work experience in software quality assurance and sustainable energy domains in
International corporations and also holds a diploma in Business management from SIBM (India) and a
Bachelors in Electronics Engineering. He is also Six Sigma Green Belt and ISTQB certified Quality
Engineer.

Based on his research over the last 3 years, he has developed a very detailed business model oriented
solution titled Sustainable Ecosystem development by productive use of Renewable Energy and Electric
Vehicles (EVRUEL) which is focused on multiple aspects for empowering rural and urban locations
worldwide through use of renewable energy such as:

- creating local jobs by enabling local entrepreneurs as franchises thus avoiding migration of
rural population to urban areas in search of jobs ,

- energy inclusivity through use of renewable off grid generation and DC micro-grids,

- enabling faster and cleaner mobility using Electric Vehicles for passenger and goods transport,
reducing carbon emissions and providing viable alternative to fossil fuel transport thus
promoting local economic growth

- empowering local entrepreneurs by an inclusive development model

- using energy availability through renewables and financial innovation for creating local small
scale sustainable industry and improving local trade, commerce and economy,

- creating a highly scalable and replicable solution based on hub and spoke model ,

At scale this EVRUEL solution has a potential to be implemented at nearly 50,000 sites in India over
next 5 years, with total of almost 5 GWp Off grid Solar PV + Small wind + BioGas based generation
facilities and nearly 0.5 million Electric Vehicles deployed on the road, together saving almost 5 million
metric tons of Co2 emissions / year. As a first step to showcase a proof of concept to Green Investors ,
Mr Abhijit Malankar has designed a scaled down version of the project for pilot implementation in the
target location of the coastal rural village of Alibaug, in the State of Maharashtra at a cost of just
$250,000. For financing this pilot, Mr Abhijit Malankar is in touch with various Clean Energy promoting
organizations including the India Innovation Lab for Green Finance (http://greenfinancelab.in/) which
is a sister initiative of the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance and Echoing Green Org.
(www.echoinggreen.org/) while receiving ongoing mentoring support from our Climate KIC organization
(www.climate-kic.org/).

Incidentally his Masters thesis at TU Berlin is also based on business model of EVRUEL project which
has received technical guidance and review support from Faculty of Engineering and Environment at
Northumbria University, UK and the manufacturer Mahindra and Mahindra who are the only
mainstream Electric Car manufacturers in India through their group company Mahindra Reva
(www.mahindrareva.com) . He also received support from the University of CaliforniaLuskin Center
for Innovation (www.luskin.ucla.edu/content/luskin-center-innovation) and from Technische Universitt
(TU) Berlin.

Mr Abhijit Malankar has recently won the audience award in August 2015 during presentation held at
University of Warwick (UK) of the EVRUEL business model while completing the summer school for
clean technology innovation (www.climate-kic.org/global-summer-school/) which focuses on creating
clean tech entrepreneurs by teaching them principles of Lean Scientist , Design Thinking and
Entrepreneurship over 5 weeks while travelling through 3 countries (NL-HU-UK).

Earlier still in April 2015 , his team UNI5-Elements won the best green business model prize for the
above EVRUEL business model solution at the MES 2015 conference (www.microenergysystems.tu-
berlin.de/conference/) jointly organized by Berkeley Rural Energy Group at UC Berkeley and TU Berlin,
thus giving further credit to the practical business model solution he has put together.

Coming from a developing country like India, his social background also gives him the necessary
understanding of the actual grass-roots conditions so very essential when designing technologically
appropriate sustainable solutions. He is also a very motivated and committed social entrepreneur with
very strong team building skills demonstrated in putting together his social enterprise venture called
UNI5-Elements for which he is at the moment striving hard to put in place the necessary funding to
run a pilot project of EVRUEL in coastal rural village of Alibaug in India which is highly energy poor and
thus lacks local industry and commerce.

We at Climate KIC organization hence sincerely recommend Mr Abhijit Malankar without any
reservations, for the Empowering people Award 2015 by Siemens-Stiftung. We trust he will make the
best use of this award to empower people at the bottom of the pyramid in developing countries
through his planned venture of EVRUEL through social enterprise of UNI5-Elements. He has all of
our best wishes and support for the entrepreneurship ventures he intends to undertake for sustainable
development and climate change mitigation.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me regarding this recommendation and any other
information that might be helpful. We wish him all the very best in his application to Empowering
people. Award 2015 .

Kindest regards
