INTRODUCTION
The 6550 is a photocopier controller that forms part of the Infineer Chipcard range of products.
This manual is intended as an overview of the options and functional menus available to the System
Manager and Service Technicians.
FEATURES OF 6550
4 Price Lines. Prices can be set up at 6550 using the Operator Menu Card.
Operates with Personal Cash, and Discount, Subsidy or Departmental Cash facilities on
Infineer Chipcards.
CONNECTION TO A PHOTOCOPIER
Interfacing.
Interfacing to a photocopier is achieved via the 25-way d-type connector, H5, at the rear of the 6550.
Two relays in the 6550 interface circuit, referred to as the Main Relay (RL2) and the Aux Relay (RL1),
control enabling and disabling of the photocopier. Four opto-coupled inputs in the 6550 interface
circuit monitor billing pulse feedback signals to determine when copies are produced. The Aux relay
and billing pulse inputs can be configured to operate with different copier types for universal
interfacing.
All inputs are factory set for 9 - 35 V operation. However, the 6550 may be configured for low voltage
(5 V) inputs if required. To set the input voltage range, refer to Figure 3 for their locations then set the
jumpers according to Table 1.
The voltage applied to any interface connection must not exceed 42.4V AC PEAK or 60v DC in
order to comply with the SELV regulations. External barriers must be employed if these limits
are likely to be exceeded.
The 6550 can be configured to operate with either direct inputs or passive inputs. With direct inputs
the copier indicates a copy has been taken by supplying a voltage across the billing input. With
passive inputs the copier indicates a copy has been taken by closing the circuit between the billing
inputs. To set the input type, refer to Figure 3. for their locations then set the jumpers according to
Table 2. The factory default setting is for direct input.
Safety measures are also taken to help prevent possible damage to the copier or 6550 in the event of
incorrect connection to the copier by unauthorised persons. Current limiting resistors are fitted in
series with the common contacts of both copier-enabling Relays. Both current-limiting resistors may
be overridden if required by closing the jumper links as detailed in Table 3. The default setting is to
have the resistors in circuit.

Careful note must be taken of the orientation of all connectors within the 6550 casing, so that they may
be replaced correctly if disconnected. The connections to the photocopier are as shown in figure 1
below:

POWER SUPPLY
The power supply is an external 5 V or 12 V DC unit with a 100-240 V AC 47-63 Hz input. This is
terminated in a 2.5 mm jack plug with the positive voltage on the centre pin and the 0 V on the outside.
To configure the board for the different input voltages, refer to figure 3 to locate its position, and set
Jumper J17 according to table 4 below.
This jumper will be factory set to the correct position for the power supply provided with the
terminal.
Connecting an incorrect power supply to the 6550 may cause permanent damage to the
terminal.
Unauthorised persons should not carry out changing of external power supplies.
SAFETY NOTES
The mains socket-outlet should be close to the terminal and should be easily
accessible.
Always ensure that the mains supply is disconnected before removing the cover
of the terminal.
The 6550 may be supplied with either 5 V or 12 V relays, RL1 and RL2. To configure the terminal for
the supplied Relays, refer to figure 3 to locate its position, and set Jumper J7 according to table 5
below.
TRANSACTION LOG
The transaction log can store 9213 transactions without having to download. When the terminals
transaction memory reaches 100% full and the Auto Overwrite option is Off, the terminal will go out of
service until the transactions are downloaded from the terminal. The terminal will automatically come
back into service when the transactions have been downloaded. If the Auto Overwrite Option is
switched On, when the terminals transaction memory reaches 100% full the terminal will continue to
operate and start overwriting the oldest transactions. In this mode data will be lost and should only be
used if the terminal must not go out of service. If the terminal is connected to the network all the time
and the communications software is running the terminal will download any transactions it has stored
when the terminal is not in use. The terminal cannot communicate with the network when a card is
inserted in the terminal.
The transaction memory can only be cleared using a System Initialisation card. The Initialise option
should be selected and set to 14 to clear only the transaction memory. To clear the terminals memory
and the transaction memory together, set the Initialise option to 21. Transactions cleared using the
Initialise 14 or 21 options can still be retrieved using Data Extraction.
Note. When the terminal is first setup, the Machine Number must be set to avoid conflicts with other
terminals on the network. The Machine Number is no longer Cleared during an Initialise 7 or 21, and
changing of the machine number from any value other than 0 will result in all transactions being
completely deleted. This is to insure that duplicate data does not appear in the database under
different machine numbers.

USER OPERATION
When a User Card is inserted, the terminal will first display the user's name and ID, (if User Disp =
On). After a short pause the credit values of the card purses will be displayed. The screen will then
change to allow a purse to be selected. If PIN Code protection is enabled on the terminal, on the first
presentation of the User Card since its creation (or since its PIN Code has been reset) the terminal will
prompt for a new PIN Code to be entered before the start of the above sequence.
Once a purse has been selected, the display will inform the user that a deposit is being deducted. The
deposit is a security against the possibility of the card being removed before all copies have been
billed. The new credit value will be displayed on the screen. When the photocopier has been enabled
the terminal will sound a dual beep. Where PIN protection is enabled for the purse type selected, the
display will prompt for the PIN Code to be entered before deducting the deposit. The user will get three
attempts to enter the PIN Code since its last successful presentation; after this the card will be
rejected at all terminals where PIN protection is enabled. The card must be presented to the system
administrator so that its PIN Code may be reset before it can be used again. The deposit amount and
PIN Code protection are set using the Operator Menu Card.
When the user has finished making copies, they should press the ! key. The terminal will display the
message 'DEPOSIT REFUND. Please wait...'. In reality the deposit will not be returned until after the
Hold Time has expired. When the Hold Time has expired, the terminal will display the message
'TRANSACTION OVER', and sound a double beep.
The card must remain in the terminal until the Hold Time has expired, as a late copy may be billed
during this time. If the card is removed after the deposit has been deducted, the terminal will beep and
the user will be prompted to re-insert the card to have the deposit refunded. If the user does not re-
insert the card during the permitted time, the deposit will be lost. In addition to this, if a late copy is
billed after the card has been removed, when the user re-inserts their card they will be informed that a
copy has been taken and that their deposit has been lost. This will dissuade users from trying to
defraud the system.
CARD BRANDING
When a card is presented with System Number and Country Code both equal to 0, the terminal will
brand that card with the following information:

FUNCTION KEYS
"# Select. OK
The " # keys are used to scroll forwards and backwards through the Top Level Menu. To view or
modify a menu item press the OK key. If the item behind the menu option is a single item, the value or
state of the item will appear on the screen. If there is a sub-menu behind a Top Level Menu item, then
the items in the sub-menu may be scrolled and accessed in a similar manner to the Top Level Menu.
In the situation where the sub-menu is a large numeric list, pressing the key will allow direct entry of
the list index to be edited.
Pressing the " # keys will toggle the state of menu items that may be set ON or OFF. All menu
items that require a numeric value should be modified using the numeric keypad, except the date and
time, where the " # keys are used to scroll through the allowed values. To exit the main menu or a
sub-menu, press the ! key.

Set Cash Prices This option gives access to the Prices Sub-menu that provides access to set
the cash prices relative to each input. The prices are described as Price 1
and Price 2 etc. Defaults 5, 10, 15 & 20 respectively.
Set Unit Prices This option gives access to the Prices Sub-menu that provides access to set
the unit prices relative to each input. The prices are described as Price 1 and
Price 2 etc. Defaults 1, 2, 3 & 4 respectively.
Set Cash Deposit This sets the Cash Deposit amount that is deducted for security purposes.
Default = 20
Set Unit Deposit This sets the Unit Deposit amount that is deducted for security purposes.
Default = 4
Price Minimum CR This option allows the minimum credit limits to be set; any card that has a
lower value than this limit will be rejected by the system. Both the Cash and
Unit limits can be set in this menu option.
Discount Enable This enables copies to be made using Discount purses. The setting is
effective for all prices.
Default = OFF.
Set Max Discount This sets the maximum discount rate that may be allowed when making
copies. This value is compared with the discount rate on a User's card. The
actual discount given will be the lesser of the two rates. There is an enable
for each of the four prices lines. Please note that discount only applies to
the Cash Prices.
Default = 10.0 % (for all PLUs)
Subsidy Enable This enables copies to be made using Subsidy purses. The setting is
effective for all Prices lines.
Default = OFF.
Dept. Purse En This enables copies to be made using Departmental purses. The setting is
effective for all prices lines.
Default = OFF.
Tax Enable This enables Tax to be added to the prices depending on card group. The
Tax rates for each group are set up in Set Group Tax. Default = OFF.
Set Hotlist Permits the System Manager to input card serial numbers which are to be
locked out of the terminal, (as a result of fraud etc.). Cards already hotlisted
may also be removed from the hotlist using this option.
Please note that Infineer Chipcards have 8 digit serial numbers.
View Hotlist This option permits the System Manager to view the hotlist to check which
card numbers have been hotlisted.

Group Enable This permits Card User Groups 00 - 999 to be enabled / disabled.
Default for all Groups = ON.
Set Group Tax Allows the user to set up a tax rate for each of the 1000 groups. The default
tax rate for all groups is 0%. The tax rate can be set between 0 and 100% in
0.1% increments. This will only be added to the prices if the Tax Enable
option is ON.
USA Date Format When this option is ON all dates on the screen and on the printer will appear
in the mm/dd/yy format instead of the normal dd/mm/yy when the option is
OFF. The default is OFF, dd/mm/yy.
Set Clock Sets the date, day and time of the internal Real Time Clock (RTC).
Application List This sub-menu permits setting of the Applications List for the terminal. Any
purse on a User Card will only be valid at a terminal where at least one
Application is ON for that purse, and the corresponding Application is ON in
the terminal.
Default for all Applications = OFF
For full details of the Application List please refer to the 9501 Manual.
User Display If this option is set to ON, the User's name and ID will be displayed when a
User Card is inserted.
Default = ON
Language This option allows the prompt language on the terminal to be set. The
current choices available are English, French and Dutch. The language will
default to that on the System Setup Card used to Brand the terminal.
PIN Entry This option allows PIN Code protection to be enabled for each the different
purse types available on Infineer Chipcards.
Default = OFF for all purse types
Anti-Passback If this option is set to ON, the terminal will activate the anti-passback timer
on User cards that have the anti-passback facility enabled. This will prevent
the user from using their card again during the Anti-passback time. The anti-
passback timer will not be activated on any User Card if this variable is set
to OFF.
Default = ON, (anti-passback will be set)
Override Beep If this option is set to ON, the terminal will beep every 10 seconds when in
Override mode.
Default = ON
Auto Overwrite If this option is Off, when the terminals transaction memory fills the terminal
will go out of service. If the option is On, the terminal will start overwriting the
oldest transactions when the transaction memory becomes full.
The default setting is Off.

Set LCD Contrast This menu option is used to adjust the contrast of the LCD display panel.
The value should be adjusted until the information on the screen is clearly
visible. The higher the value, the darker the display becomes.
Accept Standard If this variable is set to Off, Infineer Standard Chipcards will not be accepted
by the terminal. (Default = On, Standard cards accepted.)
Set Hold Time. Card return delay to allow late copies to be billed, as in existing products.
Default 5 sec. This time must be set long enough to allow correct billing of
copies that were in progress when the card return was requested.
Set A3 Time Depending on the Config setting, this either sets the length of time a steered
input is latched, or the maximum time between pulses to be counted. If used
in Steered mode, the time shown is in seconds, if used in Multipulse mode,
the time is in ms.
Copier Config. This variable sets the way the terminal's inputs and outputs react. The
default value of 0 in this variable will leave the unit set to cover the majority
of installations.
Input
The default Config, 0, and up to 9, will set up the 4 price inputs to operate as
4 separate, direct billing inputs.
With Config set between 10 and 19, billing inputs 2 and 3 select the price
line and price 1 takes a copy at the selected price. Input 2 selects price 2,
Input 3 selects price 3, Input 2&3 select price 4. If there is not enough credit
to buy a copy at the selected price, the copier will be disabled and a
message 'INSUFFICIENT FUNDS'. This will be cleared when a lower priced
copy is selected.
With Config set between 20 and 39, billing inputs 2,3 and 4 select the price
line and price 1 takes a copy at the selected price. Input 2 selects price 2,
Input 3 selects price 3, Input 4 selects price 4. If there is not enough credit to
buy a copy at the selected price, the copier will be disabled and a message
'INSUFFICIENT FUNDS'. This will be cleared when a lower priced copy is
selected.
With Config set between 40 and 79, the billing will be carried out from Price
1 input only. This is Multipulse mode. The number of successive pulses with
less than <A3 Time> ms between each pulse are counted and then when
<A3 Time> ms has passed since a pulse, the counter is compared the
values set in the Mulipulse Count option in the technical menu for Size 2,3,4.
If the number of pulses is not equal to the value set for one of the sizes, the
next lowest value is selected. If the number of pulses is less than the value
for Size 2, a Size 1 copy is selected.

With Config set at 80 or more, the Price 2,3,4 inputs will operate as steering
inputs. That is, an input to the Price 2,3,4 line will not be treated as a billing
pulse, but the next pulse to arrive at the normal Price1 input will be treated
as a Price 2,3,4 signal if it arrives within <A3 Time> seconds of the steering
pulse.
Output
The lower order bits of Config set the Output relay operation. The Input
Config values must be added to them to give the overall Config. Table 7
below details the different settings of the Config variable.

Notes:
The MAIN relay always energises when Credit after deduction of Deposit
Minimum Price Value.
The MAIN relay always de-energises when Credit < Minimum Price Value, or
when End of Transaction is requested by pressing a key.

Multipulse Count Sets the number of pulses for Size 2,3 and 4 in Multipulse config (4x). The
default values are 2,3,4.
Purse 1 Maximum Sets the maximum value of purse 1 that will be accepted. (Default 10000)
Purse 2 Maximum Sets the maximum value of purse 2 that will be accepted. (Default 10000)
Network This option allows the user to choose whether the terminal will be attached
to the network or not. While set to ON, the terminal will display MACHINE IS
NOT AVAILABLE until it receives its setup from the host PC.
Machine Number Each Infineer product must have a unique machine number to identify the
source of transactions when retrieving audit information. Changing this value
from anything other than 0 will cause ALL transactions stored within the
terminal to be lost.
Default = 0
System Number Each site must use a unique System No. To ensure that it is not possible for
cards from another site to be used.
Default = 0
Dealer Number Each Dealer under a Country Distributor will have a unique code.
Note: this variable contains a hexadecimal value.
Initialise. By setting Initialise = 7 all data in the RAM of the terminal will be cleared. By
setting Initialise = 14 the data in the transaction memory will be cleared. By
setting Initialise = 21 the data in the RAM of the terminal and the transaction
memory will be cleared.
Extract Trans This function causes the 6550 to dump its entire transaction memory to the
host PC on the network. The PC should be running the Chipnet Extraction
software.
Note: Dealers can access all the necessary machine settings using the
Technical Menu Card. However, the unit must be pre-set to the
required Dealer Number using the site-specific system setup card.

OVERRIDE CARD
The System Manager uses this card.
It is possible to enable the photocopier to make copies without the need for a User Card, i.e. free use.
The Override Card performs this function.
To activate Override Mode, insert the Override Card at the standby prompt. The terminal will display
"Input Code:". At this point the Security Button Sequence should be input (as described below). The
terminal will then enter Override Mode. The terminal will display the total copies made for each price
line in the present override session. Please note that 6550 differs from Infineer magnetic card
systems in this respect. The override audit totals are only held in memory and not on the override card.
To de-activate override mode the security button sequence should be input again. The photocopier
will then shut down after the hold time has expired.
The next time the override card is inserted the totals displayed will be zero. The audit totals in memory
will still be intact, and any subsequent copies will be added to the totals in memory.
Please note that if the power is switched off while the terminal is in Override Mode, the terminal will
return to Override Mode when the power is switched on again.
a) With the " key held down, press and release the # key. If this is done correctly, a '>' will appear
at the right hand side of the display. Do not proceed until the '>'appears.
b)Within 2 seconds of the '>' appearing, press the following keys in this order: 1,7,3,9. The beeper will
sound to indicate a key press.
If the sequence is not carried out correctly or too slowly, the '>' will disappear and it will be necessary
to restart the sequence from a).
CARD ERRORS
If something goes wrong during a card read cycle, this will result in a card error.
Write Errors
If something goes wrong during a card write cycle, this will result in a write error. When a write error
has occurred the terminal will try to correct the problem. If the attempt is unsuccessful, the User will be
informed and asked to contact the Operator to have their card checked.

BATTERY REPLACEMENT
The battery used in the terminal is a Vanadium Pentoxide Lithium Rechargable Battery.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
These batteries are very high-energy systems containing highly active materials and as such
should be treated with respect. However, the cells are designed with a safety vent that will
allow the quiet release of electrolyte under conditions of abuse. To ensure trouble free use of
lithium batteries the following safety considerations should be observed.
TEMPERATURE
These batteries should not be used a temperature in excess of 70 C and for safety reasons never
exposed to temperatures above 100 C.
PHYSICAL ABUSE
Do not open, puncture crush, deform or tamper with the cells as this may release the active electrolyte
and may also expose materials that are potentially flammable.
These cells must not be exposed to excessive heat or naked flames as this will usually cause the cell
to vent and under extreme conditions may result in violent venting.
ENCLOSURE RESTRICTIONS
Lithium cells must never be encapsulated or used in a hermetically sealed enclosure that could inhibit
the operation of the integral safety vent in the side of the cell.
In the unlikely event of a cell rupturing, being punctured or the safety vent opening for whatever
reasons it must be disposed of in a careful manner. Suitable protective clothing should be worn to
protect skin and eyes when handling such cells and if the skin has come into contact with the
electrolyte, it should be washed thoroughly with water.
DISPOSAL
Quantities of up to 5 cells may be disposed of with the normal waste. Large number of cells should be
disposed of in a secured landfill, by arrangement with local authority or by an independent contractor.
Prior to disposal the cells should have their terminals insulated and be sealed in polythene bags. It is
preferable that cells be fully discharged before disposal to below a 2 V open circuit voltage.
