Design and Measurement questions

Look this up on your phone.
1. Despite the high embodied energy of concrete, Sam and Trey decide to have a concrete floor for their
garage. The dimensions of the floor are 21 ft. by 24 ft. by 6 inches thick. What is the price for the
concrete if the cement company quotes them $240 per cubic meter? (2.54 cm = 1 inch)

2. a) Suppose the surface area of a cylinder is 90 cm 2. What is the surface area of a cylinder with
dimensions 250% the size of the original?

b) Suppose a cylindrical pool is created that has a radius of 8 feet and a depth of 5 feet.

i)What is the volume of such a pool?

ii) Suppose that the floor and the walls of the pool are to be tiled. The cost of a 12 x 12 tile is
$8.50. What will be the cost of tiling the pool? (Tiles must be bought in whole units.)

3. A pen for injured wild owls is be fenced on four sides and the top with wire mesh. The area of the
base is to be rectangular between 120 m 2 and 150 m2 and the volume is to be at least 400 m3. Because
of other buildings, no dimension can be more than 20 m.

a) Design, sketch and label a pen that meets the requirements.

b) Suppose the wire fencing for the top and sides comes in rolls 1 m wide and 30 m long, and the rolls
can be cut to length and/or fastened together. Rolls cost $86.99 before tax. If PST is 8% and GST is
5%, find the cost of the wire mesh for your pen.

4. An asteroid has a roughly spherical shape, with a diameter of about 3 km. If, in the far distant future,
the entire surface of the asteroid could be used for gardening, how many hectares would be available? (1
ha = 0.01 km2)
