AITP is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a low platelet

count and mucocutaneous bleeding1). Splenectomy is a major

treatment modality when more conservative medical therapy has
failed. Despite an initial response rate of 7080%, 15% of patients
will develop a recurrent thrombocytopenia. The presence of an
accessory spleen should be sought in this case

Accessory spleens maybe found in a variety of locations, and may

not be readily apparent. Retained accessory splenic tissue can
lead to recurrent ITP, which, this report (involving multiple relapses
in a single patient) demonstrates.
