Worship Life of the Church in Song: Roles of Singing in Worshipful Living

Andy Roby, Music and Worship R&S Chair
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his little book, Life Together (1939), wrote, It is the voice of the church that is heard in
singing together. Bonhoeffer cited a number of passages from both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures to
support his view that the song of a faith community is an indispensable expression of the communitys essence.
Choral musicians who are engaged in leading or sharing in the sung elements of worship are afforded the privi-
lege of participating in that essence on a frequent basis. This interest session will explore the significant roles
of singing in worshipful life, with a little help from Bonhoeffer and Karl Barth, as well as Henry Van Dyke,
Thomas Troegger, and the voice of an African-American Spiritual.
Andy Roby currently serves as the minister of music for First Baptist Church in Shelby, a
position he has held since 2001. In that capacity, he conducts several of the churchs choral
ensembles and gives direction to the overall music and worship life of the congregation. He
also serves as an adjunct professor at Gardner-Webb University, and as co-director of the
NC Baptist Singers, a group of 120 church musicians from across the state. Previously, he
has served as Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities, and Chair of the Depart-
ment of Music at Union University (TN). Earlier choral faculty appointments included
Shorter College (GA) and Asbury College (KY). His choirs have appeared at Avery-Fisher
Hall at New Yorks Lincoln Center, and have successfully completed a number of interna-
tional concert tours.
A long-time member of ACDA, Andys service to the organization has included a stint as editor of the
Southern Division Newsletter and currently includes North Carolinas Chair for the Music in Worship R&S
Area. In the latter capacity, he has facilitated significant events associated with our fall conferences. Andy
received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he
studied conducting and choral techniques with Milburn Price and John Dickson.

Building Sound Unity

Welborn Young, NC ACDA Past President
Choral Directors have an antagonist relationship with the very language that historically has
been used to describe sound unity, i.e. Blend, Balance, Vowel Unification and Vibrato. This
interest session challenges and reimagines traditional approaches to unifying your choirs
Welborn E. Young is Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at UNC
Greensboro where he was the recipient of the 2007 Outstanding Teacher of the Year award.
Currently, he directs the University Chamber Singers and teaches graduate conducting and
seminars. In 2005 Dr. Young was named Artistic Director and Conductor of Bel Canto
Company, an ensemble of professional singers, having formerly having conducted the Choral
Society of Greensboro. He has been a featured festival conductor at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Nether-
lands, at the York Minster International Choral Festival in Great Britain, and at Carnegie Hall. He has served as
a guest conductor and clinician in festivals and clinics in multiple states. His choirs have toured extensively.
Young has presented papers and lead interest sessions at national and international conferences on numerous
topics, and has prepared ensembles for several notable conductors. He established and administers the NCMEA
High School and Middle School Honors Chorus Clinics at UNCG preparing young students for their auditions
for Honors Chorus. Young holds the DMA in Choral Conducting from the University of Illinois Urbana-
Champaign and Master's and Bachelor's degrees from Middle Tennessee State University.

In a world of political, economic, and personal disintegration,

Music is not a luxury but a necessity; Not simply because it is therapeutic,
nor because it is the Universal Language, But because it is the persistent
