Introduction

This booklet has some simple ideas of games

you can play with your children at home.

You can use your magnetic letters, or make

letters on paper or card.

In school we teach children to read and write

almost every word using only the small
letters. We only use capital letters for the
start of names and sentences.

Near the start of the year, mainly play with

the letters we have been teaching in school.
As we teach new letters you can add them
into your games.

Try to say the sounds cleanly, without the uh
at the end, so no puh, nuh, or suh in these
games!

Find Me, Find Me

Lay out the letters theyve been learning,

making sure theyre all the right way up.

Say Find me, find me .... and then say a

letter sound.

Your child will have to look for the letter,

trying to match it to the sound you made.

Speed Sounds

Lay out the letters theyve been learning,

making sure theyre all the right way up.

Try to make them into little lines.

Say can you tell me what all the letter

sounds are as fast as you can? Ready, steady,
go!

Point to each letter one at a time,

encouraging your child to say each letter
sound as you point to them.

Quickwrite, level 1

Lay out the letters theyve been learning,

making sure theyre all the right way up.

Group them together leaving a space near

your child for them to move letters into.

Similar to find me, find me, children have

to find the letter sound you say. They move it
into the space in front of them when theyve
found it.

You can also play this game writing on paper

or a whiteboard.

Quickwrite, level 2

Set up just like in Quickwrite level 1.

Say a short simple word that uses letters

your child knows (some examples are at the
end of this booklet.) Tell your child how many
sounds there are in the word.

Your child has to try to find all the letters

needed to write the word.

You can also play this game writing on paper

or a whiteboard.

Quickwrite, level 3

Set up just like in Quickwrite level 1.

Say a short simple word that uses letters

your child knows (some examples are at the
end of this booklet.)

Dont tell your child how many sounds are in

the word. They may not find all the sounds in
this level of Quickwrite, but if they can find
the first one thats an excellent start.

Your child has to try to find all the letters

needed to write the word.

Kims Game or Whats Missing?

Choose 4 or 5 letters. Talk about them and

make sure your child knows what each letter
is.

Get them to close their eyes no peeking!

Hide a letter, and ask them to look and see if

they can tell which letter is missing.

Blending Game

Choose letters that your child knows, and use

them to write words for your child to read.
At the end of this booklet there are some
suggestions.

Ask your child to sound out the word (to say

the sound each letter makes.)

Then they repeat the sounds over and over

until they can hear the word.

Full Circle

This game is similar to the Blending Game.

When your child has read the first word,
then you change one letter to make a
different word. You keep doing this until you
get back to the first word.
