Section 1- Introduction

Thesis: A mission and vision statement will prove beneficial to the school, and would

detail the intentions and strategies applicable to the institution. It will provide vital information

on what the goals of the school are, and its current activities. Saint Francis de Sales Schools is a

Christian school catering to a large population in Bristol, Britain. Even though it has been

successful in the community, characterized by excellence among its student, the school is facing

competition from a new Christian school that has been established in the town. The new school is

not very religious in comparison to Saint Francis de Sales Schools, and this is a reason why it has

been popular and enjoying increasing enrollment numbers[ CITATION Kla12 \l 1033 ]. The

mission and vision statements will allow Saint Francis de Sales Schools to deal with the current

challenges.

Section 2- Pre-Coaching Plan

The principles that can apply to coming up with a meaningful, quality vision and mission

statement involve consideration of various variables. These variables will establish the goal of

the vision and mission statement.

Criteria for mission statement

The criteria for coming up with a mission statement will involve answering five

questions. The first question will seek to establish what the school does. It entails the activities is

the school that seeks to satisfy the needs of students and parents. This involves focusing on the

satisfaction of needs instead of a service or program[ CITATION Cha11 \l 1033 ]. The second

criterion looks at the core competencies of the organization. The mission statement depends on a
LED560 MOD1 CASE1-THE STRATEGIC COMPASS 3

superior and competitive internal strength. This is an ability only inherent in the organization,

and is a unique capability.

The third criterion looks at what inspires and motivates the organizations stakeholders to

be committed. The mission statement should be motivating, and would encourage the

stakeholders to feel that their input is beneficial and has a positive impact on the students lives.

The fourth criterion is that the mission statement should be easy to understand and

clear[ CITATION Bra12 \l 1033 ]. The mission should be simple to make it easier to brief people

why the particular organization exists[ CITATION Aza11 \l 1033 ]. Additionally, it provides all

members of the organization or school a simple focus in regards to what occurs in the

organization. Finally, the mission statement should be realistic. The mission statement should not

be too broad or narrow. This will mean that it covers all aspects of the school.

Criteria for vision statement

The vision statement has five essential criteria that have to be put into consideration when

formulating it. The first criterion is being audacious. It means that the vision statement consists

of a dream that is beyond what is through as possible. It is a strategy that the organization strives

to achieve. The second criterion is future casting. Essentially, this provides a picture of how the

school will look like in future. This is what the organizational will evolve into. The third criterion

is that it should be inspiring[ CITATION Cad11 \l 1033 ]. The vision statement is formulated in

an engaging language

The vision statement is also purpose-driven. This gives the members of the organization a

sense of purpose, and they will see themselves as building a larger institution that is better than
LED560 MOD1 CASE1-THE STRATEGIC COMPASS 4

the current one. Finally, it takes advantage of the organizations core competencies. It means that

it builds on what the organization has already established[ CITATION Aza11 \l 1033 ]. It

includes various variable such as unique capabilities, history, client base, and resources.

Section 3- Facts of the Coaching Session

Vision and mission statements for the Saint Francis de Sales Schools.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to preserve the benefits and values of a holistic Christian

education for present and future generations through provision of quality education. We support

the different Christian values of the Catholic community and stakeholders in Bristol and the

students will gain from the schools motto of true Christian spirit.

Vision statement: A provider of quality education and extra-curricular activities to guarantee a

wholesome development of the Christian child.

Section 4- Successes & Challenges

Justification of mission and vision statements

The mission simply details the reason why the school is doing what it is doing. On the

other hand, the vision describes its long-term goal. This essential component holds the

organization together. Moreover, it acts as a strategic foundation in establishing a strategy for the

organization. All personnel in the organization are expected to follow the mission

statement[ CITATION Aza11 \l 1033 ]. The mission statement can be changed with time but the

intention of the organization will remain the same. The mission statement is also a guide to the

day-to-day operations of the organization. It also guides the decisions made by the organization
LED560 MOD1 CASE1-THE STRATEGIC COMPASS 5

in the future. It will prove beneficial for the organization, all stakeholders, and clients.

Essentially, it is a solid foundation to the success of the organization. It also explains why the

organization exists, and what the organization is[ CITATION Cha11 \l 1033 ]. It is short, and

easily to understand on what the mission of the organization pertains.

The vision statement is a reflection of the current issue that the company is trying to

handle. This is like a picture of what the school intends to achieve in future, and will comprise of

where the school is headed. The vision statement is justifiable as it will encourage the evolution

of productive students, and the introduction of extra-curriculum activities that will prove

beneficial in attracting new students and ensuring the current students will gain from the school.

It will also be linked to the goal of expanding the school, and ensuring that it concurs with

current technological trends in education. The vision statement provides a mental picture of what

the school will be like in future. This is a strategic vision that acts as a long-term direction for the

school. It delineates the activities of the school to be followed. It also details the capabilities the

school wants to develop. This can aid in helping the school come up with an idea of purposeful

action. Every stakeholder in the organization can follow a unifying focal point. The vision

statement may not incorporate all the information that is required, but will provide a basis for

achieving specific goals[ CITATION Cha11 \l 1033 ]. The vision statement also capitalizes on

the core competencies of the organization. In this regard, the school is already an established

institution. It can use this advantaged to ensure the success of the school. It also inspires the

personnel to work hard towards the success of the institution. This is entail in the achievement of

organizational goals.

Section 5- Lessons I Learned

LED560 MOD1 CASE1-THE STRATEGIC COMPASS 6

Rationale for adopting mission and vision statement

John handover should follow my version of the mission and vision statement as it would

prove beneficial to the school. The school is facing many challenges ranging from increasing

competition, lack of financial support and a reduction in student numbers. The stakeholders and

community are also losing their trust in the school, and this has been a major setback in the

progress of the school[ CITATION Bra12 \l 1033 ]. I believe Handover should adopt the mission

and vision statement as it would lead to an increase in investor confidence. Currently, the

investors and stakeholders are suspicious of supporting the school, as it is not productive like in

the past[ CITATION Kla12 \l 1033 ]. This would mean that it is at risk of closure making it an

unwanted investment. The mission statement would encourage the stakeholders that the school

has changed tact and is following a new path. The new leadership and mission statement would

go hand-in-hand in encouraging the stakeholders of the new path that the school intends to

follow.

The organization should follow the mission and vision statement as it allows Handover to

focus on what is important. Meetings already carried out in the past have discussed the

importance of expanding the school. This is through a new building project. This will allow the

school to introduce new activities in the school, and increase the number of students. The school

is losing students to a competing school that is new. Expansion would prove beneficial in

attracting and retaining learners. The school is the most religious educational institution in the

community. It can leverage on its strength to ensure that it achieve its goals[ CITATION Kla12 \l

1033 ].

Saint Francis de Sales Schools is facing issues with financial support, especially among
LED560 MOD1 CASE1-THE STRATEGIC COMPASS 7

stakeholders who are losing their trust in the school. The mission and vision statement will

encourage more stakeholders to invest in the school. After all, the school has been successful in

the past, and can prove beneficial in the future. The vision and mission statement will establish

the strategic goals of the organization. The school intends to be competitive in future.

Encouraging all stakeholders, especially the human resources will be a key part of the

process[ CITATION Kla12 \l 1033 ]. The mission and vision statement will provide a way to

appreciate and empower the human resources such as staff and volunteers.

The vision statement seeks to improve the quality of the school. This is both in terms of

physical resources and facilitates. This will guarantee that the school will improve its quality of

teaching, and introduce new subjects that have been of benefit to competitor school. For

instance, the competing school has more co-curriculum activities that allow learners to be

engaged in more activities. Moreover, Saint Francis de Sales Schools will be able to adopt to the

new changes in education. It includes curriculum reforms and technological developments. Tis

will allow the school to play a significant role in teaching students in the Bristol

community[ CITATION Kla12 \l 1033 ]. Furthermore, it has been in the community for over 100

years, and it is considered as an important private catholic school.

Section 6- Improvement Areas

In conclusion, the mission and vision statements are integral aspects of the success of the

organization. They allow the organization and its stakeholders to focus on the future, and their

roles in the organizing. Saint Francis de Sales Schools is undergoing many challenges, and the

vision and mission statements will prove beneficial for its success. Handover should apply my

version of vision and mission statements to deal with the current challenges facing the school. It
LED560 MOD1 CASE1-THE STRATEGIC COMPASS 8

can act as a strategy in their resolution, and in the achievement of the success of the school.
