PROCEDURE FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF FAULTY BEARINGS

ON THE FEED PUMP

The procedure for the replacement of the bearings on the feed pump include but not limited to
the following steps:
1. Disassembling the pump.
2. Reassembling the pump.
DISASSEMBLY
The following steps should be followed when disassembling the pump:
Isolation of the suction module from electrical power source.
Isolation of the lines from external flow by closing the respective valves to the pump.
Removal of the v-belt cover plate using appropriate spanner.
Reducing the v-belt tension by lowering the prime mover (electric motor) using
appropriate spanner.
Removal of the v-belt from the pulley when tension is reduced adequately.
Removal of the pump pulley using the correct allen key and pulley extractor.
Unbolting the pulley system back plate and secure it for accessibility.
Disconnect the flush water system hoses using appropriate spanner and securing them.
Disconnect the pump from the pump casing.
Loosening the pump foundation bolts.
Extraction of the pump from the pump casing using extraction bolts.
Gradual and careful removal of the pump from the mounting using chain block.
Transportation of pump to MPN mechanical workshop.
Disassemble the pump components taking into cognizance of the former position. Component
parts such as:
Removal of the pump impeller by rotating it anti clockwise while holding down the
shaft.
Removal of the pump back plate using appropriate spanner.
Lock the mechanical seal with spacers (4pcs of spacers).
Removal of the mechanical seal by carefully sliding it off the shaft.
Unbolt the two clamps holding down the bearing drum to the pump frame.
Careful removal of the bearing drum from the pump frame and place it on work bench.
Support the bearing drum to prevent it from rolling over.
Unbolt the bearing cover on both sides of the drum.
Extract the shaft with the bearing from the drum.
Completely clean the grease on the bearings and shaft.
Extract both bearings from the shaft using hydraulic press.
Clean the shaft properly to remove all forms of dirt on it.
REASSEMBLY
The following steps should be taken when reassembling the pump.
Inspect the new bearings for replacement for any form of deformity.
Place first bearing in a bearing heater and heat up to temperature of 70oC-80oC.
Place and hold shaft vertically.
Slide the heated bearing unto the shaft to the correct position.
Allow to cool off at ambient temperature.
Turn shaft and repeat step 2-5 above for the second bearing.
Grease the bearings adequately.
Slide the shaft and bearings into the drum.
Replace the bearing covers and bolt down using appropriate spanner.
Mount the assembled unit on the pump frame.
Carefully slide the mechanical seal unto the shaft and observe the sleeve position.
Secure the mechanical seal on the shaft.
Bolt down the clamps holding the bearing drum/shaft to the pump frame.
Insert the back plate on the pump frame and bolt down.
Secure the impeller properly on the screw end of the shaft by turning it in clockwise
direction.
Use dial gauge to check the axial and radial run out of the shaft. Adjust appropriately
using shims where necessary.
Use vernier caliper to check the clearance of the impeller against the back plate and
maintain adequate clearance.
Carefully mount the assembled pump into the already secured casing on the suction pipe
using chain block. Gradually secure pump in position using bolts and nuts. Tightening to
be done diagonally on all the bolts. Roll the pump shaft intermittently while securing the
bolts; Use the adjustment bolt on the bearing drum to create pump clearance if
necessary.
Check pump alignment using level gauge; adjust as appropriate using shims to maintain
proper alignment of pump to the foundation.
Tighten the pump foundation bolts with appropriate spanners.
+
Secure the pulley system back plate into position.
Mount the pump pulley on the shaft and tighten using Allen key.
Secure the v-belt on the pump and motor pulley.
Tension the v-belt to the required tension by gradually raising the electric motor.
Check the motor pulley level against pump pulley level using a level gauge adjust as
required.
Check the leveling of the motor platform.
Secure the v-belt cover plate.
Unscrew the spacers on the mechanical seal.
Connect the flush water hoses to the mechanical seal.
Bleed and pressure test the mechanical seal using the cooler header tank.
