VOCABULARY PHRASE USAGE

mitn ("any," "anyt hing," "not hing")

Just like the word yhtn that we saw in the previous lesson, mitn is a word that
quantifies something and appears in negative sentences and questions. There is an
important difference, however. Yhtn refers to the amount of a specific thing
mentioned, whereas mitn modifies a class. You can think of mitn as meaning

FI NNI S HPOD101.COM ABS OLUT E BEGI NNER S 1 #20 - DO YOU HAVE ANY FI NNI S H DOGS ? 3
"any kind of." So, by asking Onko sinulla mitn elimi? Emmi is not only asking
about if Helen has any animals, but also what kinds of animals she has, if any. When
asking about brothers and sisters in the previous lesson, however, she used
yhtn, because people usually do not have different kinds of brothers or sisters,
so it would sound odd to use mitn in that context.

todella (really, t ruly)

Todella is an adverb that adds emphasis. It was originally the adessive form of the
word tosi which means "truth."

GRAMMAR

T he Focus of t his Lesson is t he Part it ive Plural Form

Isoisll on koiria.
"My grandf at her has dogs."

In the previous lesson, we learned the nominative plural form that ends in -t. As
you may have guessed, all other cases have plural variants as well. But the good
news is that you do not need to learn a full set of new endings for the plurals,
because apart from the nominative, the other cases basically retain the same
endings as in the singular. You just add a little something before them to mark the
form as plural.

The plural marker is -i-, although it sometimes changes into -j- between vowels.
Also, sometimes the preceding vowel changes or disappears, but do not worry
about that now.

Indigenous Dogs in Finland

There are a few indigenous dog breeds in Finland. They were all originally used
either for hunting or for herding reindeer. Three of them are still among the top ten
most popular breeds in Finland: the Finnish spitz (suomenpystykorva), the Finnish
hound (suomenajokoira), and the Finnish Lapphund (suomenlapinkoira). The Finnish
spitz is the national dog of Finland. It is a smallish, golden-red dog. The Finnish
hound is a bit like a foxhound. The Finnish spitz and the Finnish hound are hunting
dogs. The Finnish Lapphund is a smallish dog of the spitz type. The color varies
quite a lot, many are mostly black with light brown and white markings, while some
are entirely light brown. The Finnish Lapphund has been used for herding reindeer
in Lapland.
