Y7 and Y8 DT day
The Y7 and Y8 children had a day off timetable on Tuesday, when they spent the day working
through Design and Technology problems.
Mr Mockridge spoke to them about his work as an engineer at Dyson. Talking to the children about
his pathway into work; from collecting screws to looking at how things work and are put together to
now working with a multi-faceted design team on the latest Dyson technology of hairdryers, fans
and turbo engines. He spoke about the need for resilience and acceptance that not all projects will
work, but that failures are not disasters, but should be tools for learning. He reminded the children
that collaboration on a project is not just something that happens in school, but that as part of a
design team, he needed to share his ideas, listen to the views of others and work with people who
he didnt always get along with!
The children took part in small projects taking apart and reassembling a cleaner head and using
spaghetti and marshmallows to build stable and secure structures. They then took on their main
project for the day - The Squashed Tomato Challenge. This was based around the non-fictional
problem of transporting tomatoes from the fertile soil at the top of mountains in Nepal where they
are grown, to the markets at the bottom. The tomatoes need to be taken carefully without being
damaged to enable the communities to sell their goods and earn a wage.
The variety of designs to solve the problem was interesting; pulley systems, chutes for rolling the
tomatoes down, baskets to collect and carry them in were all made and tested. Some designs
needed modification and adjustment, but by the end of the afternoon, each group had achieved a
solution to the problem.
A fabulous day allowing the children to experience the practical and life-skill elements of Design
and Technology and an excellent opportunity for us to see who can excel in these areas.
Thanks to Mr Mockridge for sharing his expertise with us and to Mrs Mockridge and Mrs Beach for
organising such a great day.

YEAR 4 AZTEC FEAST
Thank you to all of the Year 4 Parents who kindly donated traditional food for our Aztec feast. Our
little Aztecs had a wonderful time. All of them tried most of the goodies on offer, many bravely trying
things for the first time. Everyone enjoyed the traditional sacrifices at our celebration and we are all
happy to report that the sun will now continue to rise and the world will not end!
