Dear German Students and Parents:

The Shakopee High School German program is excited to announce participation in the 2017 American
Association of Teacher of German (AATG) National German Exam. The National German Exam is administered
each year to over 26,500 high school students of German. The exam, now in its 57th year, provides diagnostic
feedback, rewards students through an extensive regional and national prize program and creates a sense of
accomplishment. Students that score in the 90th percentile on the exam can apply for AATG Study Trip awards
(four-week study trips to Germany). The very highest performing students in Minnesota, along with thier families,
will be invited to The University of St. Thomas for a special recognition and awards banquet. This test, although
voluntary, can be an excellent addition to future applications and resumes.

The National German Exam will be administered in class on January 26th and January 27th. The Exam is
delivered in in an electronic format and has four levels, each with the same structure and content. There is a
listening component to this exam and and students will be expected to bring their own headphones to use for the
exam. Extras may be available for students who do not have any or forget them. Please make arrangements for
this. For more information about the Exam visit: http://www.aatg.org/default.asp?page=NGE

On November 17 & 18th, all German students in levels 2-4 will take a practice exam to gauge where their
language acquisition is currently at. At the conclusion of this practice exam, students receive a National German
Exam practice score. This indicator will help students make an informed decision about whether or not to
register for the National German Exam. Additional practice materials are available upon request. Students who
currently have an IEP or 504 plan, and receive testing accommodations, will have the opportunity to apply for
accommodations on the National German Exam as well. Please register for the exam by completing and
returning the bottom portion of this sheet along with the $6 registration fee by November 22.

I look forward to offering this opportunity to our Shakopee High School German students. Please let me know if
you have questions.

Sincerely,
Amy Engler
