Specific Gravity, Density and Unit Weight of Tap Water

INTRODUCTION:

The experiment is about measuring of fluid property like density, specific weight and
specific gravity of a tap water.

Fluid is a substance that has no fixed shape and yield easily to external pressure may
either be gas or liquid.

The Density is the volumetric mass density of a substance measure by its mass per unit
volume.

The Specific Weight is the weight per unit volume of material.

The Specific Gravity is the ratio of the density of substance to the density of a reference
substance.

OBEJECTIVE:

To determine the density, specific weight and specific gravity of a tap water.

MATERIAL:

1000 mL graduated cylinder

Thermometer/Hydrometer

Weighting scale

Water

METHOD:

1. Fill the 1000 mL graduated cylinder with water

2. After filling the graduated cylinder weight it to get its mass using weighting scale
3. Use the thermometer for temperature
4. Repeat for three trials
RESULT:

TRIAL Mass (M) Volume (V) Density ( ) Specific Weight

( )
1
Cylinder 348.5 g 0.0005 m^3 996.2 kg/m^2 9772.72 N/m^3
Water 498.1 g or

2
Cylinder 348.5 g 0.0005 m^3 997.00 kg/m^2 9780.57 N/m^3
Water 498.5 g or
.4985kg
3
Cylinder 348.5 g 0.0005 m^3 998.2 kg/m^2 9792.34 N/m^3
Water 499.1 g

Total 9781.876 N/m^3

Computations:

In order to get the volume of the water, we converted the 500ml graduated cylinder to
cubic meter

500mL = 0.0005m3

DISCUSSION:

At first, we get the weight of the graduated cylinder in the weighing scale in order to get its mass,
then after that we put water in it in order to measure the value of volume of water. We do it for three trials
and after that, we are able to calculate the values of Density, Unit Weight and Specific Gravity

CONCLUSION:

After doing this experiment, we concluded that in order to calculate the exact value of mass and
volume, you must determine the value of Graduated Cylinder without water inside in order to get its mass
and after that when you measure it with water inside of it, the value of it minus its the mass of the
graduated cylinder will calculate the value of water.
