Chapter 1
Functional Description
Enhanced UE DRX Technique Principle
3GPP R8 introduces enhanced UE DRX which is HS-DSCH discontinuous receiving in
CELL_FACH state.
In CELL_FACH state, DRX operation in CELL_FACH is not configured, UE continuously
receives HS-SCCH. UTRAN can active UE DRX through the following methods:
Transferring UE to CELL/URA_PCH state through dedicated RRC reconfiguration;
Configuring DRX Cycle in CELL_FACH state.
The parameters of HS-DSCH continuous receiving in CELL_FACH are listed in the table
shown below.
The parameters of HS-DSCH continuous receiving in CELL_FACH

Enhanced UE DRX Key Technologies

This feature mainly affects at UE side.
UE variable HS_DSCH_DRX_CELL_FACH_STATUS decides whether UE uses
CELL_FACH HS-DSCH DRX operation that will be effective when the value of
HS_DSCH_DRX_CELL_FACH_STATUS is true.
If HS_DSCH_DRX_CELL_FACH_STATUS is true, the following conditions should be
fulfilled:
UE category supports DRX of enhanced CELL_FACH
UE is in CELL_FACH state
UE has dedicated H-RNTI
HS-DSCH DRX in CELL_FACH information (SIB5 or 5bis)
DRX interruption by HS-DSCH data is true or Common E-DCH system info can be
obtained.
When the switch of Enhanced CELL_FACH DRX is open, HS-DSCH DRX in CELL_FACH
information is transmitted.
Entering CELL_FACH HS-DSCH DRX operation, the steps are:
E-DCH stars transmitting when E-DCH resources index info is received, and the downlink
needs to receive HS-DSCH. According to the figure shown in below, after E-DCH resources
allocated, if E-DCH resources index info is received within inactivity time, the timer inactivity
time is stopped and receives HS-DSCH.
At the end of E-DCH resource allocated, if IE "DRX Interruption by HS-DSCH data" (SIB5
or 5bis) is TRUE and UE has no received information on HS-DSCH or E-DCH resource
assigned, the timer inactivity timer will be started or restarted at the last sub-frame of
HS-SCCH.
When UE is configured the parameter listed in above table and one dedicated H-RNTI,
UE probably enter HS-DSCH discontinuous receiving in CELL_FACH state. The principle
figure is shown in the following. The timer inactivity timer starts timing when there is
no E-DCH resource configuration which is received during timing procedure, the timing
is stopped. During the timing procedure, the data still can be received. If the expiry of
timing is arrived, UE can select receiving data within the time of HS-DSCH Rx burstFACH of
the cycle HS-DSCH DRX cycleFACH. If there is data transmitting, discontinuous receiving
should be stopped and start the continuous receiving of HS-DSCH.

HS-DSCH discontinuous receiving in CELL_FACH state

DRX cycle and SFN are synchronized. UE receives HS-DSCH data when the following
equation is fulfilled:

Chapter 1 Functional Description

(SFN H-RNTI) mod DRX_cycle < Rx_burst

Where, H-RNTI is the variable H_RNTI, DRX_cycle is "HS-DSCH DRX cycleFACH", Rx
burst is "HS-DSCH Rx burstFACH".
When E-FACH DRX state is used, UE will complete:
1. If E-DCH resource allocated is finished or HS-DSCH completes receiving;
2. Starting timer inactivity timer to estimate whether it is overtime;
3. Having received HS-DSCH information before overtime and starting timer inactivity
timer;
4. Entering discontinuous receiving when inactivity timer is overtime.

Detecting HS-DSCH on Rx burst length (i.e. RxBurstLength in below) of DRX cycle

length (i.e. DrxCycleLength in below);
5. Not detecting HS-DSCH and continue the discontinuous receiving;
6. Detecting HS-DSCH, starting to receive HS-DSCH and leaving discontinuous
receiving state. Holding on E-FACH state. Following the transferring strategy from
FACH to HS to estimate whether entering CELL_DCH state.
7. Not completing and continue to receive HS-DSCH.

To support Enhanced UE DRX function, the following parameters are introduced

DrxOnFachIndThis Parameter Presents Whether E-FACH DRX is Supported in Cell.
T321Inactivity Time of E-DCH TransmissionUE Should Go Into E-FACH DRX State
when times out.
DrxCycleLengthOn the State Of E-FACH DRX, This Parameter Indicates Cycle Length
of Discontinue Receiving of HS-DSCH.

RxBurstLength On the State of E-FACH DRX, This Parameter Indicates Several

Frames Using for HS-DSCH Detection in the Cycle Length of Discontinue Receiving of
HS-DSCH.
UeDrxInd The Parameter Indicates Whether DRX Operation Can Be Used By All
E_FACH Users. The value0means only UL E_FACH UE Could Use Enhanced DRX,
And The Value 1 Means All E_FACH UE Could Use Enhanced DRX.
