Lesson Plan Title: Finally! Chapter One of Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli
General Goals:
4. Students will be able to summarize material read and make a prediction about the events of the
next chapter.
Specific Objectives: Students will read chapter one of our current novel, Third Grade Angels,
and be able to respond to questions with evidence from the text. Students will also be able to
Required Materials:
Pencil
Worksheet
Anticipatory Set: As a class, we will go over the goals for the days lesson. Then after
discussion, the students will silently read chapter one before continuing the lesson.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Students will participate in a quick class discussion of the lessons goal posted on the smart
board.
2. Then students will silently read chapter one with a goal of comprehension.
3. Once everyone has read the chapter we will have a class discussion about the details of the
chapter. This part of the power point will cover the four vocabulary words of the chapter, the five
WH questions including setting, main characters, and what the chapter was about. For this part of
the lesson we will be using the power point on the smart board to engage in a class discussion.
Students will be evaluated on retention of the materials read and class participation.
4. We will then go over the worksheet and its requirements, focusing specifically on the
assessment part of the worksheet, questions 6-9 that there will be a specific rubric for. This
screen will remain on the screen while students complete the worksheet to remind them of the
requirements.
5. When students are finished they will turn the worksheet in and either read quietly or work on
6. Once everyone is done with the worksheet, we will have a discussion about the chapter,
answer any questions, and go over some of the students predictions for the next chapter before
Plan for Independent Practice: Students will independently complete a worksheet. The first
question on the worksheet will ask the students to summarize the chapter weve just read.
Questions two through five will be matching the vocabulary to the definition. The next section of
the worksheet, questions six through nine, will ask students to answer the comprehension
questions with details from the text. The final section of the worksheet will have students make a
prediction for the next chapter. As the students work, I will be walking around monitoring
progress and answering any questions that the students might have. The slide outlining the
requirements for the worksheet will remain on the smart board while the students work on the
assignment.
Modification for Student(s) with Special Needs: I have a student with Autism in my class who
has a difficult time on writing assignments because of his developmental delays. For him, I will
require one to two sentences for the summarization and prediction responses. He will have no
modification for the vocabulary. I will also modify the assessment questions for this student,
instead of three sentences, I will take one sentence with the page number he found his answer on.
He has been practicing this in the resource classroom and I have seen him exceed with this
method. I have another student who is has dyslexia and needs the questions to be read to him.
For this assignment, he will sit at the back table that way I can read the questions aloud to him
without disrupting his peers. This will be his only modification. I also have a student with who
forgot their glasses today, so I will seat this student in the front of the classroom so that she can
see the board and the requirements for the assessment questions.
Closure: To close the lesson, we will finish our class discussion about the worksheet and
predictions for the next chapter. I will have a few students share their predictions and I will
answer any questions the students might have had about the lesson.
Worksheet 1. These questions will ask students to refer back to the text to find the answer and
Possible Connections to Other Subjects: This lesson connects to writing through the chapter
summary and prediction, both require a paragraph response and students should be working on
using proper grammar and punctuation throughout the assignment. The comprehension questions
will also ask students to write three full sentences for each response.
