Sixteen dead in Mississippi
in worst Marine crash since 2005
ITTA BENA, Miss. Investigators picked through debris
across a fire-blackened soybean field Tuesday to try to deter-
mine why a U.S. military plane slammed into the ground,
killing all 16 people aboard in the deadliest Marine crash
anywhere in the world in more than a decade.
The KC-130 air tanker was carrying members of an elite
Marine special operations unit cross-country for training in
Arizona when it went down Monday afternoon in the
Mississippi Delta, the military said. The fiery crash scat-
tered wreckage for miles around and sent a pillar of black
smoke rising over the countryside.
Witnesses said they heard low, rumbling explosions
when the plane was still high in the sky, saw the aircraft
spiraling toward the flat, green landscape and spotted an
apparently empty parachute floating toward the earth.
Fifteen Marines and a Navy sailor were killed. Their iden-
tities were not immediately released.
The crash happened outside the small town of Itta Bena,
about 85 miles (135 kilometers) north of the state capital
of Jackson. Bodies were found more than a mile from the
plane.
It was the deadliest Marine Corps air disaster since 2005,
when a transport helicopter went down during a sandstorm
in Iraq, killing 30 Marines and a sailor.

Clam tomato, bacon stew with grilled garlic bread

By Sara Moulton
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Cooked hard-shell clams are an unbeat-

able two-for-the price-of-one delight. You
get the clams themselves and the clam liq-
uid they give off as they cook, which cre-
ates an instant sauce with astonishing
depth of flavor. And its simple. You just
combine the clams with some liquid (and
aromatics, if you want here Ive added
scallions, garlic and tomatoes), cover
them and let them steam until the shells
open.
The only tricky part is that all clams
dont cook at the same pace. The first spec-
imen might open after just 5 minutes while
the last one luxuriates for three times as
long. If you allow that first clam to hang
out until the last clam opens, itll end up
rubbery. Accordingly, it takes a tough
cook to make a tender clam. Check the

Museum finds cases of

two-century-old wine
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

UNION, N.J. A restoration project at a New Jersey

museum unearthed cases of wine nearly as old as the United
States.
The Liberty Hall Museum in Union says it discovered
almost three full cases of Madeira wine, a fortified wine,
dating to 1796 while restoring its wine cellar. NJ.com
reports the museum also found 42 demijohns large glass
jugs sometimes used for holding spirits dating to the
1820s.
The museum said the monetary value of the wine cannot
be made public.
The original 13 colonies imported about 95 percent of
the wine produced on the Portuguese archipelago of
Madeira, according to historical accounts. Bill Schroh,
Liberty Halls director of operations, said Madeira was the
