Total time
1. Research how to perform engine cooling system tests for leaks, protection level, contamination, coolant
level, coolant type, temperature, and conditioner concentration and list your findings below.
a. Engine cooling system leak tests:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
A pressure gauge can be hooked up to the radiator and the system can be put under pressure to
_________________________________________________________________________________________
test the cooling system for any leaks throughout the lines and heater core unit.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________

b. Protection level:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
The protection level is the system protection for cold weather is the strength of the coolant used. A
_________________________________________________________________________________________
refractometer can be used to check coolant strength and make sure the protection level will be
_________________________________________________________________________________________
correct for running the truck in colder climates and freeze protection.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________

c. Contamination:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Contamination can occur when the wrong type of coolant is mixed with other forms of coolant
_________________________________________________________________________________________
causing an acid to build up within the cooling system. The system will need to be completely flushed
_________________________________________________________________________________________
and the correct fluid added.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________

d. Coolant level:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
The coolant level needs to be watched to make sure running it is between the hot low level and hot
_________________________________________________________________________________________
full level. With the engine off and the temperature down the low and high range should be checked
_________________________________________________________________________________________
to make sure it isn't below minimum. If this is low you need to test for a leak.

_________________________________________________________________________________________

e. Coolant type:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
The coolant type can either be polypropelene glycol or ethylene glycol mixture. Their is normal
_________________________________________________________________________________________
coolant and extended life coolant that can extend service intervals.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________

f. Temperature:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Their is a temperature that the thermostat within the engine should open to let coolant flow to the
_________________________________________________________________________________________
radiator and help to exchange the heat to prevent overheating of the engine. The mixture has to be
_________________________________________________________________________________________
the proper strength in order to give the proper freeze and boil over protection from different climates
_________________________________________________________________________________________
the truck is running in.

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning

g. Conditioner concentration:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
The concentration should be close to a 50% distilled water and 50 % coolant concentration for
_________________________________________________________________________________________
proper operation of boil over and freeze protection. Too high of a coolant concentration can cause
_________________________________________________________________________________________
performance problems and running straight water will cause freezing issues and rust formation.

2. Have your supervisor/instructor verify your research.

Supervisor/instructors initials: _____________

3. Ask your supervisor/instructor for a vehicle or simulator to check.

4. Examine the vehicle/simulator, and perform engine cooling system tests for leaks, protection level,
contamination, coolant level, coolant type, temperature, and conditioner concentration.

5. List the issues and faults found:

No ______________________________________________________________________________________________
issues were found in this cooling system. The coolant level is at the proper cold level between high
and______________________________________________________________________________________________
low level. The coolant level strength was tested and is in the normal range. No leaks were found.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________

6. Write a short description of the purpose and operation of the suspected component(s):
______________________________________________________________________________________________
If a leak was found after pressure testing it could be externally with a hose or internally such as a heater
______________________________________________________________________________________________
core in an evaporator housing.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________

7. Determine and list any necessary action(s).

______________________________________________________________________________________________
The hoses would need to be replaced. You need to drain the system and also replace the thermostat
______________________________________________________________________________________________
when you open the system. Refill to the proper level and with the right strength of coolant mix.
______________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________________

8. Return the vehicle to beginning condition and return any tools that you may have used to their proper
locations.
