Task Inspect, test, or replace A/C compressor. NATEF 6B2.6 Time off

Time on
CDX Tasksheet Number: H353

1. Research how to inspect, test, or replace the A/C compressor in the appropriate service information for
the vehicle you are working on and list them below: Total time
a. Inspection of A/C compressor:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
When you check the compressor you will be looking on your high side gauge to check and make
_________________________________________________________________________________________
sure the compressor is building enough pressure. If it is building too much pressure, you might
suspect to have a restriction in the system or a high side switch not working right. When the
_________________________________________________________________________________________
magnetic clutch goes bad on a compressor it will not engage because it is not getting energized or
_________________________________________________________________________________________
the air gap is too much.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

b. Testing of A/C compressor:

_________________________________________________________________________________________
You can test the compressor with a set of manifold gauges making sure the pressure is building
_________________________________________________________________________________________
correctly. You can test the field coil on the compressor with a multimeter to make sure it is engaging
a_________________________________________________________________________________________
receiving the proper voltage. You can use a feeler gauge to check the air gap on the front of the
compressor to make sure it isn't excessive.
_________________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________

c. Replacing A/C compressor (remember to vacuum the system for the recommended time to remove
moisture and contaminants):
_________________________________________________________________________________________
You will need to recover all the refrigerant from the system prior to taking off the suction and
discharge lines on the compressor. You will then need to remove the compressor. You have to add
_________________________________________________________________________________________
the correct amount of oil into the new compressor. You will vacuum the system to remove moisture
_________________________________________________________________________________________
then recharge the line.

2. Have your supervisor/instructor verify your research.

3. Ask your supervisor/instructor for a vehicle or simulator to work on.

4. Examine the vehicle/simulator A/C compressor and inspect and test the A/C compressor.

5. List the result of your inspection and test:

______________________________________________________________________________________________
After the test of the compressor the magnetic clutch engages properly with the electric fan running over
the condesor. There is no bearing noise from the compressor and the system pressure is correct.

6. Determine and list any necessary corrective action(s).
______________________________________________________________________________________________
If the pressure was too high from the high side gauge you could assume there is a restriction in the
receiver drier. Also if the compressor was changed with the wrong amount of oil it can burn up the
______________________________________________________________________________________________
compressor or damage internal components with an overcharge of oil.

7. Check corrective actions with your supervisor/instructor.

8. Replace the A/C compressor as needed.

9. Return the vehicle to beginning condition and return any tools that you may have used to their proper
locations.

10. Discuss the findings with the instructor.
