Students will come into class and get into groups of 4. 6.1A Demonstrate safe practices during laboratory
They will see a stack of cards on one side of the table, and field investigations as outlines in the Texas
and a stack on the other side of the table. They will match Safety Standards
the scenarios with the correct lab safety procedure. First
team to finish matching the cards wins.
Objective: Students will be able to identify improper
behavior in the lab and match it with the correct lab
procedure.

Big Understanding: This lesson is essential to your safety and success in this class by introducing you to correct
procedures to handle all the supplies.

Summative Assessment Evidence: I will assess the class based on the accuracy of the matches, their answer
on the post-it, and bringing back the signed lab safety sheet signed by them and their parent or guardian.

Group together the scenarios with their correct safety procedure that teaches you how to avoid harm during the
labs.

Instructional Strategies / Student Activities/ Grouping Patterns: Groups of 4 and then independent task

Teacher Input/Modeling: IDO: I tell the students the rules of the game and put them in groups. After the
game, I put up a power point presentation going over the rules of the classroom lab. I then have the students write
on a post-it and stick it to the white paper on the wall.
Guided Practice: WE DO: As a group, we will discuss the correct matches out loud, cover procedures and
rules of the lab.
CFU (Checking for understanding): Verify student matches and responses to prompt question.
Independent Practice: YOU DO (Individual students): The students will match the cards together, write on
the post-it and stick to the wall. After this, they will sign their safety procedures paper, and bring home to get
signed by parent or guardian.

Ending, Summary / Reflection:


The students will have a colored post it and they will complete the sentence To stay safe in class, I
will______ and sign their name. We will put the post its on the paper hung on the wall and it will hang all year
as a reminder.

This will look like 4 students per group, huddled around the table, quickly matching the cards to be the first ones
done.

Technology: Power point presentation to introduce the safety procedures to the students.
