6.5.2.

9 Step 9 : Vessel support (design of skirt support)

Elastic stability (buckling)

Under certain loading condition failure of a structure can occur not through yielding, but by
buckling or wrinkling. Buckling results in a gross and sudden change of shape of the structure
.This situations occur because lack of sufficient stiffness to withstand the load. The stiffness is
depending on the elastic properties and cross sectional area of vessel. Elastic buckling is the
important criterion in the design of thin walled vessel under external pressure.

c = 2 x 104 (t / Do)

10
=( 2x 104)
1078
= 185.53 N/mm2
Therefore, a critical buckling stress is 185.53 N/mm2.
When the vessel is not under pressure (where the maximum stress occur):

Maximum stress = wh
= (1.97 + 20.625) N/mm2
= 22.595 N/mm2
The maximum stress is well below the critical buckling stress. Therefore, design is satisfactory.

Design for the skirt support.

Material of construction for skirt support is carbon steel.

Design stress = 88.94 N/mm2
Youngs modulus = 200000 N/mm2

The maximum dead weight load on the skirt will occurs when the vessel is full with mixture
compound. By following equation (6.92), approximate weight is :

Approximate weight [ x D2 x (Hv)] x L (g)
4
1000 9.81
( 4
) (1.052)(20.7)( 3
)( 2
)
= 175836.01 N or 175.84 kN
Total weight = (175.84 + 83.92) kN
= 259.76 kN
Wind loading from previous calculation = 1561.60 N/m Take skirt
support as 3 m height,

Bending moment at base skirt can obtained by following equation (6.93) :

1.561kN x (Column height + skirt support height)2
=
2

(20.7m +3)2
= (1.561)
2
= 438.40 kNm2

The resultant stresses in the skirt support will calculated by following equation (6.94), (6.95) and
(6.96):

S (tensile) = bs ws

S (compressive) = bs ws

4M s
bs = (Ds ts )ts Ds
Therefore,
4( 4.38 x105)
=
(1050 + 10) 1050 (10)

= 50.106 N/mm2

W
ws (test)=
(Ds ts )ts
175836.01 =

(1050 +10) 10
= 5.280 N/mm2

ws (operating)

=
83.92x103
(1050+ 10)(10)
= 2.52 N/mm2
Maximum s (compressive);

= bsws
= 50.106 N/mm2 + 5.280 N/mm2
= 55.386 N/mm2
Maximum s (tensile):

= bsws
= 50.106 N/mm2 2.52 N/mm2
= 47.586 N/mm2

Take joint factor, E=0.85:

Criteria for design:

s (maximum, tensile) < s s E sin

47.586 < 88.94 x 0.85 x sin 900

47.586 < 95.599

s (maximum, compressive) < 0.125Ey () sin
10
55.386 < 0.125(200000)(1050) sin 90
55.386 < 238.10

Both criteria are satisfied. Add 2 mm for corrosion allowance. Therefore the design thickness is
(10 mm +2 mm )= 12mm.
