YAMADA SENSEI The Power and the Basics

- SHOMENUCHI IKKYO
o OMOTE
The first step is out diagonally, the balance is strong and grounded. Proper
extension is kept. The second step is in towards the shoulder and the third
extends the uke outwards.
o URA
The step is to the side with FULL ARM EXTENSION this puts the opponent off
balance. THEN THE MOTION COMES FROM HIPS AND SPIRALS DOWN AS YOUR
ENTIRE BODY LOWERS WHILE TURNING.
- SHOMENUCHI NIKYO
o OMOTE
Complete ikkyo first with proper extension. The hand MUST CONTROL ELBOW
VERY WELL BEFORE CHANGING GRIP WITH THE OTHER HAND, otherwise escape
will be possible. There are two ways to change grips palm and thumb. Must
extend on the elbow well. After changing continue to finish with same steps as
ikkyo, put the knee down UNDER THE SHOULDER FIRST.
o URA
Complete the first step as in ikkyo with good extension. DO NOT GRAB THE
FOREARM/WRIST, MUST USE ELBOW EXACTLY AS IKKYO, otherwise dangerous
for you. Do not go directly for the forearm/wrist!
When you complete the turn, switch grips in one of two ways and put the wrist
onto the shoulder to get support from the body. Bring the other arm in thus
bending the ukes elbow and bow with the entire body, KEEPING STRONG
CENTRE. Do not use force, just lower the body and centre.
BE FLEXIBLE IF HIS ARM IS STIFF, PUSH ON IT SLIGHTLY TO THE SIDE SO THAT IT
BENDS AS YOU MOVE THE ARM IN STEALING HIS ENERGY, THEN CONTINUE AS
NORMAL.
Make another strong tankan turn as you put one hand on the elbow and bring
the opponent to the ground.
Same finish, the first leg is the one below the shoulder.
Do not stand too close, nor too far.
If your stance is too narrow, you might be uprooted. If too wide, it becomes
inflexible.
If the uke has the elbow straight, the situation for him is hopeless and
dangerous.
- SHOMENUCHI SANKYO
o What controls the grip is the little and the ring finger, not the thumb. In order to keep
correct arm position of uke, lower your body.
o Do not use arms to turn uke! Use the hips leading the entire body!
o OMOTE
I enter straight ahead, so I need to move the opponent to the side, with a twist
in the hips. Simultaneously, as soon as you move him to the side, cut down, and
this creates the room to step in, so come around to the top of the arm, and still
keeping the sankyo grip, put the other hand on the elbow and move diagonally
out and always pulling the uke to the ground (closer foot steps out and goes to
the knee), and putting the closer knee next to his neck. Change hands for finish;
bring the other knee around and down.
From shomenuchi: start with ikkyo, and then twist his arm towards him inward
so that the switch for the other hand is easy. Then walk around and finish.
o URA
Cut directly down this will bring the uke towards you, so you need to step out
with the inner leg followed by another step with the outer leg. Proceed to finish
as before.
From shomen: start with ikkyo, then simply take the hand from the elbow and
get the sankyo grip. Proceed as described above.
- YONKYO
o Put focus on the elbow you are moving the elbow, not the wrist. Make it a circular
motion. It is like holding and cutting down with a sword.
o From shomen and ikkyo position twist the arm inwards as in sankyo before changing
grip.
o For ura keep turning with the sword, not just directly down.

YOKOMENUCHI SHIHONAGE

- Step sideways and back so with the right hand attacking my right foot would step slightly to
the right and the left foot would step back to open.
- Do not grab, nor block, GUIDE DOWN. The other hand attacks then comes down to meet the
other hand for the grab. At this point uke and nage face each other.
- Step through very well this will enable good control over the finish once through. It enables
good centre.
- Both omote and ura are possible.
