Dear Friend,
Greetings to you once again on this beautiful day which the
Lord has made for us! To know that the Lord is moving by His Spirit and that we
matter to God makes it a great day to be alive! Jesus Christ our Lord has made it
possible for us to have communion with Him. He paved the way into God’s presence
with His great love for us.
There are some marvelous Scriptures that give us faith that we, too, can enter
His presence. Jesus told Peter, “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom
of heaven…” (Matthew 16:19). These keys of the kingdom are no longer needed by
Peter (because he’s already in heaven!) but have been handed down to us in our day
as we grapple with the many trials and situations we face. A key releases a lock. It is
the authority to open or close a door, and the Lord gave the church the keys to the
kingdom. There are more than one key to living an overcoming life and it all starts
with the Lord Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. He gave us authority to act
in His name. Knowing this gives us power to unlock those difficult areas we struggle
with.
I find it interesting that this benediction was pronounced on a particular city
named “Philadelphia,” or “The City of Brotherly Love.” It is one of the most
powerful keys in life: brotherly love. The Apostle John wrote that if we can’t love
our brother who we can see, how can we love God who we can’t see? The things
that are written here in Revelation 3 are centered around how we treat others, think
of others, and if we love others or not. God will bless us if we keep a good attitude
towards others. Some may say, “But they treated me sooo bad!” Let me ask you this:
is God more concerned with how people treat you as He is your attitude and how
you treat them back? Don’t worry: He will talk to them. But as for me, is what they
did to me eating me up so that I’m no longer entering into the presence of God?
There must be a key that will unlock me from this self-imposed prison. I can’t enter
His presence if I have hatred or bitterness in my heart. If you are struggling with this
I have good news for you! There is a key that God has provided through our Lord
Jesus Christ! He said, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and
everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not
knoweth not God; for God is love” (I John 4: 7 & 8). The key here of course is
that God is love. We cannot know God if we do not love one another. But if we love
each other, there is a promise that we can know God, for God is love. Knowing the
love God has for each of us is a reward that awaits us as we unlock those doors that
have separated us for so long a time. Maybe you’re afraid that your love won’t be
received. Ah, but the Scripture says, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love
casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect
in love” (I John 4:18). This reminds me of a story I heard many years ago of a
Christian woman who went on a mission trip to Haiti. Everything was fine until she
found out they had to go to a little island off the mainland. It was a little boat and the
waters were choppy that day. But she had to make that voyage because there were a
people in great need on that little island and they made a commitment to help them.
In her fear of the waters she kept thinking of that verse of Scripture, “There is no
fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.” Somewhere about half-way to the
island a peace came over her heart and a love for the people that were in need
overwhelmed her and she realized the fear she had was gone! God’s love is the
answer for a fearful world! That fear never returned. Let God’s love unlock your
world today. It’s not your love: it’s His. And it’s a love that passes all human
understanding. It is a gift He wants to give you. All you have to do is ask for it and
receive it and it will be given to you! That is the key that will begin to unlock many
things in your world: God’s love.
I hope this letter encouraged you to open your heart to God’s love. May His
great love, mercy, and peace be always yours as you draw nigh to God. Please
remember that our church is praying for you today. If you don’t have a church I
