Verification of Soghd , Soghdian and J iu Xing Hu Xu Xuya ( 8)

Abstract : The paper st udies different appellatio ns of Soghd in ancient Per sian and Greek his2
torical material s and distinguishes t he limit s of Soghdian territory in different historical periods
according to so me Arabian Islamic geo grap hic document s. The aut hor discriminates t he fo ur
terms Kangju ( Soghdian ) , Kangguo ( Samarkand ) , Suge and Sute ( Soghdian ) mentio ned in Chi2
nese historical records and believes t hat t he Soghdians who came to China in t he Wei , J in till t he
Tang Dynast y are mainly co mpo sed of Indo scyt hes in Soghdian territory as well as Soghdian abo2
rigines. So J iu Xing Hu ( Nine Clans of no n - Han people ) , not Sute ( Soghdian ) , is t he p roper
name for t he people of nine clans of Zhaowu in t he Sui and Tang dynasties.
