1 Development Background

1-1 Development Objectives

In the market, a wide array of new digital cameras, including those equipped with a high-power optical zoom lens
(approx. 6x to 10x), has already been released by our competitors. In order to meet the competition, Canon should
introduce more competitive products.

The PowerShot S1 IS is a digital camera equipped with a high-power optical zoom lens featuring an Image
Stabilizer System (IS), which makes it possible to shoot at telescopic range. The PowerShot S1 IS also offers both
wide and teleconverters, in addition to almost all of the functionality provided by the PowerShot S series, making it
a full-feature camera comparable to the PowerShot G series. This camera will help Canon to expand its market
share where digital cameras with high-power optical zoom lenses are becoming more popular among general
consumers, as well as among professional and dedicated amateurs and business users.

Also, for the first time in the history of Canon digital still cameras, the PowerShot S1 IS is equipped with a
fullmotion movie shooting mode which offers a long-recording capacity for movies (30 frames/second, VGAsize
640 x 480). The PowerShot S1 IS, designed with a compact body unit thanks to a retractable IS lens and a
highspeed zoom function supported by the micro motor USM drive, is definitely powerful enough to shoot sports
events under frequently changing shooting conditions, and record dynamic moving images. Moreover, the high-
speed AF and high-definition AE/AWB, which operate even during movie recording, and the zoom, AF lock,
exposure lock and compensation control provide high-power zoom capability available for movie shooting pur-
poses. While it has long been expected that movie shooting capability would become a significant factor in the
digital still camera market, Canon pioneers the digital still camera market with new and innovative ideas, and the
new PowerShot S1 IS will help Canon maintain its lead over the competition and further strengthen its position
among manufacturers of future digital camera products.

1-3 Design Concept
The PowerShot S1 IS is designed as a special model of the PowerShot S series, designed from the ground up with
superb functionality and compactness in mind.

1-3-1 Original curved surfaces create a new era for digital cameras
The PowerShot S1 IS has a high-power optical zoom lens equipped with the PowerShot S series' first full-
motion movie and still image shooting functions. Its original curved surface creates an atmosphere of a new
era for digital cameras.

The camera front, especially the flash area, is smoothly concave, representing an entirely new type of form.
Its dynamically curved surface embraces a bold yet user-friendly image.

1-3-2 Perfect interface for still images and movies

The large-sized grip of the PowerShot S1 IS, equivalent to that of a single lens reflex camera, provides a
steady hold. This will further ensure the efficiency of camera shake correction during high-power zoom
shooting.

In addition, the grip slants forward, and its back bottom shape is molded to feel soft to the touch. This is
certain to reduce user's fatigue even over a long movie shooting.
Furthermore, the start/stop shooting buttons for movie shooting, which are located just below the shooting
mode dial on the back, are designed for easy operation.

1) Turn the mode dial with the thumb and select the movie mode.
2) With the same hand that holds the camera, use the thumb to push the movie button just below the mode
dial and recording starts instantly.

Normally, the movie button also serves as the shutter button. With the PowerShot S1 IS, however, the
movie button is dedicated to start/stop shooting for movie shooting, and is only used for the movie
mode.

1-3-3 Coated in two-tone silver for high quality appearance

The camera body, with its characteristic spherical design, is coated in highlighted silver. The built-in
grips on the right-and-left sides and the lens barrel ring are coated in dark silver.

The design and two-tone silver coloring complement each other, giving the product a sharp look.

2 Features

2-1 High-power Optical Zoom

2-1-1 High-resolution 10x optical zoom lens

The shooting lens used in the PowerShot S1 IS, which sports a high performance optical 10x zoom lens, is
equipped with an image stabilizer system and has a compact retractable type. With all lens groups extended
during zooming, the whole length of the shooting lens has been shortened, and the radius of the frontmost
lens reduced.

Excellent delineation, which has been obtained at all focal lengths, enables the user to shoot a variety of
scenes from sports events to landscape. The 10x zoom lens is particularly well-suited for shooting sports
events.

Main specifications of the shooting lens

Focal length: 5.8 58 mm (35mm film equivalent: 38 380 mm)

Open f/number: f/2.8 (W) f/3.1 (T)
Lens construction: 11 elements in 9 groups (including one aspherical lens)
Whole length of the shooting lens: 70.3 73.3 mm

38 mm 100 mm 380 mm

8
2-1-2 The retractable lens comes equipped with the shift-type image stabilizer system (IS)
When shooting at telescopic range, slow shutter speeds increase the effect of camera shake. To avoid this
problem, the PowerShot S1 IS is equipped with a shift-type image stabilizer system that reduces the effect
of camera shake. The shift-type image stabilizer system for digital cameras, first introduced to the world by
Canon, corrects camera shake instantly with high precision.

Figure 2-2 Effect of image stabilizer system

(Image showing the effects of the image stabilizer system)

Effect of camera shake correction : approx. from 2 to 3 steps in shutter speed equivalent

Camera shake correction for movies

The image stabilizer system is available for movie recording with the PowerShot S1 IS. Therefore, camera
shake can be corrected not only for still images but also during movie recording.
Retractable lens equipped with a high precision image stabilizer system (IS)
The PowerShot S1 IS has a retractable lens equipped with a shift-type image stabilizer system. The lens has
an intricate structure of movable parts that allow the lens to retract completely inside of the camera body.
In addition, the shift-type image stabilizer system uses a vibration detection gyro that moves the lens to a
position that will decrease or cancel camera shake, which requires high-precision control.

The combination of Canon's advanced process control technology and optical technology allowed equipping
the PowerShot S1 IS's retractable lens with a shift-type image stabilizer system. This retractable lens makes
it possible for the PowerShot S1 IS to sport both a compact body design and a camera shake dampening
function, which is indispensable for high-power zoom lenses.

2-1-2 High-speed zoom achieved with a USM drive

An ultrasonic motor (USM) has been added to the PowerShot S1 IS's zoom drive. The USM is first intro-
duced to the world by Canon as a camera lens drive motor, and its high-power rotation and fast response
facilitate high-speed zooming. The USM is simply structured, which makes extremely quiet operations
possible at zooming.

Table 2-1 Zooming speed

9
2-4-1 Two selectable zooming speeds
The zoom lever is used to switch the zooming speeds. Two different
zooming speeds are available as shown in Table 2-2.

2-5-1 Up to approx. 32x high-power zoom capability

The PowerShot S1 IS has a digital zoom function that magnifies images up to approx. 32x when used in
combination with the optical zoom.

2-2 Advanced Movie Mode

2-2-1 Enabling full-motion movie recording with high-image quality

For the first time in the history of Canon digital still cameras, the PowerShot S1 IS is equipped with a full-
motion movie shooting mode. High movie image quality is achieved with the acclaimed DIGIC and the 30
frames/second smooth motion.
Selection of recording pixels and frame rate
Recording pixels and frame rate are selectable. Of three types of recording pixels for movie mode, VGA
offers higher clarity of images than QVGA. VGA-Fine gives even higher quality images than VGA. Frame
rate is the number of frames recorded per second. 30 frames/second setting offers smoother motion of
movies than 15 frames/second setting.

Shooting time for the same memory capacity may vary depending on the number of recording pixels and
frame rate.

Table 2-3 Selection of Recording Pixels

Table 2-4 Selection of Frame rates

10
High image quality is maintained by lowering the compression rate
The PowerShot S1 IS performs high-speed processing for movie signals by providing lower data compres-
sion rates when compared to our competitors' digital cameras. This enables the PowerShot S1 IS to record
movies with greater amounts of information while reducing the amount of block noise and mosquito noise.
With the PowerShot S1 IS, normal and fine modes offer lower data compression rates to create higher
quality images than those of our competitors' digital cameras. Especially, movies recorded in the fine mode
show much less block noise.
Long movie recording with sound
The PowerShot S1 IS can record longer movies than the previous models with the help of high-speed movie
processing and a high-speed CF card. Although recording time may vary depending on the storage medium
capacity and image quality, movies up to 1 GB or up to approx. 60 minutes can be recorded continuously.

2-2-2 AE/AF/AWB modes can be used during movie recording, and zooming, AF lock, and
exposure lock and compensation control are selectable for movie shooting.
When shooting movies, the focus may switch from close subjects to far subjects and the exposure may have
to be adjusted to compensate for changes in the surrounding light conditions. In addition, since the distance
between the camera and subject may change, if focus adjustments are not possible, the image may become
blurred. Unlike previous models, the AE, AF, and AWB options can be set during movie recording with the
PowerShot S1 IS. In addition, zooming, AF lock, exposure lock and compensation control* can also be
performed while the camera is recording a movie.

*The locked exposure value can be compensated in +2 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

11
2-2-3 High-speed editing of long movie files
Movie clips, even short ones, require a lot of storage space. If a CF card runs short of space during
shooting, deleting unnecessary scenes of a movie is a more effective way of creating space than deleting a
large number of unnecessary still images.
With the PowerShot S1 IS, users can choose the parts they wish to delete by the second. The parts to delete
can be chosen either from the start point or from the end point of a movie clip.

Figure 2-4 Editing movies

The PowerShot S1 IS has its own editing algorithm that enables users to edit large-sized movies in a short
period of time. Even a large-sized movie file does not require a long editing time (when overwriting it*).

Movie clips can be edited even if there is no free space left on the storage medium. Therefore, unnecessary
scenes of a finished movie clip can be deleted even if the storage medium is full and the space thus created
can then be used for further recording (still images or movies). Some of competitors' digital cameras require
free space on the storage medium for editing. Such cameras are unable to create free space by editing when
the storage medium is full, thus force users to delete recorded movie files for continuously recording.

*Edited files can either be saved by overwriting the original file or saved as a new file.

2-2-4 Improved sound quality

The sound quality of movies shot with the PowerShot S1 IS has been greatly improved, compared to
previous models, by changing sampling frequency and quantization bit rate. Both movie sounds and still
image sound memos have been improved.

Table 2-5 Sound quality comparison between the PowerShot S1 IS and the previous models

12
2-3 Superb Operability

2-3-1 Shortcut button that can be assigned to different functions

With the PowerShot S1 IS, frequently used functions can be assigned to a shortcut button. Any time-
consuming functions in regular operations, such as those selected from the menu, can be assigned to the
Shortcut button beforehand. Simply pressing the Shortcut button can start the function instantly.
One of eight possible functions (listed in table 2-6) can be assigned to the Shortcut button.

Table 2-6 Functions that can be assigned to the Shortcut button

2-3-2 Independent movie button

With the PowerShot S1 IS, a movie button was added
exclusively for starting and stopping movie recording. On
previous models, the shutter
button was also used to start/stop movie recording. Add-
ing a separate movie-dedicated
button makes long movie recording easy and comfort-
able.
The Movie button can only be operated when the movie
mode is selected with the mode dial.

The tally lamp blinks during movie shooting. It can be turned on/off in the Rec. menu.

2-3-3 Perfect interface for still images and movies

See 1-3 Design Concept (p. 5)

13
2-3-4 Electronic viewfinder
The use of the high zoom powerd (10x) lens on the PowerShot S1 IS makes it impractical to use the external
type optical viewfinder. A 0.33 class, TTL type electronic viewfinder (EVF) has been adopted instead.

Note that the electronic viewfinder and LCD monitor cannot be used to display images at the same time.

2-3-5 Pop-up flash retracts into camera body when not in use
The PowerShot S1 IS features a built-in pop-up flash such as EOS. The built-in flash retracts into the
camera body when not in use, and pops up and fires automatically if ambient light is low (Auto pop-up: On;
Flash Mode: Auto). If the flash mode is set to On and Auto pop-up is set to Auto, the flash will pop up and fire
automatically.

2-5 System Accessories

2-5-1 High-speed CF card that enables full-motion movie recording

If a CF card with slow writing speed is used, users may not be able to record long movies. The PowerShot
S1 IS is equipped with a super-high speed CF card to record full-motion movies (30 frames/second). This
highspeed CF card has largely reduced the limits of buffer memory and has helped increase recording time
length for movies.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

2.2.2 Picture Processing

1) The drive pulse of the CCD sensor is created by both clock from MAIN CPU and TG that is
operated by sync. signal.
The picture signal by the drive pulse is output from CCD sensor.
The output signal of the CCD picture is converted to the signal processing and the digital data by
the CDS and A/D converter, and is sent to the MAIN CPU.

2) The MAIN CPU circuit performs the following signal processing.

Processes the picture data (using the SDRAM).
Writes and reads the data to and from the CF card.
Outputs analog video signal to the LCD and CVF.

3) The video signal that is supplied form the MAIN CPU is controlled by the LCD driver and is
displayed on the LCD panel and LCD Finder. The video amplifier is activated when the video
jack is inserted to the AV jack and drives the video signal in 75 .

2.2.3 Audio Processing (During record and playback)

1) During animation recording.
The microphone input audio signal is amplified by AUDIOPROCESS converted to the digital
data by MAIN CPU and is recorded.
2) During playback, the data is converted back to the analog audio signal and is output to the AV
jack and speaker from AUDIO PROCESSOR amplifier.
