THE BLESSING

Silent night, sacred night, Silent night, sacred night,

Bethlehem sleeps, yet what light Shepherds first see the light,
Floats around the holy pair; Hear the hallelujahs ring
Songs of angels fill the air - Which the angel chorus sing:
Strains of heavenly peace, Christ the Saviour is come,
Strains of heavenly peace. Christ the Saviour is come.

Silent night, sacred night,

Son of God, O what light
BIRDSALL CHURCH
Radiates from Thy manger bed
Over realms with darkness spread -
Thou in Bethlehem born,
Thou in Bethlehem born.
*CAROL
We are very pleased to welcome Revd Jenny Hill to her first Woodleigh Carol Service.
Having taken up her position as Rector of our parish in October, she has kindly agreed to In the bleak mid-winter Enough for Him, whom cherubim
lead us today. Frosty wind made moan. Worship night and day,
Please stand and join in the singing of the carols and the verses of the hymns marked * Earth stood hard as iron, A heartful of love,
HYMN water like a stone: And a mangerful of hay;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Enough for Him, whom angels
Once in Royal David‟s City And through all His wondrous childhood Snow on snow, Fall down before,
Stood a lowly cattle shed He would honour and obey, In the bleak mid-winter, The ox and ass and camel
Where a mother laid her baby Love and watch the lowly Maiden, Long ago. Which adore.
In a manger for his bed; In whose gentle arms He lay:
Mary was that Mother mild, Christian children all must be Our God, heaven cannot hold Him, Angels and archangels
Jesus Christ her little Child. Mild, obedient, good as He. nor earth sustain; May have gathered there,
Heaven and earth shall flee away Cherubim and seraphim
He came down to earth from Heaven *For He is our childhood pattern; When He comes to reign; Thronged the air -
Who is God and Lord of all, Day by day like us He grew. In the bleak mid-winter But only His mother
And His shelter was a stable; He was little weak and helpless, A stable-place sufficed In her maiden bliss
And His cradle was a stall; Tears and smiles like us He knew; The Lord God Almighty, Worshipped the Beloved
With the poor, and mean, and lowly And He feeleth for our sadness, Jesus Christ. With a kiss.
Lived on earth our Saviour Holy. And He shareth in our gladness.
What can I give Him,
*And our eyes at last shall see Him, Poor as I am?
Through His own redeeming love, If I were a shepherd
For that child so dear and gentle I would bring a lamb;
Is our Lord in Heaven above; If I were a wise man
And He leads His children on I would do my part;
To the place where He is gone Yet what I can I give Him -
Give my heart

O little town of Bethlehem How silently, how silently CAROL
How still we see thee lie The wondrous gift is given!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep So God imparts to human hearts
The silent stars go by The blessings of His heaven. Mon beau sapin, Roi des forêts Toi, que Noël planta chez nous
Yet in thy dark streets shineth No ear may his His coming, Que j'aime ta verdure! Au saint anniversaire
The everlasting Light But in this world of sin, Quand, par l'hiver, bois et guérêts Joli sapin, comme ils sont doux
The hopes and fears of all the years Where meek souls will receive him still, Sont dépouillés de leurs attraits Et tes bonbons et tes joujoux
Are met in thee tonight The dear Christ enters in. Mon beau sapin, Roi des forêts Toi, que Noël planta chez nous
Tu gardes ta parure. Tout brillant de lumière.
For Christ is born of Mary O holy Child of Bethlehem
And gathered all above Descend to us, we pray
While mortals sleep, the angels keep Cast out our sin and enter in
Their watch of wondering love Be born to us today
O morning stars together We hear the Christmas angels
Proclaim the holy birth The great glad tidings tell
And praises sing to God the King O come to us, abide with us
And Peace to men on earth Our Lord Emmanuel

THE SHEPHERDS
Out of a journey cold and far
Reading: St. Luke II 15-20 MATTHEW BINNERSLEY
Out of a seed in the wind above
*HYMN Out of the human need for love
While shepherds watch‟d their flocks by night, The heavenly Babe you there shall find Out of the clouds into snowflakes torn
All seated on the ground, To human view displayed, Out of the night‟s desire for morn
The angel of the Lord came down All meanly wrapped in swathing bands
And glory shone around. And in a manger laid‟. Tonight a new boy born
Tonight a new boy born
„Fear not‟, said he; for mighty dread Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith Tonight a new boy born
Had seized their troubled mind; Appeared a shining throng Tonight a new boy born
„Glad tidings of great joy I bring Of angels praising God, who thus
To you and all mankind‟. Addressed their joyful song: Out of the spreading wings of a bird Out of a trumpet‟s triumphant note
Out of an angel‟s whispered word Out of a donkey‟s wordless throat
„To you in David‟s town this day „All glory be to God on high, Out of the cities asleep so deep Out of the soul‟s desire for more
Is born of David‟s line And to the earth be peace; Out of the fields of cows and sheep Out of straw on a stable floor
A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord; Goodwill henceforth, from Heaven to men Out of the midnight hour and the dawn Out of a light from the heavens torn
And this shall be the sign: Begin and never cease. Out of a labour bravely born Out of a cross fashioned from corn

Tonight a new boy born… Tonight a new boy born…
