WODP SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The scholarship grant under the Isabelo Reyes Scholarship was extended to the
children of rubber plantation workers at a time when the price of latex was in a slump
to help struggling workers and their families. Jeldon B. Malinao a son of a rubber
tapper was able to finish his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education last April
2016 through this program.

Jeldon is not unfamiliar to DOLE programs and services. The DOLE had helped him
finish his high school education. Prior to his WODP scholarship he was already a
beneficiary of DOLE through the Special Program for the Employment of Students
(SPES), as a member of the Students at Risk of Dropping Out (SARDO) assisted by
DOLEs Guidance Counselors Network Program. As SARDO, they were later
organized for the Youth Entrepreneurship Support Program.

After graduating from high school, Jeldon has to face another hurdle in his life. The
meager income of his father could not send him to college. His determination, and
perseverance despite his familys financial difficulties helped him overcome this
challenge through the help of the DOLE and the management of the rubber
plantation cooperative - GARBEMCO.

According to Jeldon, my WODP Scholarship was an answered prayer for me. I

really wanted to pursue a college education but my parents lack the resources to
send me to school. The WODP Scholarship grant in 2013 became a blessing and it
helped me get a college degree.

His dream to become a teacher was realized as he was able to graduate in his
course in Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education last April 2016 at Western
Mindanao State University-Ipil External Studies Unit. After his graduation he was
absorbed by the DOLE as a Job Order Worker wherein he served for 8 months.
Currently, he is applying for a job as a teacher here in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.
