Numeracy Support For TTA Skills Test

Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

Introduction

To succeed in the skills test you need to:

i) have an understanding of the equivalence between fractions,

decimals and percentages;
ii) understand how to convert between them.

Many skills test questions test this understanding.

e.g.
Mental Arithmetic Question 1
Out of 3 classes of 28 pupils, 56 pupils took the higher Science
paper. What percentage took this paper? Give your answer to one
decimal place.

Mental Arithmetic Question 2

In a test a pupil scored 18 marks out of 25. What is the pupil's
score as a percentage?

The purpose of this interactive worksheet is to help you develop

your understanding so that you can answer the skills test questions.

Incidentally, the answers were 66.7% and 72% to questions 1 and

2 respectively.

Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

What fractions, decimals and percentages represent

Fractions decimals and percentages are all forms of expressing

parts of a whole.
The same number can be presented in any of the 3 forms.

1/2 = 0.5 = 50%

Fractions
Fractions are written in the form of a numerator (top of fractions)
and a denominator (bottom of fraction).
The denominator indicates how many equal sized parts the whole is
split into.
The numerator indicates how many of those parts are involved.

e.g. A pizza is cut into 8 equal sized slices and you eat 3 of them.
You have eaten 3/8 of the pizza.

Decimals
In the place value system numbers to the right of the decimal place
indicate parts of a whole number.

Remember the place value system and the value of the numbers to
the right of the decimal place.
Image from http://www.themathpage.com/ARITH/decimals.htm
So, 0.4 consists of four lots of 1/10 (4 x 1/10) which is 4/10.
So, 0.612 consists of six lots of 1/10 (6/10), one lots of 1/100, and
two lots of 1/1000 (2/1000).

Percentages
Percent means out of 100.
A percentage is simply another format of writing a fraction with 100
as the denominator.
e.g. If you get 45% in a test that is really 45/100.

There are some common equivalences of fractions, decimals and

percentages you will need to know.

Converting fractions into decimals and vice versa

Converting fractions into decimals

If fractions and decimals are different ways of saying the same

thing, it must be possible to change from one to the other.

3/15 can be read as 3 15. The line in a fraction is a dividing line.

Some fractions do not have finite decimal values. Be careful

rounding off decimals.

For mental arithmetic questions nearly all fractions you have to

convert to decimals will be ones you should know (or will need to
learn).

Converting decimals into fractions

Remember the definition of a decimal. 0.1 = 1/10, 0.01 = 1/100,

etc

Look at the last place value used in the number, use that as the
denominator and read off the digits as the numerator. Then simplify
the fraction if possible.

1. 1/10 1/100 1/1000

0. 2 3 23/100

0. 1 2 5 125/1000 -->
5/40 --> 1/8

Converting percentages into decimals and vice versa

Converting percentages to decimals

Percentage --> Decimal

Divide by 100 (Digits move 2 places to the right.)

E.g. 65% = 0.65

Converting decimals to percentages

You do the reverse process to converting percentages to decimals.

Decimals --> Percentage

Multiply by 100 (Digits move 2 places to the left.)

E.g. 0.48 = 48%

Converting percentages into fractions and vice versa

Converting percentages into fractions

Percentage --> Fraction

1) Percentage/100
2) simplify fraction if possible.

E.g. 64% = 64/100 = 32/50 = 16/25

E.g. 28% = 28/100 = 14/50 = 7/25

Converting fractions into percentages

There are two methods of doing this:

Method 1
A fractions with a denominator of 5, 10, 20, 25 or 50 can easily be
converted to a percentage.
Think if you can easily multiply the bottom of the fraction so it
becomes 100. You can multiply the top of the fraction by the same
number to give you the percentage.

E.g. 3/5 = 6/10 = 60/100 = 60%

E.g. 7/25 = 28/100 = 28%

Method 2
i) Convert the fraction into a decimal (see earlier).
ii) Convert the decimal into a percentage (x100)

Common equivalences between fractions, decimals and
percentages

To pass the skills test it is important to know some common

equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages. This will
enable you to answer questions quickly in the skills test.

You will need to know the equivalences in the table below.

Percentage
Decimal Fraction
(%)
10 0.1 1/10
20 0.2 1/5
30 0.3 3/10
40 0.4 2/5
50 0.5 1/2
60 0.6 3/5
70 0.7 7/10
80 0.8 4/5
90 0.9 9/10
25 0.25 1/4
75 0.75 3/4
5 0.05 1/20
12.5 0.125 1/8
33.3 0.33 1/3
66.7 0.67 2/3

Working out a percentage increase/decrease

1. Find the difference between the original and the new number.
2. Divide this by the original number.
3. Multiply by 100.

E.g. Last year 30 pupils gained a level 3 in the national assessment

tests. This year 44 gained a level 3. Calculate the percentage
increase.

Actual increase = 44 - 30 = 14
Percentage increase = 14/30 x 100 = 46.7% (1.d.p)
