3 Field Experiences
Candidates engage in appropriate field experiences to synthesize and apply the content and professional
knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified in these standards.

Reflection

I helped a student use assistive technology to overcome the learning difficulties associated with dyslexia.
I engaged in over 15 hours of field experience and worked with the student on how to use the text-to-
speech and speech-to-text functions on both the Chromebook and iPad. We worked together on
assignments and I helped them learn how to use the assistive technology tools on the devices. This
experience showed how powerful assistive technology can be and that all students should have this
opportunity. The student went from taking a week to master an assignment or standard to being able to
complete and master it in less than 40 minutes. The students confidence and excitement for learning
dramatically improved, because of the field experience.

Artifact 1: Assistive Technology Field Experience

Standard 6.3, Field Experiences requires the candidate to engage in appropriate field experiences to
synthesize and apply the content and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions identified in these
standards. I engaged in a field experience which taught me how impactful and empowering assistive
technology can be students with disabilities. I researched and helped a student with dyslexia use speech-
to-text and text-to-speech technology help improve their academic capabilities in all courses. The field
experience showed how I engaged in field experiences.

I learned how help a student use assistive technology to overcome several of the challenges associated
with dyslexia. This experience taught me how to evaluate assistive technology, train and work with a
student on how to use the technology, and see how impactful and helpful assistive technology can be for
students with disabilities.

This will impact school improvement because as a system I can help guide and develop a plan for
adopting and implementing assistive technology. Students will receive assistive technology that will help
them perform at the level of other students in the classroom.
