    1) A patient's blood type (ABO and RhD status) is tested to determine compatibility for transfusion. 2) If the patient has atypical antibodies, donor blood with the same blood type but lacking antigens targeted by the antibodies is selected. 3) For immediate need, type O RhD-negative blood is used, otherwise fully cross-matched donor blood of the same blood type is transfused after 10-15 minutes if antigens are compatible or after 45+ minutes with full cross-matching.
