1 NC Compiler

1.1 Overview
NC compiler The NC compiler, which is integrated into the user interface, provides a
preliminary translation of NC programs. The existing Bosch Rexroth NC
compiler implements the following functions:
Chamfers and roundings,
Enhanced look-ahead function,
Macro technique and
Modal function
Furthermore, user-developed compilers can be tied in.

Source program The program created by the programmer is described as source

program.
The NC blocks are numbered by means of the source block number.
The source block number is made up of the prefixed letter N and a
four-digit block number.
Example: Insert chamfer
:
N0053 G1 Z... X... CF ;Insert chamfer
N0054 G1 Z... X...
:

Compiled program The program created by the compiler is described as compiled

(object file) program or object file.
The end user cannot view or modify the compiled program.
The NC blocks are numbered by means of the source block number
and the extended block number.
The extended block number consists of a four-digit number separated
from the source block number by a colon.
Example: Insert chamfer
The compiler changes block N0053, inserts an intermediate block
(N0053:0001) and modifies block N0054.
:
N0053:0000 G1 Z... X... ;Insert chamfer
N0053:0001 G1 Z... X...
N0054:0000 G1 Z... X...

1.2 Activation of the NC Compiler

Within the NC editor, the NC compiler is activated in the Extras/Compiler
settings menu.

Compiler-Activ1.bmp

Fig. 1-1: NC compiler activation

The dialog for activation of the NC compiler also offers the possibility to
enter a user compiler and global compiler variables. See the chapter
Enhanced Look-Ahead Function for a detailed explanation of these
variables.

Note: A user compiler can only be activated after purchase of a

license. If no license has been purchased, the entry fields are
locked.

Theoretically, four user compilers can be entered.

1.3 Chamfers and Roundings

Chamfers and roundings The commands
CF (insert chamfer) and
RD (insert rounding)
enable chamfers and roundings to be inserted.

Syntax CF.. or CF=... ;Insert chamfer

RD.. or RD=... ;(insert rounding)

Explanation A further linear contour (chamfer) or an arc (rounding) can be inserted

between linear or circular contours.

Fasen_Rundungen.bmp

Fig. 1-2: Inserting chamfers and roundings between linear and circular contours

Specifying the RD command tangentially inserts an arc of the radius

RD between the preceding and the subsequent movement command.
Starting from the intersection point of the movement commands
involved, the chamfer width CF is removed from both movement
blocks; the resulting coordinate values are connected by a linear path
(G1).
The value that follows CF specifies the chamfer width; the value after
RD specifies the rounding radius.
The instructions CF and RD may be inserted between two movement
blocks at the end of the first block. The required chamfer or rounding
will then be inserted after the block in which it has been programmed.
Alternatively, the CF or RD command may be inserted in a separate
block between two movement blocks.
Chamfers and roundings are always produced on the active plane.

1-4 NC Compiler NC Compiler

Chamfers and Roundings (Example)

Rundung.BMP

Fig. 1-3: Inserting a rounding

Contiguous movement blocks Chamfers and roundings should only be inserted between contiguous
movement blocks. There may be a maximum of twenty blocks without
movement between two movement blocks that shall be interconnected
by a chamfer or rounding.
The preceding and the subsequent movement blocks must contain
either a linear or a circular movement.
The command for inserting a chamfer or rounding must be written
either in the first movement block or after it, but always before the
second movement block. If the compiler encounters the insertion
command for a chamfer or rounding in the second movement block, it
inserts the chamfer or rounding between the second and the
subsequent movements.
If the instruction for inserting a chamfer or rounding is written in a
separate NC block, the immediate preceding NC block must contain
the related linear or circular movement.
Movements that are outside the active working plane cannot be
interconnected by chamfers or roundings.

No variables For the NC blocks between which a chamfer or rounding is to be inserted,

the end points that lie in the current working plane may not be specified
by variables.

Note: Inserting a specified chamfer or rounding between the pre-

ceding and the subsequent movement block must
geometrically be possible. If this is not possible, the compiler
automatically reduces the chamfer or rounding concerned to a
corresponding value (if necessary even to 0, without issuing
an error message).

Axis Definition with ACHS_DEF

The ACHS_DEF command selects the axes which are currently available
in the process. These may also include axes from other processes
passed via GAX and FAX. However, all linear and round axes currently
available in the process must be entered even those not involved in the
movement. The command should stand at the start of the program.
The ACHS_DEF instruction is only necessary if axes have been removed
from or added to the process by means of passing of axes (GAX/FAX).
Axes definition is only used in connection with roundings/chamfers and
with the enhanced Look-ahead function.

Syntax ACHS_DEF(A1,A2,A2...)

Explanation A1,A2,A3...: Axis denomination or axis number.

With axes which primarily are part of the process, the axis denomination
or axis number can be used. Axes which have been passed must be
defined by their axis number.

Example: ACHS_DEF(X,Z1,C,6)

1.4 Macro Technique

Macro A macro is the combination of individual instructions that usually must be
programmed repeatedly into a comprehensive instruction with its own
name.

Syntax DEFINE ... AS ...

Explanation A macro permits instructions to be combined that must always be written

in the same sequence (for safety reasons, for example). It enables DIN G
codes (such as the drilling cycles G80 through G89) or DIN auxiliary func-
tions (such as M6) to be simulated. Furthermore, it enables functional
sequences that cannot be accessed from the PLC (such as spindle
control during program mode) to be controlled by a single command from
the NC.

Global / local macros Besides the local macros, which the user may define within an NC program
and employ subsequently, the machine manufacturer can store global
macro definitions in the NC editor in the "Extras/Macro definition" menu
item. In contrast to local macro definitions, global macro definitions are valid
in all NC programs and in MDI operation of the graphic user interface.

Note:
A macro name may have up to 20 characters.
The instruction pertaining to a global macro can have up to 65
characters.
With a local macro, the compiler interprets all NC instructions that fol-
low the AS key word as the instruction sequence that must be inserted
instead of the macro name. It follows that no other NC command may
be programmed within an NC block after a DEFINE instruction.
Nesting macros is not permitted. This means that there may not be
any further macros within an instruction sequence that is to be in-
serted.
Example: DEFINE M86 AS M86 M3 S10
Key words may not be super-defined by macros.

Use the macro technique with extreme care, because it

allows the programming language to be heavily
changed.

1.5 Modal Function

Modal function The MODF_ON (STRI) modal function permits repeatedly used
expressions to be written only once.

Syntax MODF_ON(STRI) ;Activate modal function (modal function on)

MODF_OFF ;De-activate modal function (modal function off)

Explanation The string STRI, transferred in parentheses with the modal function,
may contain up to 80 characters.
It is inserted in all subsequent blocks with axis movements.
The modal function is deselected using the MODF_OFF key word.

Notes
The instruction concerned is executed immediately in the NC blocks in
which the user writes a modal instruction using MODF_ON.
The MODF_OFF instruction deactivates the modal instruction in the
block in which it is programmed.
It must be noted that the modal function (such as MODF_ON(RD 2))
does not have an effect on blocks without axis movements (i.e. without
feed axes).

1.6 Enhanced Look-Ahead Function,

Enhanced The enhanced look-ahead function optimizes the velocity curve of the
look-ahead function programmed path movement during compilation and/or the program
download. If required and without modifying the programmed contour, the
look-ahead function inserts intermediate blocks in order to achieve a
steadier path velocity curve.

Using the enhanced Using the enhanced look-ahead function is always expedient if an NC pro-
look-ahead function gram is to be executed that consists of very short NC blocks, and if the in-
ternal block look-ahead function proves insufficient.
With non-tangential block transitions, the NC always reduces the velocity
to zero at transitions that are crossed with G6 or G8. In order to be able to
stop in the last block, this process frequently requires continuous decel-
eration across several blocks. With very short NC blocks, the internal
MTC look-ahead function, however, usually does not recognize the end of
the polygon blocks, or an NC block that is too short, or a non-tangential
block transition in time. Consequently, the NC does not induce the
deceleration process in time, aborts NC program execution during the
deceleration process, and issues the error message Braking distance too
short.
Using the enhanced look-ahead function enables the compiler to adjust
the velocity profile of certain program sequences within the NC program
to the maximum velocities and the acceleration capability of the individual
axis. During acceleration and deceleration processes, the compiler
therefore splits the NC blocks into sub-blocks of different F values
wherever this is necessary.

Syntax LA_ON ;Enhanced Look-Ahead Function on,

(Look-ahead function, on )
LA_OFF ;Enhanced Look-Ahead Function off,
(Look-ahead function, off)

Global variables Global variables have been introduced that are used as transfer
parameters for the enhanced look-ahead function. Usually, the user can
employ these variables without modification. Some of them ( parameters
1-3 ) can be pre-assigned in the NC editor in the Extras/Compiler
settings menu item. Then, they are valid for all NC programs. If required,
the parameters 4-6 can also be used in the NC program.

1. Lowest run time of an NC record.

METB Designation: METB (minimum execution time for one block)
Value range: 3 ... 30 [ms]
Default: in Compiler settings

DOK-MTC200-NC*COMP*V23-FK01-EN-P
NC Compiler NC Compiler 1-13

Explanation: The global variable Lowest run time of an NC block

METB indicates the lowest run time on an NC block within
the polygon curve to be optimized. It must be greater than
the related block cycle time.

VFBT 2. Velocity factor for block transition

Designation: VFBT (velocity factor for block transition)
Value range: 1 ... 10 [-]
Default: in Compiler settings
Explanation: With the global variable Velocity factor for block
transition VFBT, velocity change at non-tangential block
transitions can be influenced.
The following is applicable:
Velocity change = 2 Axis acceleration VFBT [mm / s ]

BBTRC 3. Block buffer for tool radius compensation

Designation: BBTRC (block buffer for tool radius compen-
sation)
Value range: 1 ... 10 [-]
Default: in Compiler settings
Explanation: The global variable Block buffer for tool radius
compensation BBTRC specifies how many NC blocks the
enhanced look-ahead function shall take into account in
advance when it computes and checks the tool radius
compensation.

TL_RADIUS 4. Specify tool radius

Designation: TL_RADIUS[T no., E no.]
Value range: T No. 1 ... 9999999
E No. 1 ... 9
TL_RADIUS[T no., E no.] 0 ... 999.99999
Default: If the compiler does not find any information on tool
radius in the NC program via T_RADIUS[T no., E no.], the
radius is assigned the value zero.
Explanation: Using the TL_RADIUS[T-no., E-no.] command, the tool
radii that are required for the enhanced look-ahead func-
tion may centrally be defined at the beginning of the pro-
gram. The compiler employs the current T No. or E No. if
a T No. or an E No. has not been specified.

DOK-MTC200-NC*COMP*V23-FK01-EN-P
1-14 NC Compiler NC Compiler

Example:
:
N0005 TL_RADIUS[1234567,1]=24.995
N0006 TL_RADIUS[923,3]=20.31
N0007 TL_RADIUS[9,9]=29.89
:
If the tool radius path correction of the enhanced look-
ahead function is employed (TRC <> 0), the tool radius
that, using the pre-defined TL_RADIUS[T no., E no.],
has been specified in the NC program during
CAUTION compilation must exist during machining.
The tool radius compensation is limited to cutting tool of
compensation type 3.

TRC 5. Tool radius compensation

Designation: TRC (tool radius correction for look-ahead function)
Value range: 0 ... 2 [-]
Default: 0 (cannot be modified)
Explanation: TRC=0: The enhanced look-ahead function does not
perform radius correction.
TRC=1: The enhanced look-ahead function does
perform radius path correction left of contour
using the radius defined under TL_RADIUS.
TRC=2: The enhanced look-ahead function does
perform radius correction right of contour
using the radius defined under TL_RADIUS.
Recommendation: If the Enhanced look-ahead function is to be used and
tool radius compensation is necessary, it is advisable to
use the tool radius compensation of the Enhanced look-
ahead function (TRC 0) while the internal tool radius
compensation is switched off. (G40).

ADTRC 6. Loading distance to establish the tool radius compensation

Designation: ADTRC (approach distance for tool radius
compensation)
Value range: T No. 0 ... 999 99999
Default: 0 (cannot be modified)
Explanation: ADTRC = 0 The enhanced look ahead function does
not consider a positioning and retracting
path to employ the tool radius path
correction.
ADTRC <> 0 The enhanced look ahead function adds
before the first polygon element (first
movement word after LA_ON) and after
the last polygon element (last movement
word before LA_OFF) a tangentual
transition with the defined length, if the tool
radius path correction was activated with
TRC=1 or TRC=2.

Axis Definition with ACHS_DEF The ACHS_DEF command selects the axes which are currently available
in the process. For a description of the command, see the above chapter
1.3, Chamfering and Rounding.

DOK-MTC200-NC*COMP*V23-FK01-EN-P
NC Compiler NC Compiler 1-15

Contiguous motion blocks Within the to be optimized program sequence, may only those NC blocks
exist, which contain G1,G2 and G3 movements, event instructions (SE,RE),
speed definitions (F), acceleration limits (ACC_EFF) and quick assisting
function outputs (MQxxx, QQxxx ans Sxxxxx.xx, if S was parameterized as
a quick assisting function).

No variables The end points may not be determined by variables in those NC blocks in
which the speed profile is to process the look-ahead function.

Tool administration The tool change, including the pertaining T function and the cutter
selection, is to be performed before the enhanced look-ahead function is
activated or after it has been deactivated.

Percentile path acceleration In certain program sequences and, if applicable, depending on the tool or
compensation the workpiece weight, the resulting path acceleration must be reduced.

Using
ACC_EFF ;change effective resulting path acceleration

permits the effective resulting path acceleration to be changed. This

acceleration factor ranges from 1% to 200%.

Note: Contrary to the command ACC, the command ACC_EFF does

not limit the maximum path acceleration specified by process
parameters. It modifies the actual path acceleration according
to the specification.

Axis-related velocities Besides programming the path velocity via the F value, axis velocities may
also be programmed during the look-ahead function.
To specify an axis velocity, the F must immediately (without a blank) be
followed by the axis name.
Syntax: F<axis name>=<axis velocity in mm/min>
Example: :
N0045 G01 X 2034 Z1 421 FZ1=4500 ;axis-related velocity
for Z1:

Note: If the user programs several velocities within a NC block, that

NC block and the subsequent NC blocks are executed with the
last velocity which has been specified until the next velocity in-
struction is received.

Access to current data The command ccess to current data ACD_COMP[...] permits access to
in the controller current controller data (currently only NC variables) during compilation.

Example: Reading the tool radius during compilation

After each dressing of the grinding wheel, a dressing program updates the
half diameter of the wheel in the NC variable @1:120. On compiling, this
value is to be taken into account as the tool radius.
TL_RADIUS[1,1] = ACD_COMP[@1:120]-0,2; Take over the tool radius
from the NC variable
@1:120 and deduct 0.2
mm.

Notes In reverse programs, the LA_OFF command must be programmed

when the LA_ON command is used.
The compiler does not take into account any velocity changes of the
axes that are caused by a rotation of the contour.

1.7 Bosch Rexroth Compiler

Tasks of the The Bosch Rexroth Compiler
Bosch Rexroth compilers
searches the NC source program for the above keywords in
accordance with the respective compiler settings,
checks whether all required marginal conditions are met,
remembers new
macro and
modal definitions, and
inserts the programmed
macro instructions,
modal instructions,
chamfers and roundings, and
performs the defined path velocity optimization.

Compiler settings The Bosch Rexroth compiler can be activated and de-activated in the NC
editor in the Extras/Compiler settings menu item. As the GUI calls up
the Bosch Rexroth compiler only during a download process, this
compiler setting is significant for all former applications, above all
considering the time aspect. If you do not require the above mentioned
compiler functions, the Bosch Rexroth compiler should not be activated.
The default setting does not activate the compiler.

Note: If one of the above keywords is present in the NC program,

and if the compiler has been de-activated, the controller on
download will generate an error message at the respective
location.

After a modification to the machine parameters, the

NC programs must be invalidated before being
processed. After re-compilation, they can be
loaded into the controller!
CAUTION

Status bits The GUI shows the following status bits in the parts program directories:

Symbol Designation Comment

The NC program does not require
compilation.
N not compiled The NC program has not yet been compiled.
C compiled The NC program has already been compiled
successfully.
Note: A syntax check
has not been made yet.
(It will be made on download
into the controller.)
E error An error occurred during compilation of the
NC program.

Call-up of the When downloading an NC program/cycles, the GUI automatically calls

Bosch Rexroth compilers up the Bosch Rexroth compiler for each NC program to be
transmitted, if this is necessary.

NC Compiler User Compiler (Option) 2-1

2 User Compiler (Option)

General notes By means of user compilers, the machine manufacturer can integrate its
own know-how into the controller. In this manner, specific functions of the
machine manufacturers technology can be realized, e.g. pre-collision
checks, program generators, circles with a diameter of several kilometers,
ellipses, or mathematical functions of any kind.

For developing a user compiler, there is a template project and a

description of the procedure (Compiler Development Documentation).

Note: A license is required for the user compiler.

Entry of a user compiler Before and after the Bosch Rexroth compiler, the user can insert a
maximum of two user compilers each in the NC editor in the
Extras/Compiler settings menu item. To this effect, the respective DLL
designation must be entered at the required location:
User compiler ...... . ...
User compiler 2 ...... . ...
Bosch Rexroth compiler
User compiler 3 ...... . ...
User compiler 4 ...... . ...
Syntax check

Note: If the machine manufacturer inserts a user compiler before the

Bosch Rexroth compiler, the compiler in question will find the
unchanged NC program because of the call-up sequence. If,
on the contrary, a user compiler is inserted after the Bosch
Rexroth compiler, the keywords have already been evaluated;
this means for example that macros have already been
resolved.

Preconditions for running the The GUI only calls up the Bosch Rexroth compiler for an NC program if
compiler all the following conditions are met:
Download of an NC program or cycles has been commanded,
The compiler setting Compiler has been activated in the NC editor in
the Extras/Compiler settings menu item,
At least one of the keywords or macros has been programmed or
modified in the respective program,
The program has been newly created or edited, and
The program has not been compiled yet (status bit N in the parts
program directory).
At each download of NC program or cycles, the GUI will call up the user
compilers entered by the machine manufacturer by defining the program
designation and by activation of the compilers. The GUI will also call up
the user compilers if there are no Bosch Rexroth keywords within the
respective NC program.

2-2 User Compiler (Option) NC Compiler

Directory The compiler is to be saved to the ...\Indramat\MTGUI\BIN directory in

the form of a DLL file.

Controlling The compiler call-ups are controlled by means of the Files Download.ini in
the compiler call-ups the ...\Indramat\MTGUI\Project_000\CustomData\Resource directory.
