Haywards Heath’s 9 hole course was opened in 1922, the product of an enthusiastic local community
and the imagination of the legendary master golfer of the era, James Braid.
Many changes have occurred over the years, of course, and our current design advisor is Tom Mackenzie of Mackenzie & Ebert who
previously worked with Donald Steele and Company. The outcome of over eighty years of golfing history is a 6,216 yard layout that
demands accuracy and judgement rather than power although on certain holes long hitters might have an edge!

And along the way, as Walter Hagen declared,“Smell the Roses”. Picturesque, beautifully tree lined and well maintained are qualities
that not all courses offer. Haywards Heath does. There are some testing elevation changes and views of the Weald and South Downs
that are worth a moment’s pause before teeing up.

We continually strive to improve our course and believe it offers a pleasing blend of sheer golfing challenge and pure enjoyment.

 The Early Years
In the years immediately following the First World War, Haywards Heath was little more than a sleepy
market town with a population of 5,090. Good rail links to London, however, started to attract an
influx of new residents – city workers who wanted the benefits of living in the countryside yet easy
access to the City.
Horace Finch, a local businessman, recognised the need to provide better leisure facilities. Haywards Heath Golf Club was born
when Finch bought Round Wood, some surrounding grazing land and two 18th century barns which rejoiced in the name of Fatting
Hovel! The barns became the Clubhouse and a nine hole course was laid out with the help of Major I G H Stenborough, a keen
amateur golfer.

The Club was officially opened on Saturday 27th May 1922. The annual membership subscription then was six guineas (£6.30).

But, quite soon, nine holes were clearly not enough!

James Braid, five times winner of the Open Championship and a renowned golf course architect,
was called in to advise on the extension of the course.
Additional land beyond the ridge beside the present 16th hole was leased from Col G H Stephenson Clarke, owner of the nearby
Borde Hill estate although the estate retained hunting and shooting rights on the land! More extra space was obtained by renting
a small plot of land to create the present 5th green from Lord Denman’s Balcombe estate. Although horses and carts were
used to move the earth, all the extension work was done by hand!

The new 18 hole course was opened on 3rd June 1924 when James Braid played in a fourball exhibition match with the famous
Harry Varden as his partner against the club professional, George Stephenson, and Herbert Risborough, the club professional from
Littlehampton Golf Club. The latter pair returned a better ball score of 68, a close finish to the 66 recorded by the two stars.

Through the War Years…
In order to have more say in the running of the Club, members decided to buy it from Horace
Finch in 1927. Haywards Heath Golf Club Limited (HHGC Ltd) was set up, financed by the issue
of shares and debentures to members, and £7,500 was agreed for the Clubhouse and land
originally owned by Finch. Col Stephenson Clarke and Lord Denman agreed to extend the leases
on their land.

Although membership rose steadily through the 1930s and after the end of World War ll, the Club’s finances remained on a knife
edge right up to the 1960s. Fortunately, sympathetic landlords came to the rescue – Lady Denman offered cash for urgent expenses
and, on occasion, agreed to forego rent while Col Stephenson Clarke also provided cash aid and rent reduction. Sir Henry Price of
Wakehurst Place also made loans and donations to cover the Club’s deficiencies.

Through the War Years
During World War ll, part of the course had to be ploughed up for agricultural use. By 1942 only ten
holes were still in play. After the War, German PoWs were employed to restore the course between
1946 and 1948.
By the 1960s, the Club’s accounts began to show some profit. Debentures issued in the early days were redeemed and by 1967
there was sufficient capital for the Club to take the significant step of acquiring the area of the course previously leased from Col
Stephenson Clarke’s Borde Hill estate.

In 1974, the present members’ club, Haywards Heath Golf Club, was formed, leasing the land and
buildings from HHGC Ltd in 1975. We are now into our third lease. In 1980 the Club was able to
buy additional land from the Borde Hill estate to create what is now the 8th hole.
Former Ryder Cup player, Bill Cox, handled the redesign of the course and construction of new holes and greens. A completely new
hole, the current 8th, was created and the 11th, 12th and 13th holes were lengthened and redesigned.

The Club to Date
The new and revised course was formally brought into play in 1982 with a Charity Pro-Am Tournament.
Sparks, the sportsman’s charity, provided a strong showbiz contingent and the event raised more
than £5,000.
The Club has continued to increase its land ownership with the purchase of the freehold of the land encompassing the 5th green
and 6th tee from the Denman estate in 1997 and in 1998 it purchased 13.5 acres to the south of the 8th green which is being
held in reserve for future development.

 Membership
We are a members’ club and very clear about what we seek to maintain and achieve for our
members and their guests.
Our golfing calendar has something for everyone, whether you are an accomplished golfer or casual player. We have testing monthly
competitions both weekend and mid-week, fourballs and foursomes, mixed events, informal roll-ups or just come and play any
time – no pre-booking required. Our Ladies, Men’s, Senior and Junior sections are all very active.

If your aim is to improve your game, few clubs in the South East can offer more. The Michael Henning Golf Academy has six PGA
professionals, including a lady pro, to help you, a high-tech digital imaging performance and coaching studio, a 260 yard all
weather driving range and two chipping and short game practice areas.

At Haywards Heath, the social aspects are also very important to us. These include informal Friday evening suppers (frequently
with professional entertainment), après golf dinners following our very popular mixed golf events and, of course, all the great
seasonal functions. We take great pride in our reputation as a truly friendly club.

We also have a strong interest in giving something back. The Captains’ Charity receives excellent
support from members and raises several thousands annually for the chosen charity.
Our charming Clubhouse offers “The Barn” dining room, a bright and spacious lounge and our more casual bar area where
members and guests can gather to describe “the putt that got away”! A major extension and refurbishment programme
costing half a million pounds was completed in 2003 to improve the capacity of the Clubhouse for the busy programme of
social events. Guest dining, bar snacks and a comprehensive drinks selection are also available.

we are strongly represented in
County events
Men:- The 400 members have a full golfing and social calendar. W,e are strongly represented in County events, the highlight of
each year being the SCGU Scratch PAV Trophy which we won in 2003 and held the Plate in 2009. We also participate in the
Mid Sussex League with four other clubs – Pyecombe, Worthing, Ifield and Copthorne – with all members of Haywards Heath
benefitting as a result from reciprocal reduced green fees at each of the other clubs throughout the year.

Ladies:- With around 140 lady members, this is an active, sociable and friendly group in the Club which competes well in
County competitions and has a full playing calendar mainly taking place on Tuesdays.

Juniors:- Made up of over 70 boys and girls, this is an active and enthusiastic division of the Club with appointed dedicated
organisers. Several juniors have gone on to develop careers as professionals in recent years and our juniors organised into age
groups for competitions, are also well represented in appropriate County events. Michael Henning’s Golf Academy, provides a
dedicated junior coaching programme.

Seniors: - A 90 strong, active and involved group in the Club. There are no formalities involved in joining the seniors if aged over 55
and retired from working. The Seniors enjoy a full programme of competitions and events with around 20 other Sussex clubs.

Mixed Golf:- Mixed events play an important part in the Club’s life and are very well supported with most games played

‘‘
Whether you choose to play as an individual, with a group of friends or as a member of a Society,
we want you to have an enjoyable time both on the course and in the Clubhouse.
Playing members may introduce up to three guests at a time at the reduced green fee provided they play with their guests.
Each guest may play the course up to six times a year at the reduced rate. Juniors may also play as guests if they hold valid
handicaps.

The Club hosts numerous Golf Societies, many of whom come back year after year. Society days are generally, though not
exclusively, a Wednesday and a Thursday. The standard Society package consists of either two rounds of golf (9 or 18 holes) or
one round of 18 holes, either morning or afternoon.

On joining our Academy you will be tutored and mentored individually by one of our six-strong team. Once assessed as ready to
take to the course, you will be able to take advantage of the twenty free 9 hole rounds of golf available at off-peak times. And games
with other Academy members and competitions will be arranged during your Academy year. You will gain a well founded and solid
basis to your golf game and on completion of your Academy year, the opportunity awaits for you to apply and join our successful
and welcoming Club.

As well individual coaching, Michael Henning Golf also organises group training for specific categories such as beginners, juniors
and ladies.
