OUR COMMUNITY LIBRARY
IS TO STAY OPEN
UNTIL AT LEAST 30 JUNE 2018!
At the City of Greater Geelong Council meeting on 27 June the
Administrators resolved that Barwon Heads, Chilwell and Highton
libraries continue to operate until at least 30 June 2018.
Council will review its Social Infrastructure Plan which will
determine the service requirements and models of service delivery
at the local, district and regional levels across Greater Geelong
including the role of libraries.
There will be broad community participation in this review. A
progress report of the review will be presented to Council by March
2018 so that it can be considered in the new Councils 4 year Plan..
We will follow this process closely and will continue to engage with
the Library Corporation and the City of Greater Geelong to ensure
that our communitys views are known and that our library remains
open in the years ahead. Cont. Page 6

SAVE BARWON HEADS

Save Barwon Heads Alliance (SBHA) would like to thank our committed community for the exceptional response to the call for
submissions to the Draft Barwon Heads Structure Plan.
SBHA received 970 submissions from our members and supporters which we hand delivered to the City of Greater Geelong
(COGG) Planners on Friday 23rd June. The overwhelming community support to retain the settlement boundary and to preserve
the surrounding environment should go a long way to convince the Administrators and future COGG Councillors of the Barwon
Heads community's opinion on this matter.
This is the first stage of what could be another 12 months of deliberation at local and state level to finalise the Barwon Heads
Structure Plan. COGG Planners will review all submissions, present an updated draft to Administrators/COGG Councillors this
year and then COGG will refer the Plan to the Plan to the Victorian Planning Panel. A Panel Hearing will then be scheduled
which will include the opportunity to make a further submission/presentation. The timeline for the next phase of submissions
and the Victorian Planning Panel Hearing could be early to mid 2018. SBHA will keep the community updated over the coming
months in Talking Heads and via our website and facebook page on the timeline.

In the next few months we will be preparing for the Panel Hearing and have engaged environmental and ground water experts
to further investigate key elements of the sensitive coastal wetlands and surrounding environment. In addition, we will be
briefing our legal team to prepare for at least a weeks hearing at the Planning Panel in 2018. These two key activities requires
further community support by way of donation to fund the preparation and attendance at the Panel hearing by our two expert
groups. All donations received will only go this necessary step in the planning process. The SBHA Executive invite all the
Barwon Heads community and the SBHA members to contribute meaningfully to raise funds for the next stage of the planning
process to ensure we maintain the boundary and environment around Barwon Heads. Your financial contribution will make a
difference and we are asking each SBHA member to give $50 or more as a once off payment. To make a donation online: NAB

SBHA wish to acknowledge the quality and continuity of strategic planning by government over the past 21 years. With each

Barwon Heads Community Arts Garden

What's happening at the Gardens:
Well winter has certainly now paid a visit after some lovely Autumn/early Winter days but the garden is still looking
really good for this time of the year. Plots are filled with freshly planted seedlings, broccoli is sprouting, garlic and
onions are springing away nicely and all our pumpkins have been picked and shared amongst members.
Winter Solstice Day was celebrated on Wednesday June 21st with our fires burning brightly and candles adding a nice glow
to the gardens. We had a really good turn up of people and children and being a cool, but still night, it was most
pleasant to rug up, warm our toes around the fire in the citrus circle and toast marshmallows on sticks. As usual we
shared an abundance of different foods and started off with a yummy Thai style pumpkin soup made by Deb with
pumpkins grown at the gardens and flavoured with some pickings of Kaffir lime leaves, garlic, lemongrass, ginger and
other ingredients. After soup, hot savouries and other delicious choices, we were treated to an array of lovely desserts.
Rhubarb cake made by Sara using rhubarb from the gardens, an orange cake with our home grown oranges, a lime
cheesecake and a delicious chocolate cake. It is nights like this when you reflect on how lucky we are to be sitting
Jason ONeill
staring into the glowing fire in our lovely garden setting sharing good food and friendship with our fellow gardeners and
friends. It was a real treat for a Winter's night.
What keeps our gardens looking so attractive?
As anyone who is a gardener knows it takes a lot of hard work and effort to maintain and keep on improving a garden.
As enjoyable as it is, time is required to keep the Barwon Heads Community Arts Garden looking at its best and to
produce the best possible results, as well as making it a lovely place for people to visit.
Our plotholders and members do a terrific job attending monthly working bees to maintain the various areas of the
garden and carry out regular maintenance of the facilities. Plotties maintain their individual plots at other times
outside working bees. A group of our dedicated members have recently painted and refurbished our Garden Room
(the old school portable) - I love the red painted door done by Colin
New projects are always on the drawing board to keep improving out Garden we are not ones to rest on our laurels so
to speak!
But sorry to say:
That unfortunately plotholders have been losing some of their produce over the last couple of months. From whole
trees in the general garden area being stripped of ripe fruit through to vegetables being taken from individual
plots. It is a shame that the hard work of garden members is being taken advantage of in this way. All produce
that is grown in the garden is for the use of paid up garden members and if you would like to join, forms can be
found on www.bhartsgarden.com or send an email to info@bartsgarden.com

Selmo Carriera & Rita Lorga promised us a special program for our

BHFMS
June concert & they certainly delivered one to our enraptured
audience! The long weekend is always busy so we were very pleased
to be well supported! Rita introduced the first item &, in spite of a
French themed repertoire, began with solo violin from early works of
J.S.Bach (1685-1750) Partita no.3 in E Major: Loure; Gavotte en
Rondeau, a lively & familiar movement.
Selmo began with a piano solo by Claude Debussy(1862-1918) & chose
Prelude V 2nd book: Breyeres & he explained how it gave an atmospheric
picture of flowers, like Lavender, blooming over the hills in early Spring,
transporting the view through the music which was a lovely image! The next
item was Reverie, another piece by Debussy, & arranged for violin & piano by
A. Bachman & the title inspires the chance for dreams.
The Fantasie for Violin & Piano no.2 Cancao Sem Palavras (Song Without
Words) by E. Carrapatoso was next. He holds a special connection for Rita as
he was one of her teachers & he sent this piece to her so this performance of
the second movement, Lento, was the premiere performance in Australia! He
is a prolific National composer of Chamber & Chorale music from 1960 & has
won quite a few awards. It is an interesting fact that he comes from an area
north of Lisbon which is a beautiful region where they speak a unique dialect
which is very difficult to understand!
Villa-Lobos (1887-1959), a Brazilian, is most recognised in Portugal & lived in
Paris where he won a prize. Valsa da Dor (Waltz of Sorrow) was a moving solo
for Selmo.
The most beautiful version imaginable of Claire de Lune was then performed
by Selmo & Rita! A favourite piano piece from Suite Bergamesque by Claude
Debussy, arranged by J. Laroque for piano & violin, was an absolutely stunning
performance, thrilling all those present! The Tango pour Claude by R.Galliano
arranged for violin & piano by R.Sousa & S.Carreira brought their concert to a
lively conclusion. Once again, a thoroughly delightful & well themed recital from
a very talented young couple, left us very happy & content with our special
musical afternoon!
Our next Sunday concert is Winter Jazz in July & will be featuring the
fabulous Sandra Talty Swing Quartet on Sunday, 9th July, 2017 at the 13th

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

July is our birthday month we are 81 years young and still going
strong. The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade was officially formed on 1
July 1936 with 15 members. Today we have 28 volunteers, 23 of whom are
operational. Our members range in age from the late teens and early 20's to
late 60's and early 70's. We represent all walks of life and bring different
backgrounds, skills, views and experience to the Brigade.
The one common denominator is that we have joined the Brigade because we believe it is important to give back
to the Barwon Heads community.
We are always keen to welcome new members to our Brigade so we thought we'd share some insights about
what it's like to be a member.
1) What is involved in becoming a member?
First, we invite any prospective members to come along to the Station on a Sunday morning (9am) for a few
weeks so you can meet some of the members and get a sense of who we are. It's also a chance for us to get to
know you. You will then fill in a form to apply to become a member of the CFA and your training begins. Brigade
members will also vote on your application so you become a member of the Fire Brigade itself. There is a
probationary period of 6 months.

2) What training is offered?

Training starts with an induction into the Brigade and then moves on to familiarisation with our appliances (fire
trucks), learning skills such as bowling and connecting a hose to a fire hydrant, squirting water on a fire and
drafting water into the tanker. One of our experienced members is the Training Officer and he will take you
through a check list of skills that you need to learn. Concurrently, you will undertake the Minimal Skills course run
by the CFA, which contains the theory part of the program. Once you have reached a level of competency in the
practical skills you will be assessed by a CFA accredited training officer
Once you have passed the Minimal Skills tests you are qualified to be on a fire ground and help fight bushfires and
grassfires. You can also start turning out to local incidents.
There are many skill based courses you can complete over your time as a CFA volunteer it really is up to you as to
which direction you'd like to go. At a minimum though you will likely complete Minimum Skills (grass, scrub and

(including bushfires) and be allowed on the fire ground. s Repairs, upgrades and new computers
3) How often am I expected to turn out? s Expert and qualified tuition
We have a saying at CFA Family first, work second, then CFA. There are no expectations on how often you turn out, it s Data protection & backup
really is up to you. However, turning out ensure your skills are kept up to date and fresh.
s Internet and web
We meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 7.45pm and collectively make decisions on aspects of Brigade s Anti-virus
operations. We also attend the Station on Sunday mornings from 9am for chores and training, and training is held on s Intel server specialists
the first and last Tuesday of every month.
s Network & phone cabling
4) What are the other benefits to being a member? s IT planning & policy for business
Many CFA members talk about the strong support you gain and the friends you make for life when you become a
member. The CFA family is diverse and broad, however the common unifier of protecting our community creates an 50 CARR STREET BARWON HEADS

MIDWEEK LADIES PREMIERSHIP by Maz McIntosh

It's hard to explain the feeling of winning a grand final! It doesn't matter if it's the AFL, local footy, local netball or Section 9
Midweek Ladies tennis.

On June 13th, Section 9 ladies tennis pulled off a second consecutive grand final win. On the day, our team was mentored by
Janet Agg who was very keen to ' bring home the silverware'.
As our opposition , Clifton Springs warmed up on the adjoining courts, Janet suggested we stand in a group huddle for a team
meeting tips such as 'just hit it to her backhand', 'every game counts' etc were taken on board by team mates Kim Pate
(captain) Sue Rawling (holiday Princess) and Maz McIntosh. Our emergency Sally Jackson was close by if needed.

The supporters were awesome, cheering us to victory which inevitably came!

A great night of celebration, awards, friendship and laughter followed at Hanoi Kitchen. Section 8 girls were successful in
reaching the Grand Final but did not win on this occasion.
Next season commences on Tuesday July 20th if you are considering joining us! Ring Maz on 0409405044
