Summary
The article examines the treatment by the Ottoman authorities and by the diplomacy of
Great Britain, Russia and France of the questions of number of Western Armenians and
the ethnic composition of the population of the six vilayets of Western Armenia during
the period of aggravation of the Armenian question and the Middle East crisis in the
mid-1990s.
The key statistical data on the number of Western Armenians and the ethnic
composition of the population of Western Armenia, compiled in the mid-1890s by the
above-mentioned actors in the context of the negotiations over the Armenian question,
are presented and analyzed.
