EasternChampionshipGamesin1913.ThePhilippinesdefeatedChinain
whatwasthefirstinternationalgameinAsia.ThePhilippineswonallbut
one(1921)championshipuntil1934.Thegameswerenotunderthe
supervisionofFIBAastheorganizationwasfoundedin1932.

TheBasketballAssociationofthePhilippines(BAP)wasfoundedin1936,
andbecameapartofFIBAlaterthatyear.Alsointhesameyear,theBAP
sentateamnicknamed"theIslanders"thatparticipatedinthefirstOlympic ThePhilippinenationalteam
basketballtournamentinBerlin.Withthetournamentunderasingle competingagainstChinaatthe1917
eliminationroundformatfromthethirdgameonwards,thePhilippineswon FarEasternGamesinTokyo.

Inthe1950s1960s,thePhilippineswasamongthebestintheworld,
producingworldclassplayerslikeCarlosLoyzaga,LauroMumar,Mariano
Tolentino,FranciscoRabatandEdgardoOcampo.In1951,teamwonthe
inauguralAsianGamesbasketballtournamentinNewDelhi,India.The
teamfinishedaheadofJapanandfourotherteamstowinthegoldmedal.
OnthenextAsianGamesin1954inManilathatservedasaqualifiersfor
theWorldChampionshiplaterthatyear,theteamfinishedfirstanew,
beatingouttheRepublicofChina(Taiwan),JapanandSouthKoreainthe
finalround.

In1954FIBAWorldChampionshipinBrazil,Loyzagawasapartofthe SummerOlympics
MythicalTeamselection,wherethePhilippineswonthebronzemedal.The
PhilippinesfinishedsecondintheirgroupbehindBrazilandaheadofParaguaytoenterthefinalround,wherethe
teamlostagainsttheUSAbyonly13pointsonlythelossagainsttheUSAandtwolossesagainstBrazilwerethe
Philippines'onlylossesintheworldchampionship.Todate,thePhilippines'performanceremainsthebest
performancebyanAsianteamintheWorldChampionship.

Inthe1956Olympics,thePhilippinesfinishedseventh.Theteamqualifiedtothequarterfinals,withonlyloss
againsttheUSA.However,theteamlostalloftheirgamesagainstFrance,UruguayandChileinthequarterfinals.
ThePhilippinesdefeatedChileintheseventhplacegametofinishwitha44record.Twoyearslater,inthe1958
AsianGamesinTokyo,thePhilippineswonitsthirdconsecutivegoldmedal,finishingfirstinthefinalround.

ThePhilippineswasgroupedwithBulgaria,PuertoRicoandUruguayinthe1959FIBAWorldChampionship.
Theteamfinishedthird,losingagainstBulgariaandPuertoRico,tocrashoutofthefinalround.ThePhilippines
wonallofthegamesintheclassificationroundagainsttheUnitedArabRepublic(Egypt)andCanadatomeet
Uruguayfortheeighthplacegame.TheteamdefeatedUruguayagaintofinisheighth.Thiswouldbethelast
tournamentofLoyzagaandcompany.

BirthoftheAsianchampionships

Startingin1960,theAsianBasketballChampionshipwasheldtodetermineAsia'sparticipantsintheOlympics
andtheWorldChampionships.QualifyingfortheAsianChampionshipwasbysubzone,orbytherankinginthe
mostrecenttournamentinthiscase,withthePhilippinesbeingthestrongestteaminSoutheastAsia,thecountry
willqualifyeasilyforthecontinentalchampionship,eveniftheyfailedtoqualifyviarankingsfromtheprevious
tournament.TheinauguralAsianChampionshipwasheldinManila.

WithanAsianChampionship,thePhilippinesqualifiedforthe1960Olympics.InRome,thePhilippinesdidnot
qualifyforthemedalround,butdidbeatSpaininthepreliminaries,ultimatelyfinishing11thoutof16nations.The
countrywassupposedtohostthe1963WorldChampionship,butPresidentDiosdadoMacapagalrefusedtoallow
playersfromYugoslaviaandothercommunistcountriestoenterthecountry.ThiscausedthePhilippines,despite
winningtheAsianChampionships,toqualifyviaapreOlympictournament,inwhichtheywereunsuccessful.[2]

InthefifthchampionshipatBangkok,thePhilippinesfinishedthird,afteraonepointlossagainstJapan,andan
8695lossagainstSouthKorea.

CreationofthePhilippineBasketballAssociation

In1975,afterdisputeswiththeBasketballAssociationofthePhilippines(BAP),nineteamspulledoutofBAP's
jurisdictionandfoundedtheprofessionalPhilippineBasketballAssociation(PBA),takingalongallthebest
playerswiththem.ThiscausedtheBAPtosendweakenedteamsinthesubsequentinternationaltournaments,as
professionalsarenotallowedtoplay.TheFilipinostofailtodefendtheirAsianchampionshipin1975,withIndia

earningashockblowoutwintodenythePhilippinesatop4finish.TheChinesewonthechampionship,beginning
theirunbeatenchampionshiprunthatwilllastinto1983.Thenationalsweredeniedofatop4finishinthe1977
AsianChampionship,losingthistimetoMalaysia.ThePhilippinesthenhostedthe1978FIBAWorld
Championship,losingallofthegamesviablowoutstofinishlastinthefinalround.

TheNCCprogram(19801986)

TooffsetthelossofplayersofthePBA,theBAPdelegatedtobusinessmanEduardoCojuangco,Jr.theformation
ofateamthatwilltraintogetherforseveralmonths,inessence,aclubteamunaffiliatedwithanyleague.The
resultwastheNorthernCementbasketballteamcoachedbytheAmericanRonJacobsthathadfournaturalized
players.Inthe1982AsianGamesinNewDelhi,theteamfinishedfourthbehindKorea,ChinaandJapan.Inthe
1983AsianChampionshipinHongKong,thePhilippinesforfeitedtheirpreliminaryroundgamesaftera
misunderstandingintherulesthatcausedthePhilippinestoplaymorethanonenaturalizedplayeronthefloorat
thetime.ThePhilippines,withouttheirnaturalizedplayers,madeshortworkoftheclassificationroundtofinishin
ninthplace.TheNorthernCementteamwonthe1985AsianChampionshipinKualaLumpur,toqualifyforthe
1986FIBAWorldChampionshipinSpain.

OnFebruary22,1986,thePeoplePowerRevolutioneruptedandforcedpresidentFerdinandMarcosintoexile.
Cojuangco,aknownallyofMarcos,alsoleftthecountry,causingtheteamnottoparticipateintheWorld
Championship.Theteamdidparticipateinthe1986AsianGames,finishingthirdbehindChinaandKorea.

Professionalera

In1989,FIBAallowedprofessionalstoplayintheirtournaments.ThiscausedtheBAPtohaveanagreementwith
thePBAinwhichthelatterwillformnationalteamsfortheAsianGames,whiletheformerwilldosoinother
tournaments.Inthe1989SoutheastAsianGames,theBAPsponsoredteamsufferedashocklosstoMalaysiain
thegoldmedalgame,theonlytimethePhilippinesfailedtowinthegoldmedalattheSoutheastAsianGamesin
whichbasketballwasplayed.

In1990,thePhilippinessentanallpronationalteam,coachedbyRobertJaworski,toregainthecountry's
basketballsupremacyintheAsianGamesbuttheteamlostinthefinalagainstChinaandsettledforasilvermedal.
Theteamincludes1990PBAMostValuablePlayerAllanCaidicandSamboyLim,whowerebothselectedinthe
AsianGamesMythicalFiveSelections.

Inthe1991AsianChampionshipinKobe,Japan,thePhilippinesfinishedsecondintheirpreliminaryroundgroup
behindChina,butalossagainstJapancausedtheirelimination,endingupinseventhplace,whenJordanforfeited
thegame.In1993,thePhilippinesfailedtoqualifyinthequarterfinalgroups,sufferinglossesagainstKorea(five
points)andtheUAE(fourpoints)enroutetoan11thplacefinish.

Inthe1994AsianGamesinHiroshima,thePhilippines,coachedbytheAmericanNormanBlack,sentinateam
composedofPBAplayersandselectedamateurs.Theteamfinishsecondinthepreliminaryround,losingto
Korea.ThelosstoKoreameantthatthePhilippineshastofaceChinadespitelosing,theChinesehadtheir
slimmestwinningmargininthetournamentwithninepoints,enroutetotheirgoldmedal.ThePhilippineswere
upendedbythehostsJapaninthebronzemedalgame,losingbythreepointsinovertime.

WithnoPBAplayersontheroster,theteamonthe1995AsianChampionshipinSeoulfinishedlastinthe
preliminaryround,butmanagedtowintwogamesintheclassificationroundtofinish12thoutof19teams.The
teamthatwenttoRiyadhfortheABCChampionship1997didonlymarginallybettertheystillfinishedlastinthe
preliminaryroundbuttoppedtheclassificationroundgroupenroutetoaninthplacefinish.

In1998,thePBAformedthePhilippineCentennialTeamcoachedbytheAmericanTimConethatcapturedthe
21stWilliamJonesCupchampionshipbutfinishedwiththebronzemedalinthe1998AsianGamesheldin
Bangkok.TheFilipinosfacedtheiroldnemesisKoreainthequarterfinalsandwereblownoutbytwentypoints,
whichledthemtofaceChinainthesemifinalsanew.Theresultwouldbethesameasfouryearsearlier,withthe
Chinesewinningbynine.TheFilipinoswonthebronzemedalgamethough,againstKazakhstan.

Inthe1999AsianChampionshipinFukuoka,Japan,thePhilippines,withnoPBAplayersontheirroster,finished
lastinthepreliminaryround,andsecondintheclassificationroundtofinish11thoutof15teams.InShanghaifor
the2001AsianChampionship,thePhilippineswassuspendedbyFIBAduetoleadershipdisputesattheBAP.This
causedthecountrytomisstheirfirstAsianchampionship.By2002,acompromisewassortedout,andthe
Philippineswasallowedtoparticipateinthe2002AsianGames,coachedbyJongUichico.

InBusan,SouthKorea,thePhilippineseasilyqualifiedforthequarterfinals,inwhichtheyaregroupedwithChina,
JapanandChineseTaipei.ThePhilippineswonbyfivepointsagainstJapan,and14pointsagainstChineseTaipei.
ThegameagainstChinawasn'tasclose,withthePhilippineslosingby41points,butthisassuredthattheywon't
havetofaceChinainthesemifinals.Forthethirdconsecutivetime,theFilipinosandKoreansfacedinthe
semifinals,withthesameresult:theKoreanswonoverthePhilippines,thistimebyonepoint.Upbytwopoints,
OlsenRacelamissedtwofreethrows,thatledtoaKoreanthreepointeratthebuzzertoeliminatetheFilipinos.
TheteamwouldloseinthebronzemedalgameagainstKazakhstanby2pointsasKoreadefeatedChinain
overtimebyabaskettowinAsianGamesgoldforthefirsttimesince1970.

WithnoPBAplayersintheroster,the2003AsianChampionshipinHarbinwastheworstperformancebytheteam
inhistory:a15thplacefinishoutof16teams.Unlikein1997and1999,thePhilippineshadonewininthe
preliminaryround(againstJordan).However,intheclassificationround,thePhilippinesemergedwinlessina
groupcontainingSyria,KuwaitandHongKong.OnlyablowoutwinagainstMalaysiasavedthePhilippinesfrom
droppingtothecellar.Afterthechampionship,BAPwasheavilycriticizedandtookstepstostrengthentheteam.
However,afteralossagainsttheParaaqueJets,ateamcomposedofpoliticians,actorsandamateurs,bytheBAP
managedteam,anotherleadershipcrisisintheBAPensuedwhichcausedanothersuspensionfromFIBA.Asa
result,thePhilippineswasnotabletoparticipateintheFIBAAsiaChampionship2005andthe2006AsianGames.

AftertheconclusionoftheleadershipstrugglethatsawtheSamahangBasketbolngPilipinas(SBP),an
organizationbackedbythePBAamongothers,beingrecognizedbybothFIBAandthePhilippineOlympic
Committee,thePhilippineswasreinstatedbyFIBA.SanMiguelTeamPilipinaswashastilyassembledforthe
2007FIBAAsiaChampionshipinTokushima.TheteamdefeatedChina,whichdidn'tsenditsbestteamsincethey
alreadyqualifiedforthe2008Olympics,butlosttoIranandJordantobowoutofcontention.TheFilipinosand
ChinesemetagainfortheninthplacegameinwhichtheFilipinoswonbytwopoints.ThePhilippinesqualifiedfor
the2009FIBAAsiaChampionshipinTianjin.ThePhilippinesadvancedtothequarterfinalstomeetJordan.The
JordaniansracedtoanyearlyleadwheretheFilipinosneverrecoveredtowinthegame.TheFilipinosandthe
Koreansplayedforseventhplace,whichsawtheKoreanswinningbytwopoints.

GilasPilipinas(2010present)

FollowingtheNorthernCementmodelofthe1980,theSBPestablishedtheSmartGilasPilipinasprogram,backed
bySBPPresidentManuelV.Pangilinan,asadevelopmentalteamthataimstoqualifyinthe2012Olympics.Inthe
2010AsianGames,theFilipinosmettheKoreanteamanewinthequarterfinalsandwaseliminated.Inthe2011
championshipatWuhan,theSBPsuccessfullypetitionedthenaturalizationofMarcusDouthittheteam
progresseduptothesemifinalsforthefirsttimesince1987.MeetingJordan,theteamlost,neverrecoveringaftera

competitionsince2002.

AfterfailingtoqualifyfortheOlympics,theSBPdecidedtoformthenexteditionofSmartGilasPilipinasteam
(SmartGilasPilipinas2.0)composedofPBAplayers.TheSmartGilasPilipinasprogramwasrenamedGilas
Pilipinasin2013,stillsponsoredbySmartCommunications.AfterFIBAAsiadecidedtotransferhostingdutiesof
the2013FIBAAsiaChampionshiptothePhilippinesfromLebanon,theSBPdecidedtoholdmostofthegamesat
thenewlyconstructedMallofAsiaArena.AfterlosingtoChineseTaipeiinthelastgameofthepreliminaryround
tofinishsecond,theteamwonfourconsecutivegamestosetupasemifinalagainsttheKoreans.Inaclosegame,
thePhilippinespulledawaylateinthegametowin8679.Thewinsenttheteamtothefinalsandguaranteed
qualificationtotheFIBABasketballWorldCup(newnameoftheFIBAWorldChampionship)forthefirsttime
since1978.ThePhilippines,appearinginthefirstFIBAAsiaChampionshipfinalsincetheintroductionofa
championshipgamein1987,lostby14pointsagainstundefeatedIraninthefinaltosettleforasilvermedal.

Greece,ArgentinaandPuertoRico,beforewinninginovertime
againstSenegaltorecorditsfirstvictoryattheWorldCupin40
years.Inthe2014AsianGames,Blatchewasnotallowedbythe
OlympicCouncilofAsiatoparticipateduetoresidency
requirements.TheSBPusedDouthitanewasitsnaturalized
player,butthePhilippinesfinishedseventh,itsworstfinishinthe

OnOctober30,2014,theSBPannouncedtheformationoftwo Cup
selectioncommitteestosearchandappointthecoachandplayers
offuturePhilippineteamsforelitelevelandforyouthleveltournaments.[3][4][5][6]ChotReyesremainedcoach
untilareplacementwasdecided.[7]Thenewrosteraimstocompeteinthe2015FIBAAsiaChampionshipinChina
whichwillserveastheAsianqualifiersofthe2016SummerOlympicsBasketballtournamentinRiodeJaneiro.

BeforegamethreeofthePBAPhilippineCupFinalFourduelbetweenTalk'NTextandSanMiguelBeeron
December23,2014,theSamahangBasketbolngPilipinasformallyannouncedTabBaldwinasthenewcoachof
thePhilippinenationalteam.[8]Baldwin'sfouryeartenureascoachofficiallybeganonJanuary1,2015.[9]

Theteamcapturedthesilvermedalinthe2015WilliamJonesCup,thegoldin2015MVPCupbutfellshortofthe
goldmedalinthe2015FIBAAsiaChampionship.However,thePhilippinesqualifiedforthe2016FIBAWorld
OlympicQualifyingTournamentbuttheteamfailedintheirbidtoRioOlympicslosingtoFranceandNew
Zealand.Theteamwongoldduring2016SEABACupandaqualifyingslotinthe2016FIBAAsiaChallenge.
However,astheywererepresentedbytheGilasCadetswithnoprofessionalornaturalizeplayers,theteam
suffereditsworstperformanceplacing9thoverall,averyhugesetbackduetoconflictingschedulewiththe

In1963,FIBAsuspendedthePhilippinesforitsfailuretostagethe1963FIBAWorldChampionshipafter
PhilippinepresidentDiosdadoMacapagalrefusedtoallowplayersfromYugoslaviaandothercommunistcountries
toenterthecountry.Later,thePhilippines,despitebeingtheAsianchampion,wasforcedtoplayinapreOlympic
tournamentinordertoqualifyinthe1964SummerOlympics.[2]

TheleadershipcrisisintheBasketballAssociationofthePhilippines(BAP)worsenedafteralengthyfeudbetween
thegroupofGrahamLimandTinyLiteralandthegroupofFreddieJalascoandLitoPuyatwhichresultedinthe
suspensionoftheBAP.Afterafewmonths,FIBAintervenedandorderedanelectionwhichresultedinLiteral's
victoryasthepresidentoftheBAP.ThesuspensionwasquicklyliftedandthePhilippineswasabletocompetein
theSoutheastAsianGamesinMalaysia.[2]

ThePhilippineswasagainsuspendedonJuly2005afteralongstandingfeudbetweentheBAPandthePhilippine
OlympicCommittee(POC).

TheconflictbeganonApril10,2005,whentheBAPsponsoredCebuanaLhuillierPhilippineNationalteam
(composedoflittleknownamateurplayers)losttoalowlyParaaqueJetsteam(madeupofshowbizpersonalities)
inaNationalBasketballConference(NBC)preseasontournamentattheRizalMemorialColiseum.Uponhearing
thenews,POCpresidentJoseCojuangco,Jr.calledforimprovementsinthenationalteam,mostnotably,inthe
sendingofanewteammadeupofplayersfromthePhilippineBasketballAssociation(PBA).

ThePBA,togetherwiththePhilippineBasketballLeague(PBL),theUAAPandtheNCAA,reportedlycametoan

basketballbody.ByMarch2006,thefourstakeholders(PBA,PBL,UAAPandNCAA)signedanagreementto
proposeanewbasketballbody(PilipinasBasketball).Linarefusedtosignthememorandum,citing"unbalanced
factors"thatwasputinthedraft.AfterthefourstakeholdersmetwithBaumanninSouthKorea,thesuspension
wasnotliftedandthedraftforanewbodywasnotacceptedsinceLinawasnotinagreement.Afterseveral
meetingsbetweenBaumannandtheofficialsoftheBAPandPilipinasBasketballinGenevaandBangkok,aUnity
Congresswasheld.TheBAPandPilipinasBasketballagreedtomerge,creatingtheSamahangBasketbolng

In2010,theSmartGilasPilipinasandSinagPilipinasprogramsreplacedtheTeamPilipinasprogram.Sinag
PilipinasrepresentsthecountryinregionalcompetitionssuchastheSoutheastAsianGamesandSEABA
Championship.SmartCommunicationsisthemainsponsorofbothprograms.GilasisaFilipinowordthatloosely

Thenationalcolorsofblue,whiteandredhavebeenusedinnationalteamuniformsthroughout

lightcoloreduniform.Redwasoccasionallyusedasatertiarycolor.Inthe2002AsianGames,the
