Laurea Magistrale (M. Sc) Management Engineering

Polytechnic De Milano

Winter Semester 2015 / 2016

Applicant: Naveed Iqbal

Most engineers are not good managers is the buzzword around globe, and thats what I have
heard and read too, most of the times from leadership of various industries, including that of
Fortune 500. Working at a management position at largest private electric power company of
Pakistan, poor management skills reflect to be the weakest link of the chain for engineers.
There are very obvious reasons for why is this so. In this letter, I will try to prove that why I am
one of most suitable candidate for Management Engineering Program at Polytechnic De
Milano.

Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater
than any obstacle said Christian D. Larson, is what I strongly believe in as a necessary
formulation for an ambitious life. Belonging to remote northern rural area of Sindh Pakistan,
where lifestyle is modest and very few are fortunate enough to get higher education, I had a
belief at early stages of life that education is the only force that is going to make a change in
life. That was the starting point of my ambition. Denying the local traditions, where youngsters
do not achieve higher education and are voluntarily or forcedly married at early ages, I set for
myself a different path. I had only one thing in mind, a world class higher education that will
groom myself, raise the bar for my native locals to achieve higher education, and ultimately to
strive to set new standards for engineer-manager position at workplace and industry in
general.

Belonging to a family with a modest background; I realized that education and hard work is the
only thing in life that will keep me moving on. Working hard through school and college
education, I had been able to get into top notch engineering university of Pakistan. I had
accomplished my Bachelors in Mechanical with my Majors in Thermal Science, Power and
Design. With an excellent track record at academics and extracurricular activities, I was able to
successfully land a job in the largest private electric utility company of Pakistan. Now am
serving as an Assistant Manager in Power Plant Operations. My boss and seniors are very
pleased with my technical knowledge, but there is one thing that I genuinely feel lacking in me
as manager i.e. strong management skills and this is not the issue with me only, out there the
industry, financial management, technical variables, competitiveness and planning, everything
is getting complex. Especially in Pakistan, management studies are a mere part of engineering
degree with least focus.
So engineers need a profusion of technical and management skills, to excel them at a globally
competitive marketplace. Since my graduation I have been looking for a program that deems fit
to my requirements. Since MBA is a totally business degree, it will put me offset to my technical
trade, that is why I have totally ruled out MBA. Fortunately I came to know of this program
through a friend of mine who has already been admitted to Polytechnic for this winter 2015 /
2016 semester.

I plan to undergo a competitive and goal oriented research work at Polytechnic De Milano. With
its world class management degree program and leading research center, it will prove to be a
launching pad for my career plans. I wish to associate my research work with market leading
institute and professors. I hope that Polytechnic is the nursery where future leaders and
researchers are groomed to make a pivotal impact on global issues. I hope Polytechnic will be
my first step of a thousand mile journey towards fast paced innovation and knowledge based
economy which guarantees to become top leader in market.

I have the perseverance and persistence needed for advancement in science and technology. I
am an exceptional team leader, a team player as well and a social butterfly, which I have
repeatedly exhibited during my bachelors degree tenure. Being fortunate enough to study at a
university where international students are warmly welcomed, I have developed cells for
mixing with people of different cultures, ethnicities, race and echelons. I always had very good
terms with my professors and colleagues, as I believe that innovation and inspiration is only
possible through respect and team work.

However this is merely the beginning, for I aspire to achieve much more. Despite having a good
paid job, I have thirst of knowledge that will make an impact on how our engineer-manager
personnel operate, to help others and most importantly to prove that what matters is not where
you come from but where you are heading. I had worked hard to make most of this chosen
career path.

With all that said, I hope I make a strong case for my consideration for Management
Engineering Program at Polytechnic. The rest I leave to you. I hope you would make the best
decision for me.

Thank you,

Polytechnic De Milano

Winter Semester 2015 / 2016

Education by its inherent virtue, dictates that it must be used for a broader responsibility than
taking the reward for self. One of the tests of correctness of education is that it must be used
for the benefits of others. Any education that puts a man confined to his self-objectives is in
fact no education. This is the very thing that I have been trained since my childhood. I am of
view to achieve quality higher education and make positive impact on the surroundings.

Belonging to remote northern rural area of Sindh, Pakistan, where higher education is too
meager to regret upon, higher education is what I am avid of. Brought up through hardships
and tough times, my parents had long ago planted a seed in my mind that a quality education
will be the single most pivotal thing to change my life. That was the seed that bloomed to make
me a strong defender of achieving higher education, in an area where people live modest lives
with very rudimentary occupations. For this reason, the quest for quality education for me had
begun a long ago.

Working hard through high school, I was competitive enough to get myself enrolled in countrys
finest engineering university. University proved to be challenging. It was university life that gave
me a good level maturity, exposure to a metropolitan city of Karachi with people from different
races, cultures and ethnicities, and how to stand strong enough in a competitive professional
environment. I was an active figure in extracurricular activities along with my academics. I led
the final year group project and contested for ASME (American Society of Mechanical
Engineers) NED Chapter elections too. Good grades in my core and business related courses,
backed by my strong personality and interpersonal skills enabled me to land a good job at the
largest private electric utility company of Pakistan. Now, it has been two years working at a
combined cycle power plant in operations team. This was where I applied concepts learned
back at university.

I had a very carefully cultivated career plan. I chose mechanical engineering with majors in
Energy and Thermal Sciences, backed by my final year project on designing of boiler for power
industry. This learning influenced my job in technical terms. Now I wish to expand my
knowledge base by having masters at a world leading university. With plans to specialize in
mechanical design, turbo machinery and engines I hope to invigorate Pakistani industry in these
areas.
I plan to undergo a competitive and goal oriented research work at Polytechnic De Milano. With
its world class mechanical masters degree program and leading research center, it will prove to
be a launching pad for my career plans. I wish to associate my research work with market
leading organizations. I hope that this Polytechnic Di Milano is the nursery where future leaders
